Sal, I like the 20s/30s idea! Definitely some movement in the skirt is in order...

Bella can't go wrong with a LBD! I'm torn between wanting to play it safe and wanting to wear something with a lot of personality for this event. (I work in a creative field, but one that is not exactly known for being fashion-minded.)

Suz ooh I like the idea of asymmetry. And sparkly cable knits!

Angie I think you nailed it (of course)! Love the idea of polar bears or lizards. I think this is an event where I can let out my inner Ms. Frizzle a little bit.

Runcarla I think you need that bubble skirt from your local thrift!

cat2 I definitely see the practical appeal of separates here.

Jaime I like the way you think. That sounds like fun!

Lisa yes, it seems like thinking seasonal (despite the mild climate) is probably the way to go here, although this is not a specifically seasonal event. (It's not, like, an office holiday party iykwim.)

JenniNZ, I've done the same, looked at metallic pleated skirts longingly and then passed because I didn't really have a use for them. Well, now maybe I do!

Brooklyn velvet is definitely appealing here!

Thanks all, you have given me a lot of good ideas to start playing around with! I will keep you posted.

I like Angie’s velvet idea. A velvet blazer over a silky dress or a velvet pants suit would be awesome.

I like Suz’s and Lisa’s ideas. I keep putting metallic pleated skirts in my Finds then don’t buy any because I don’t wear the formal skirts I have enough. I think they could suit you really well. Thrifting could turn up something great?
And metallic shoes or even your gold ballet flats?
By the way your YLF profile is totally blank. A bit of info for newer forum members who would like to help would be nice?

For an early December event I’m thinking something seasonal like metallics or velvet. I’m not a big dress gal for myself so I lean to trouser outfits. A velvet suit with heels (if your feet can handle it) is a lovely look. Another look I like in December is lace if you’re desiring a dress for the event. Metallics (silver, gold, blush) and rich tones (wine, teal, forest green) are all lovely non neutral options. Of course you can’t go wrong with black (lace or velvet) if you don’t want to wear color.

I’m a fan of evening separates for work events. You can style a skirt more conservatively for the office event and then swap it out the styling for something more fun for future personal events.

Do check the thrift shops! One of my regulars has a vintage midi bubble skirt (currently trending) that is new-with-tags from a formal wear store that closed/liquidated. It’s old-old - from one of those stores that never returned their stock and kept it in some vault in the basement. (There’s other stuff, but this one is haunting me.).

You never know what you’ll find - but I’d suggest looking for a midi or ballerina length skirt with volume, and topping it with a close fit refined sweater and low heeled slingbacks. (See pic below for silhouette.) Maybe a cardi with sparkly buttons. You can mix and match the items over the holiday season afterwards.

How fun, SarahD8!!!

If you are close to the water in So Cal in Dec, it ALWAYS cools down at night. You've been warned :)

I see you in velvet, or a look that is texture-rich with quirky jewellery. Crushed velvet dress or skirt, metallic shoes, embroidered bag, hair down, and polar bears or reptiles as pendants on your necklaces :)

Oooh, fun! This sounds exciting on multiple levels!

Sal's idea of the slip dress resonates with me...maybe one of those AllSaints sets or dresses like the ones Sharan showed not long ago? A few Finds below, also an asymmetric skirt could be really nice...

A set is especially good for mix and match.

I think I would go with an LBD for a work event to be on the safe side. But personally, I like wearing black and I particularly like wearing LBDs, so this would be a no brainer for me. Besides, LBDs are super easy to thrift and you can accessorize in your own way for a more personal touch.

I would personally choose something like this because it's architectural:
https://www.nordstrom.com/s/ru.....ersonalize

But you can go with whatever LBD suits your fancy.

https://www.nordstrom.com/s/sa.....-personali

How fun!!

I could see you in a slip style dress with a crochet/beaded/ embroidered short jacket over the top. Modern 1920s style.

For some reason I can see 1920s or 30s influences really working for you.

Or a dress similar to the vampires wife style - long sleeve, fitted but with movement at the bottom.

Who wants to play paper doll?

I have a professional event/evening ceremony to attend in early December in southern California (so, mild/Mediterranean climate).

The dress code is cocktail attire/semi-formal.

This is quite out of the ordinary for my lifestyle -- I will play around in my closet but most likely will need to acquire something new.

What should I wear?

I am very much in brainstorming mode so I'm interested in both fanciful descriptions of what I might wear, based on your knowledge of my natural-dyed-literati style, as well as links to specific items if you care to share.

I will probably look secondhand first, but I'm also open to buying retail and putting in a reasonable investment, especially for something with a high longevity factor and/or remixable.

Thanks for any inspiration!
