oh I found it on her blog. Yay Google! I just did this exercise and am very surprised. :-)

I realize now why jeans labeled mid-rise leave me feeling extremely exposed!

I am so glad you posted this Tanya. I feel like when I wear a tucked in shirt it looks very similar to your's and I always wondered why to my eye this looks "off" to me. I always seem to prefer the untucked version of an outfit.

Is a long/short rise measured from the belly button or from the natural waist?

I'm short with long torso/short legs, and I guess I have a short rise based on my belly button. But my waist is significantly higher than my belly button--not that I would ever wear pants at my waist, because it's pretty close to the bottom of my ribcage and the halfway point of my torso.

Mo - I am marveling at how an 8" rise can be a hand's width below your belly button! I'm wearing a 7" rise right now and it sits two inches below my belly button. But I can fit one and a half hands between my belly button and my natural waist.

Suz, you are quite an analyst! :-)
I am not as good at analysis as you so I simply say: finding perfect fit in trousers is an art!

Just to add to the confusion (well, actually, i hope i don't!) - as Angie said in the blog this morning, I have a long rise and a short waist.

I'd never realized that I had a short waist until I did Imogen's body proportions exercise. It shocked the heck out of me.

As a matter of fact, because of my short waist, technically I am not "long in the torso" as I had always supposed -- OR "short in the leg." Technically, I am even.

BUT - because I"m quite short in one area, I'm proportionately long in the other, and hence I need a higher rise in trousers.

This is why Malina and I, at 5'4", often do better in petites jackets, dresses, and shirts.

But in my case, anyway, not always. For instance, I fit BR petites better than their regulars (for the top body). And I CAN wear Ann Taylor petites, too, especially jackets, especially if I size up (for my shoulders). But actually, taking the lowest possible size in regulars was a bit better at Ann Taylor than sizing up in petite.

Sveta, I haven't worn the Editors so I don't know, but I am going to hazard a guess. They may be cut with some looseness over the thigh area. This is a tradtional problem area for me, in addition to the rise. My thighs are somewhat narrower these days but still quite muscular, and besides the rise issue, that can be a cause of whiskering and discomfort in trousers. Hence the appeal of a slightly slouchy or baggy fit. It glides over those areas and doesn't make them seem to bump out.

What I've learned is that at my medium short height with a longish rise, I can't ever wear petite pants unless I size way up. And sometimes, that can be a good idea -- especially if I am going for a slightly slouchy look.

Regular pants are a much better fit in the rise -- but will always need some hemming.

Thank you very much again Angie! This helps a lot. I guess it also explains me preferring Editor pants from Express ( looser through the thigh) while you wear Columnists (lower rise and less wide in the thigh). Now if they only made those Editors with less stretch!

Mo, you DO have a long rise. There's the mystery solved right there :).

Tanya, a higher rise is a good option on trousers, although my feeling is that fabric and ease on the thigh plays a large role too.

good point - perhaps. I always marvel at how anyone can wear 7 or 6" rise. It would be positively obscene on me lol.

This confuses me. I am relatively short, with a high/short waist and 8" is as low as I can go. It is a full hand's width below my belly button.

Thank you so much Angie! That perfectly explains my original reaction when you asked earlier today if the majority of my torso length was below or above my belly button. I thought that both areas seemed long to me :D
Anyway, it looks that I need to look for trousers with longer/higher rise, correct? My favorites so far ( Max C by Theory) have the same 8" rise as these jeans, but perhaps I need even higher one?

On Angie's very helpful blog post today, I mentioned that I wasn't sure if having a long torso/ short legs body type like I do means that I have a short rise or a long rise. Angie's reply was that depends upon whether most of that torso length is above or below the belly button. Well, honestly, I have no clue, and here are the photos to help me determine that ( after looking at them I think I might have an idea but I could be wrong).
I have put a safety pin on the t-shirt to mark where my belly button is. The jeans have medium, 8" rise (Amber by COH). Thank you very much for your help with this!
