(1) Cinnamon, I think the fit is pretty darn perfect on you! Don't be so hard on yourself!

(2) I suspect what *may* be happening is that the pattern is obscuring the wrap lines of the dress. What makes a wrap dress look 'hourglassy' is that the neckline and A-line skirt make diagonals that help the eye slide inwards on the way down and then outwards further down.

This is not happening as much because of the pattern (which I actually also *do* like on you, despite all this); BUT you could maybe remedy that by emphasizing your small waist with a darker and possibly wider belt. That should provide enough contrast with the width of the lighter fabric on your shoulder and at the hem to trick the eye again! It's worth a try, isn't it?

Another way to emphasize the V-shaped diagonals on top is with a necklace added in a standout colour. Again, worth a try?

Because that dress is fabulous, I'd say (right along with MaryK).

(c) Also remember that this is a still photo. In motion, a wrap dress' skirt flares out more (which counters your IT silhouette better). And consider the side view, too, since we do see people in the round. You'll probably see more hourglass-ness right away!

I don't see anything off about the wrap dress at all, cinnamonfern! It hugs your frame well, and is a great length. The white/orange print would be a matter of taste. It's not a bold pattern, so perhaps the black boots are too heavy for it and are throwing off the look. Experiment with different shoes or different coloured boots (perhaps brown or cognac or even off-white!) and some jewelry. I think this is a lovely wrap dress...honestly.

I honestly, truly, do not think this is that bad on you. I think you may be have an image in your mind of what a wrap dress is supposed to look like, though, and that is not matching the image you are seeing in the mirror. I think it is an issue of body shape.

While I do think you should keep and wear this dress because I think it looks pretty and feminine and chic on you, if you are looking to create an hourglass silhouette, maybe try a dress (or blouse/skirt combo) with an a-line skirt that come to your natural waist (not too a-line and not flared), a fitted bodice and then slap a wide, dark-colored belt at the waistline. Not sure that will work, but I'm guessing it might help.

hmmm... I don't know that I have anything helpful to add but just wanted to say I have a wrap dress I struggle with and the IT hourglass discussion was very interestingl to me! Thanks!

I can see the IT, too. But wraps are best for true hourglasses and (sometimes, depending on fabric) for pears. They aren't impossible for other types. Just not as spectacular.

I agree with Isabel that the sleeves might be an issue here as well.

According to Angie I am 50-50 IT and hourglass. I do look really rectangular in this dress, though, don't I?

I will stop by Monday with a wide belt and some heels if I can leave work in time. Thanks, guys!

I agree with Suz that it is really hard to access something when you are not wearing the appropriate shoes. ....with that said, the boots are throwing me off. I also don't really like the length of the sleeves on you. They should either be longer or shorter. I think it is awkward at the elbow. But that is soooo easily fixed. And I agree with having a wider belt.

I think that a wrap dress can be a little tighter at the waist or looser. That is the beauty of it, for my anyway. Some days my belly is larger than other days LOL !

I think it should be snug at the waist, at least snug enough to SHOW the waist, if you know what I'm saying. How about trying with another belt to see? And trying with the footwear you'd choose.

I agree with Suz that hourglasses can wear wrap dresses a bit more consistently than rectangles. So maybe that's what's throwing you...

My advice is pretty much the same as Meredith's. The thing that looks the most "off" to my eye is the waist. The included belt isn't substantial enough. You need something wider. Do you have any wider belts? And as Suz said, this color may not be your best, but I'm not as sure about that.

Suz, it's true the cowboy boots probably don't help! I've thought I've looked good in wrap dresses before, but I have been getting pickier since YLF.

Meredith, I think you're right about the waist. I do have one in other dresses!

Should a wrap dress be tight at the waist, or should it have some ease?

Interesting. I think maybe you are being really hard on yourself. It's tough to judge a dress when you're not groomed as you would be, wearing it, and when the footwear is different.

Having said that...I'm also not sure the colour's best for you, although that could also be a function of dressing room fluorescent lights!

In terms of the fit, the shoulders look good. And the length looks fine. So it may be more that wrap dresses don't work as well for your body type as other cuts?

I am a slim hourglass/ rectangle with a small bust. But that's after weight loss. I used to be a fuller hourglass (still with a smallish bust, but much bigger than it is now). Back in the day, wrap dresses were my best friend; they looked SO great on me! But now?

Not so much.

They aren't truly awful; they just aren't so fab. I don't really fill out the top portion the way it is meant to be filled out. And I don't really have enough curves to fill out the dress, period. Now I find a sheath style (something I could never wear before) or a style with some ruching is much more flattering.

Hi CinnamonFern,
I can see that something is off. A wrap dress should accentuate a waistline and for some reason this one doesn't. Also the hem dips in an odd spot. Can you swap the tie belt for something else? I wish I could offer more advice but I am so new to this.

I was super excited to find this DVF dress in my local consignment store; I've been looking for a wrap dress. But then I tried it on. I know it doesn't work - but why not? Is it the color? The fit? Is this just a bad shape for me?

Excuse the bad photos and just rolled out of bed hair!
