Glad it's better after drying. Maybe now you can try a leather conditioner to make it soft again, this is a good product: https://www.hangerproject.com/.....ateur.html

Was baking soda and water, yes. The spot has dried to its old colour, but the surface there has lost its smoothness and feels rough and looks dull... So yeah, abrasion.

I will admit I just panicked big time on seeing the big dark spot bloom from what was a white bit of gloop! Much better now

Hi Manidipa! Was it baking soda and water? People actually use baking soda to clean leather, so I don’t think using polish is going to be sealing in a stain that could otherwise be removed. I’m guessing the ‘wear’ is abrasion, not coloration that could be removed...

Hi, Joy and Beth! ::waving enthusiastically:: So good to "see" you both!

Well, it looks vastly better now -- what seems to have happened is the soda has 'worn' the leather a bit. I don't know if I should try to use neutral polish to 'seal' it/waterproof it again, OR whether that will seal in the alkali too and let it cause further damage, and I should try to neutralise with vinegar or something to minimize damage? Joy, our cobblers here are mostly traders that would sit on the street and do simple, minor repairs--not terribly expertly :-/ Don't think they would know what to do with this except dye it. Specialist shoe care stores... a bit like chasing down a tiger. Elusive, rare thing.

Is the salt used on snow alkaline or acidic, Beth Ann? Would you know? I will try to google salt stains if it is an alkali used, I guess...

Oh no! Mandipa it is so good to see you post -- even if I only see your foot!

Baking soda would be a salt solution, so I think it would act much like winter slushy snow. I don't have good advice, I'm afraid, but it might look better after it dries!

Help! I dropped a drip of baking soda paste on my new boots. Hurrying to mop up worsened matters. Any way to rescue them from staining? Or do I give up and just stain them all over? They were such a lovely taupe (they were already waterproofed but does not seem to have helped)
