The ballet flats arrived and are quite cute with mild support. I think this will do for my purposes as a night time shoe and will be easy to pack. Plus, they will go with anything.

My blue Sarto loafers from NAS never worked out so I’m pleased to have another Fall option with some support.

Angie, no worries - there's no chance I'd leave them behind. My husband would insist if I even considered not taking them.

La Pedestrienne - this is my first time and I'm soooo excited. The Alhambra is on my bucket list, and I've already booked a time. I may bring Birks or other some sandals for the pool, since it's supposed to be warm enough in Granada for swimming, if last year is any indication. They're light enough, at least. I'd wear them at night as long as the temps are over 68-70 or so. I run cold otherwise, but don't mind my toes being a bit cold, go figure.

Super jealous! I adore Spain -- great food and music, affordable wine, some of the best people watching anywhere.

Like Angie, I probably wouldn't bring sandals in October. Spain is lovely and temperate, but I run cold. If you do want sandals, I'd bring the Birks because they are the most comfortable and may be the best for your back -- and trendy to boot. I'd bring the hiking shoes, the sneakers, and either the silver loafers or the Rockports for a dressier option, whichever is more walkable.

Interesting take, Angie! I do need the hiking boots though. They're the only things I know I can walk in comfortably in all day for up to 40,000 steps when I'm traveling, even before all this back stuff happened to me. (We walk all over every city and hardly even use public transport in some cases.) My trip to Chile last year was my most pain free travel experience, thanks to those boots. Fortunately, they look like hi-tops in person and are reasonably cute with jeans, so I ended up not minding wearing them during the day in cities.

So I'd have to sub out the booties or loafers. I have good hopes for the Vionic ballet flats that are coming, as night time shoes with some support and a level of dressiness. (I can also pass on some of my less supportive flats at home once they come.) Our hotels in Andalusia, which I have booked since I posted, have pools, so I may actually want flip flops!

New data point - I wore less supportive shoes out on the streets yesterday with few problems. I may not need to completely overhaul my Fall shoe capsule after all, but I'll still be glad to have more supportive flats.

Sarah, that’s more or less what I’m doing! It’s just a little muddled because it’s not clear to me yet what my needs at home will be in a month. I don’t know what wrceentage of my current collection will work, not work, or work if I add inserts. So I’d like something that is comfortable attractive enough that I’ll still want to wear them even if I feel better. It’s better for me to move towards all my shoes having arch support anyway.

That said, I assume that I will neeed extra arch suppprt when traveling, even if I feel better by then on a normal day to day basis. So anything that feels comfortable right now with my healing back (temperature aside) may work.

I tried some Vionic ballet flats at lunch. I liked the feel but would want to order a different color than DSW had on hand.I ended up ordering this style - maybe I won't need sandals at all if this works, since they're perforated but I can also wear them with tights/dress socks.

Christina, you wrote:

So instead of looking specifically for a shoe for your trip, another strategy might be to look for moderately dressy fall shoes that are good for moderate walking at home. Especially since you need to expand that capsule anyway, and the use case that you are trying to solve for travel -- evening out at moderately nice restaurant in Madrid -- will be such a small part of your trip. I bet if you build out that capsule a little bit with shoes you can wear to work this fall, one of them will work just fine for your trip.

Adriana, my PT's don't seem knowledgeable about shoes. I will check out Arche. I may also stop by the Walking Company and Harry's Shoes (the latter is a local chain and very similar to Walking Co). I think if I tell them I need something like what people with plantar fasciitis need, they can help. I tend to walk a lot at home and will be able to break the shoes in, though I haven't been walking as much as I used to due to the injury and am slowly building back up.

Viva, I can't really do a heel that high anymore - not even before the back problems. I will have to walk at least some in the shoes, though hopefully shorter distances than during the day - my husband has a phobia of cabs and I don't make us take one unless my need is dire. I hope I can find restaurants near our hotel or else convenient to transit, but I plan to stay centrally in each city so that will help.

I am going to look at or order some Vionic flats, since Vionic flatforms and flip flops have been working best for me. I'll need something to walk in at home anyway, once it gets too cold for sandals, so I need more options regardless. I just wore my Naturalizer loafers today with the new Orthaheel/Voinic inserts, and Im doing pretty well. I'll report back on what else I find.

Could something like the Everlane day heel fill the fill? I have not tried them but the reviews are strong, and women talk about walking around them in all day in the city. I know you don't need to walk in the shoes you're looking for - but that speaks to their comfort. It has a cushioned insole, not sure about arch support. And they come in a wide range of sizes.

What a problem. What is your physical therapist recommending? I think you must try a lot at home walking in the streets. In the Spanish cities half the fun is walking and looking with the rest of the pedestrians.
Have you ever tried Arche shoes? Lots of models for different feet. Colors, and wearable with or without socks.

I have the same shoes Suntiger, I think, in silver. They are really only for very fancy occasions, for me. Taxi to event to taxi. I won’t be dressing up that much in Spain. (My feet slide around too much if I walk at more than a gentle glide in them. I need to find a way to fix that.)

Firecracker, I saw she wore those shoes. She doesn’t need as much support as me, I think. But I just got some Orthoheel inserts that will work in those shoes, and add support.

Gretchen - I will look at Cole Haan, if the ballet flats are supportive! A supportive ballet flat would solve my problems; the ones I own are not.

Shiny, can actually do no socks at 50 degrees. It’s not ideal, but I won’t freeze or be unduly uncomfortable. Also, I should mention my husband hates taxis (pathological fear of putting his life in a stranger’s hands) so I avoid them unless I am in dire need. The shoe I wear out at night will likely have to be the shoe I walk in unless there is a public transport option that eliminates most waking or we dine near the hotel. That said, the Rockport heels don’t feel like heels on me, but I have not tried them when my feet are tired. I don’t think I’d be carrying enough of a bag at night for switching shoes.

Thanks for helping me think out all the logistics! I’m asking now in case I do want to buy, so I have time to break something in. That said, I think a low wedge is better for my back problems than a flat. It’s unclear to me what I own that I can even comfortably walk in at home this fall; it depends on my back healing, which has been happening but very slow.

I think the Naturalizer loafers would be my first choice, or the Rockport Mary Janes. Either one could work with skirts/dresses or nice pants for restaurants or evening activities. In Angie's travel post here I believe she is wearing those loafers with a dress for a fab look.

How lucky you are - visiting some amazing cities!

I agree that comfort comes first, especially when dealing with back issues. I'd also note that in Madrid, Sevilla and Granada you are likely to be walking before or after dinner, so I would rule out heels. For me, that usually means adding a pair of ballet flats. Have you looked at Cole Haan flats? Several friends who work tech show swear by them for all day standing, and they would look cute with pants or dresses.

Follow up comment:

I have some business trips each year where on the third day we have a fancy party and I'm supposed to be dressed up. And that means heels. And I pack them, but by then, I just can't tolerate them at all.

My secret solution? I found myself a pair of inexpensive sparkly gold ballet flats!!!! I wear them as is, or to the venue, switch into the heels, sit all night, switch back to the sparkly flats to walk home....

The flats are great, they take up very little room.

I'd definitely plan for long pants for 50 degree weather. And socks too. In that weather I'm firmly in my booties with socks. Heck I'm in booties with light socks by 60 degrees. Or, my Allbirds, since they are wool, but still with long pants, at most a peep of ankle showing.

I'd also try to aim for outfits that can go with flats, not heels. You are absolutely right to figure that you may be walking all day and your feet need a break, and won't tolerate heels.

So many times I bring heels on vacation thinking I'll wear them out at night and will be mostly sitting -- and (except for wedges, since they do have lots of arch support) I am miserable or I just don't wear them and make do with whatever I've got. Or, ask hubby to taxi us back and forth door to door, so I can honestly just sit in my sitting heels!

Thanks everyone! In the past, I wouldn’t have taken four pairs but my back needs come first. The Naots are very light, fortunately.

Shiny, I edited out the fact that I’d expect to wear tights in Madrid. Or I may just bring dressy slacks and blouse for that portion. That argues in favor of the loafers.

I would take four pairs of shoes.

The hiking boots, the metallic sneakers, one pair of covered dressy shoes eg loafers, and one pair of sandals (birks or naturalisers). I think all weather and dressiness levels will be covered and you have options.

I like to have four footwear options and compromise on other pieces. But this is just me as I like variety here and am happy to do washing whilst away (maybe not happy but prepared to visit a laundromat for a couple of hours).

What Joy said. You must protect your back so fashion may have to take a back seat. If you can add an insert to your Naturalizer loafer, that should be dressy enough for most restaurants. Is it likely to rain in Madrid? If so, I'd definitely think closed toe shoes.

smittie - I am not sure. My only real requirements, aside from being flat/low and having some support, are that they would work in the range of temps I may be seeing and that should work with a dress or skirt.

I guess something I’d need to have socks for probably is not as versatile as shoes that can be worn without. I only like to wear socks in the winter with boots and some sneakers anyway - only when I have to wear them, basically. I also need them with the hiking boots. I won’t want to wear socks at night, after having the boots with socks on all day, unless I’d freeze without them.

They don’t need to be shoes that I can walk in all day. It’s a bonus, but the other two pairs I’m bringing will cover me there. They do need some support, though, since my feet will be tired and I expect to walk some at night. I do like to change shoes at night just to give everything a break.

My foot needs have been changing, so this is why it’s all a little vague. I’m trying to think through it all as I post.

I am not sure Naot has anything between a boot and a sandal that I like very much, in terms of looks. Or else I’d go with that brand. The Naot sandals are the best shoes I own, but partly because they are a slight wedge, I think. They are wonderfully comfy and supportive enough, plus they look nice. Maybe I should just bring them for the south and wear the Eccos at night in Madrid. I just won’t choose any restaurants where fashion sneakers won’t fly.

It’s hard to know what you need!
Are you asking for a dressy, non-walking closed-toe flat?

I like the naturalizers and the rockports.

Are you thinking you need something you can wear with socks? Like a dressy Oxford?

Joy, you are correct. I’ve included the ballet flats here but will probably leave them out because they won’t be good enough without help. All the other options are probably comfy enough. My most comfy shoes now, aside from the closed toe ones I am definitely packing, are sandals, which is why I’m struggling. (I also have comfy winter booties but they also won’t be right seasonally.)

I don’t know that I have good shoulder season options that aren’t boots or sneakers. That may be a problem in my real life going forward too. Even though my back is healing there are some underlying things about my anatomy that mean I’ll have to be careful of it happening again. Traditionally I’ve been able to do without as much arch support on normal working days. Not sure if that will be true in the future. This is why I’m working on finding inserts for some that are too new to get rid of yet. The Naturalizer and Botkier flats are less than a year old.

Hi everyone! I am planning to go to Spain in November. Specifically, Madrid, Seville, and Granada (side trip to Cordoba). Based on last years, temps can range from 50 F to 80 F in the three locations. I need help choosing what shoes to pack.

I have been dealing with a slowly healing back injury. I hope to be mostly better by then, but lately I've needed a lot of arch support when walking outside - I've been using Vionics and the bronze Noats shown below which, have been the most comfortable outside. Even if my back is better, I have flat feet and need arch support anyway.

My question pertains to a 3rd or 4th pair of shoes to pack. I will definitely bring the hiking boots and the Ecco metallic sneaker shown below. The former look almost like hi-tops and will likely be worn most days. The latter can probably be worn out in the evening with dresses or skirts, or nice jeans, but I do think I'll need a dressier option in case we go anywhere fancy. I can also use these during the day. They are versatile and comfy.

That said, I'm a bit stumped on a dressier option because all three cities have different climates. The bronze Noats would be perfect, if not for the fact that Madrid, where I'm likely to dress up a bit, should be the coldest destination of the three in the evenings (Could be as cold as low 50's).

I’m trying to figure out if any of the shoes I have for the bill well enough. If not, then I either need to buy something, or suck it up and bring an extra pair. The dilemma is that my most comfy existing shoes are either for winter, are casual (my other shoe choices cover my casual needs), or are sandals. Sandals won’t really do in Madrid at night, if I want to go out anywhere dressy. Of what I have here below, I think the two Rockports or the Naturalizers meet my needs best. Here are my needs (tried to clarify what I posted before):

- arch support - they don’t need to be all day shoes, but my feet will be tired
- flat or else a low heel or wedge
- moderately dressy
- can work in temps that may range from 50-80 F. This probably means close toed?
-Can work with a dress or skirt

Options for 3rd/4th shoe that I already own include:

Naturalizer white huaraches (same problem as the Naots but easier to pack in case I decide I need a 4th shoe; not tons of arch support but may be okay for evenings)

Lucky Brand greybooties (perforated - so may be more breathable than other booties in case it's hot; not so dressy though and so would fill kind of the same role as the Eccos in a somewhat dressy outfit)

Naturalizer loafers (can add more arch support with an insert)

Rockport Mary Janes (nice for mild weather, anyway, and can be worn with or without tights, as needed)

Botkier flats (not really enough support unless I add an insert, not sure I love how they look with dress/skirt; I also have Edelman Felicia flats in a rounder shape and a metallic deep blue that may be better but also need arch support, no find)

Birks in silver, which I use in the summer to dress things up a smidge but remain comfy (still won't do for Madrid most likely for the same reasons as the other open toe shoes)
ETA - I forgot one of my most eligible shoes, the bronze Rockports. They are open toed but probably okay down to about 60 F since they cover a lot of the foot. They are comfortable enough for the purpose.

I am also willing to take suggestions for cute, supportive shoes that are somewhat dressy, can be paired with a dress/skirt, and would work in both mild and warm weather. Since my shoe needs are in the process of changing, I'm going to have to keep adding supportive pairs anyway, or else put inserts in most pairs I currently own. (Such as the flats below.)
