Well, I think you're right that the draping should work beautifully on you! I would definitely give the petites in EF a try. The regular sizes are cut for taller people. You might check out Transcona Shannon's newer outfits. She's been buying up EF in a storm (ebay) and at 5'1" with an rectangle/ apple shape the petites really work well for her.

Thanks, Angie! I do like the UWP look a lot. I think I might prefer a bit more ease/laid-back-ness/softness/sensuality than what I picture in my mind as UWP, but maybe that's just a matter of interpretation. So I could do my own softer take on UWP, perhaps.

Hi Suz: Well, I'm small (or short, rather - I'm slightly under 5'3") but not slight. I'm an inverted triangle/apple, wearing about a size 12 on top and size 10 on bottom. Usually I'm fine wearing non-petites on top, and on bottom I wear both petite and non-petite, depending on the item. Draping usually works for me, I think because of my broad shoulder line and chest, as well as my more rounded features. (Where I actually really adore drapy volume is on my lower half, where such volume comes in handy to balance my upper half.)

The EF store I was in didn't have many petites, unfortunately. Next time I'm by a store that stocks more petites, I'll drop in. And thanks for the tip on adding structure to the EF looks. You've been so helpful!

I can't really add much what others have suggested either, but I just wanted to say I really like your pins! And, in addition to Deborah, the looks kind of remind me of Una/Alaskagirl here too.

danskogirl, are you by any chance small and slight? Eileen Fisher can be a tough fit for those who are. I'm essentially sized out of a lot of her stuff (there are exceptions -- and trying petites might work for me -- it works for Joy).

In terms of styling, I think it's important to retain some structure with pieces like that. Otherwise the "older" feeling seeps in.

It can be frustrating when you like a style or a maker and then discover that it doesn't quite work for your body type. I have had this experience also. I'm a big fan of many of the draped looks you show on your board. But I can't successfully wear most of them -- draping hates my straight lines. I can do asymmetry and do it very well -- as well as fluid. But add drape (up top, at least) and I begin to look like a scarecrow in somebody's old rags. And I'm not even particularly thin! It is more to do with my natural angles and even with my face, I suspect. The softness of the draping fights with me. And I end up looking like "arty older lady" rather than the cool sophisticated chic woman I'd like to be. What I call the museum docent look, since that is how they seem to dress in my neck of the woods. Not that there is anything wrong with museum docents. It's just not the look I want to emulate.

Thank you all so much for playing! This helps me a lot.

Suz: I love "Arty Urban Minimalist." I will sit with that for a bit and see if it feels right over the long run.

I had thought of Eileen Fisher before but had never actually gone in to a store for two paradoxical reasons. 1) I thought the cuts might be too boxy for me, and 2) paradoxically, I was afraid I might fall in love with the clothes since they're a bit higher than my budget typically allows.

But having read your suggestion that I might like it, I wandered into an Eileen Fisher store today. I did find an asymmetric tunic and pull-on pants, which I bought -- I like them but am undecided so far whether I love them. I actually didn't end up loving most of the stuff, surprisingly. For whatever reason, I think the cuts don't quite work with my body and they made me feel older. But I do so admire the look on others who can carry it off.

Also: Alas, there is still so much distance between my current style reality and the aspirational style fantasies. Baby steps, I guess.

I've been in the process of trying to hone my style and have had fun reading through all the old posts on style descriptors, how people honed their style, finding words that help focus their style, etc.

I've come up with a style statement that I think works for me but I'd also like to ask your help in providing some descriptors/adjectives/analyses. (I've found that often, others can provide insights that I may have completely overlooked.)

Here's my Pinterest board with a few items/outfits that are similar to things that I already wear and many others that are aspirational/inspirational: http://www.pinterest.com/dansk.....nal-style/
(You will see that YLF-er -- is that a word? -- Deborah is one of my inspirations.)

Any thoughts on descriptors? Adjectives that pop into your mind? Commonalities among the items? Vibe of items (RATE vs polished, etc?)

Thank you so much!
