Amy - in what way has short hair been more work than longer hair? Just curious...

I actually took a picture of Michelle Williams in to my hair dresser when I went really short--so of course, I understand the attraction. I think you've received some really good advice from the other ladies.

I also have been surprised to discover that hair this short can require more maintenance than a bob like yours (which is what I used to wear).

This could be such an exciting change! I think the advice from everyone is spot-on. Re. makeup: For everyday, I just wear concealer under my eyes and around the sides of my nose, powder, and maybe a teeny bit of lip gloss or lip stick. I don't look at all like I'm even wearing makeup, but it does even out my skin (my cheeks can get very rosy), make me look less tired, and hide my pimples if I happen to have any. I usually put it on at a stoplight in the car, as I'm driving to work :). My point is that you can wear a little bit without looking like you are wearing any. I wonder if your bio prof crowd might be wearing a teensy bit, but it just doesn't show? These would be some baby steps you could take, if you were thinking about going with the pixie and sporting some eye makeup eventually!

Suz, San, and Isis - thanks for all of the makeup advice. I feel like I'm in tenth grade or something. But, oh well ; ) Good thing I have you ladies to help me out. The crowds I run with are not the makeup-wearing types!

Parsley - I LOVE your pixie! You look great, now, too, but both styles suit you so well. Good to know that short hair doesn't always mean easy hair.

Hmmm, Khris - I have never once thought "weak chin" when I've looked at your pics. I think you're being too hard on yourself.

Alright, next time I get my hair cut, I'm going to bring pics along and just TALK about the possibility!

Sarah and Ana, thanks for the props on my hair! It doesnt' show up that well in pictures here, but it is cut short in the back and then angles down to a bob in the front. Very low maintenance. I sometimes blow dry it and sometimes don't. My hair is stick straight. It actually isn't that different from your current haircut, except for bangs, and probably more layers in the back.

I think if you are attracted to a pixie, you should go for it! If you have to use product and blow dry it, I don't think it would take too long. A dramatic change is really fun!

I also never wear makeup. In fact I'd never worn any in my life until a friend had a makeup party at a salon, about 5 yrs ago, and we got makeovers. The people at the salon showed me how, and now I sometimes wear makeup when I go out. (Eyeshadow and a powdered eye liner, both in brown, very subtle. And a natural looking lipstick). It actually is really fun. I don't wear it most days because I generally run late in the morning, and also I haven't figured out how not to smear it all over during the day; I guess I touch my face a lot. Anyway, this is a long winded way to say that you might want to try makeup someday with a professional as it is a fun thing. Tell them you want a very natural look.....

Sarah, I also have worn my hair in a pixie style in the past, and I think Suz, Ana, Angie, and others have given you advice. I found that when my hair was very short I felt like I really needed some eye makeup in order to feel like I looked good. I also felt better in large-ish earrings, and even found that I dressed differently; wanting more details and embellishment in my clothes.

Anyway, all that may not be your experience, but you might be surprised how a haircut impacts your whole look, often in a good way, but it definitely has an impact.

Mine was not as low maintenance as some people's. It was super-quick to dry, but definitely benefitted from some styling product or it would go flat and look like a boy's. I could never just jump out of bed and go in the morning because my hair would be sticking out in 5 different directions. Yours might be easier since it's straighter.

Best of luck with your hairstyle change! You have beautiful hair, and I can imagine a cut like Michelle Williams' looking great on you!

I think you have great features and face shape for short hair. You really have similar face shape as Michelle Williams, who is so gorgeous in a pixie. I hope you go for it!
I used to not do anything to my eyebrows but once I tried it I was hooked. I use the Anastasia brow kit which is a brush and a powder. I don't use the frames that come with the kit though. For me it's easy to apply and very forgiving. In other words I'm no artist yet I can handle putting this on my brows. Maybe you could stop at a makeup counter and ask them to do your brows lightly. Make sure they know you want a very natural look. My guess is that no one would even notice you had done anything they would just think you somehow just looked a little better than your normal gorgeous self.
And by the way, your hair is so beautiful, silky, and shiney. I think the layers in a pixie would let the light play off it is a great way.

My mom were just talking about longer verses short hair the other day. For me, it's super easy to care for. Yes, it requires more frequent cuts, but it dries quickly, looks better messy, and in general just takes less styling. I think that facial features play an important role in whether or not short will work for you, but I think you will look great (as opposed to em with my weak chin). I can't wait to see what your stylist does!

I use L'Oréal True Match. Again, it's not expensive, it comes in several tones for fair skin (I get the neutral, I think) and it goes on smoothly without making wrinkles more obvious on my dry skin. I hope.

The coverage is not what I would call absolute but for the price it does a reasonable job. Every now and again I try a different brand but always go back to this one. I don't wear foundation or anything like that on top. Just the concealer.

Sarah, the gel and pencil are on the same implement (at least in the brand I've mentioned); the gel is sort of like mascara with a wand (but much lighter coloured!) and the pencil is, well...a pencil! My brows are really thin so I sort of need to fill in a bit where they don't exist, so I use the pencil a bit for that. But someone with fully formed brows could just brush the gel on and go.

You can dye your own eyebrows but I wouldn't recommend it for the first few times. You'll want someone to shape and then tint them and for that you need a professional. I find if I get mine shaped a few times a year I can maintain that shape myself between times (but again, mine are so very sparse it's not a lot of work). Sadly the tinting only lasts me a few weeks so although it is not super expensive by any means, it would get expensive if I did it all the time, which is why I use pencil as a rule and save the tinting for a few times per year.

Hi Sarah, I thought I would chime in with my tuppence worth of knowledge on the subject. I'm currently growing out my pixie, not because I did not like the look but because I am easily bored. I had my hair cut short to work with my natural texture which meant no more blow drying and no hair product. However, it inevitably means I have good hair days and a few horror hair days.

To achieve the body evident in Michelle's pictures I do believe blow drying or a texturising product may be required. Do you know forum member Katiepea? I could see you rocking a short style of that ilk.

Sarah, I ditto everything Ana said. Here are some additional thoughts and experiences for what they are worth:

Makeup: I am like Angie; I wear a little bit almost every day. Not a lot, but a little. And with short hair, like Ana, I feel I need it a bit more. My absolute necessities? A bit of lip gloss or at least lip balm (the latter is probably okay in your book, I'd guess); my concealing cream for my inherited undereye circles (probably not a necessity for you); eyebrow pencil. A couple of times a year I splurge and have my eyebrows tinted but in between times I resort to the pencil.

The pencil I use, if you want to try it out, is nothing special, expensive, or fancy. It is Revlon's Brow Fantasy Pencil and Gel in Dark Blonde 104. In fact, if your brows are thick you might be able to use the gel alone (sort of like mascara for your eyebrows). You just brush it on and go. You could try this in the privacy of your own home and see how you feel about a slightly darker brow. The degree of darkness is very controllable; I put a bit on and sort of wipe it off so it's a bit lighter but still enough to frame the eyes. HUGE improvement; check out Julie's brow thread from the other day to see: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ow-edition

It's not like wearing coloured makeup. It's a very different thing than blush or coloured eyeliner. It doesn't feel "made up" or "girly." It just sort of finishes the face and gives the features the emphasis they deserve. When you are very low contrast, it adds expression to your face.

Upkeep: In my experience, short hair requires LESS upkeep (for me, personally) than long. Yes, I need it cut more frequently. But not that much more often. When my hair was longer I got it trimmed every 2 months; now I go every six weeks to 2 months. If I wait the full 2 months it does look a bit ragged, but I can usually deal with it by using a bit of product. I know you said you don't use product, but a good stylist could show you some that might be helpful.

I also spend a lot less time styling it (or trying to style it). My hair is air dried, unless I'm in a huge rush. I wash it about twice a week. Many mornings, I just wake up, finger comb, and go. Other days I might run the straightening iron through my bangs (takes 5 seconds). That depends a bit on how I've slept on it and what the weather is like. Humidity can make it look a bit different. I sometimes use product but that is more to achieve a slightly different look—more piecey or textured or punky. FWIW, my hair is very thick (VERY); fine textured, mostly straight but with a slight wave.

I think you'd look super in short hair and it could fit very well with your style persona. So I'm all for a cut!

I have thick wavy hair that was very hard for me to style when it was long. Gradually, I cut it shorter and shorter, eventually ending up with a pixie cut 4 years ago. I still do use products to get some texture and occasionally need to blow dry when the hair gets a tad longer.

All the points made before me are very valid. I think it would be best to discuss your options with an experienced hair stylist you trust. They can give you recommendations based on the shape of your face and skull, hair texture, etc. And even if you are not very happy with the result when you do get your hair cut, the hair will grow back sooner or later. This could be a transformative opportunity, but you won't find out until you do it.

I wear little to no make up on a daily basis and don't feel masculine because of my hair, but it could also be because the rest of my style is on the feminine side. I do feel much more put together together with the short hair, because I don't have the frizz and flyaways issues anymore, which used to drive me insane with long hair. Again, this may not be your case if your hair is naturally straight.

You are all SOOO helpful.

Claudia - great point. My hairdresser actually cuts hair out of her basement (she's a SAHM), so my cuts are pretty inexpensive, and I'm lucky to have naturally blonde hair, so no dying involved. Right now, I get my hair cut every 5-6 weeks anyway, so I don't think it would a super big change.

Heather and Mochi - good points about eyebrows, and good suggestion, Heather. I don't even know where to start with colors, products, etc! Honestly, you have NO IDEA how little I know about makeup. I don't own any except one tube of lipstick that I have worn on approximately 3 occasions. I know I'm a bit of a freak around here (YLF), but ah well. In my line of work (biology professor), it's actually the environmental norm to wear no makeup - rather than the other way around. And with my fair skin, makeup is so OBvious.

Sarah, stop by a cosmetic counter one morning whilst at the mall. Have them pencil on a darker brow for you and rock it all day. See how you feel at day's end.

Trust me, I have lighter brows and am resistant to it, but then the results are incredible.

I think you could rock this hair do like nobody's biznass.

Yes, on all what Ana said.

I will also add the reality check of the every 4-5 week expense. I had my hair like this for decades. I loved it and it looked great all the time. I always got compliments and strangers asking where I got my hair cut. I miss it! But I have been putting two kids through college and the monthly expense of cut and highlighting of about $120 w/tips had to stop. Highlights and/or low lights, especially as we get older and our hair isn't as shiny, really make this cut sing and bring out the layers. Add your eye brow dyeing to the cost.

If you can afford this I say go for it. It is a fantastic look. As soon as I can afford to go back to the upkeep of this style, I am running to the hair stylist.

Wow, Ana's reply was entirely thorough and helpful. I doubt anyone could top it.

I would only add that if you're leery of dyeing your eyebrows, why not try using a darker pencil on them--completely impermanent, but you'd see the effect it would have on your face and be able to take a more permanent step if you like it.

I realize some people have very light, wispy eyebrows, but they have a big role in framing the face. (In Sex and the City, it always bugged me that the actress who played Miranda had these almost invisible eyebrows. Since the show dealt so much with fashion, beauty, women's self-perception, etc., anyway, I feel safe saying that she would have looked much better with something there.)

Ana, I really appreciate your long and thoughtful answer. WOW. You bring up so many good points. My haircutter does cut my sister's hair in a cut that's not all that dissimilar (altho my sister has dark wavy hair and olive skin, so you'd never know we were related). But you bring up the makeup point, as Angie did, which again is a pretty big deal for me. I'll have to think carefully about that. I do like your idea of getting an intermediate cut to "try it out". I noticed MNSara's hair is a bit shorter now, and I love Isis's hair as well, although it might drive me batty going in my eyes.

I suppose I could wait until early summer to go whole-hog - then I'd be out of the classroom for 3 months or so...

Your hair is adorable by the way ; )

Thanks, Helen and Angie.

Oh, Angie, I think that dying eyebrows would make me feel as uncomfortable as makeup does. (Honestly, the thought of it makes me sort of queasy - I can't explain why - I think because it doesn't feel like "me"). Would more bangs help with that issue? I am fine with frequent haircuts, though. Since my bob got shorter, I've been getting my hair cut pretty often, and now that my kids aren't toddlers, that works OK with the busy life...

Hi Sarah!

I love Michelle Williams' hair in the first photo. I think it's a little softer than the other two photos with the longer bangs. My hair is currently cut in a similar style.

1) I think short hair would work with your hair. Mine is also fine, but thick and naturally curly. Is your hair stick straight naturally? I need to blow dry my hair every morning, and then use a straightener on the bangs. Sometimes a short style can actually take a little more time than a longer style. But it looks like your hair is at a length right now that you can't just pull it back if you're in a hurry, so this point might be moot for you. If your hair is straight naturally, then you might not have to do any blowdrying, depending on the cut. It just really depends.

2) I think there is a short cut for every style persona. You just have to find the right one. I think my style is playful classic/preppy and like I said, I have a cut close to the first photo.

3) So here's the thing with short hair. Personally, I think most women look best with at least a little bit of makeup on if they have very short hair. Mascara, eyebrow pencil and gloss at the least. I know you said you don't wear any makeup. I think it's fine. You might find that you feel like you look more masculine with short hair and absolutely no makeup. I'm not saying you WOULD look that way, but you might FEEL that way, especially if you're having a "blah" day (speaking from experience here). But then, maybe you wouldn't feel that way at all, ever. It really just depends on you. It's just something to think about. I wear at least a little bit of makeup every day and I know I just feel more polished and feminine wearing it, especially since I cut my hair short three years ago. But like I said, that's just my personal experience and feelings on the subject.

4) I'm definitely all for taking big style leaps like this! I think it's exciting and I would say go for it! One thing: make sure you find a stylist who feels comfortable and is actually EXCITED about cutting short hair. Having had both an excited stylist and a competent but not excited stylist, I can tell you that it does make a big difference.

5) A little reality check to think about: If you cut your hair that short and end up not liking it, it might take a year or more to get back to your current length. Like I said, just something to consider. If you're nervous about pulling the trigger and wanted to go for something a little more intermediate, have you seen Isis' haircut? I think that one is super flattering, and might look really good on you and work with your fine hair. Either way, it sounds like you're ready for a hairstyle change and you should definitely pursue one that will make you happy.

Let us know what you decide! I'm very excited for you!

That pixie is a divine cut - and I hope you've got a talented hairdresser in the wings! You said your hair is fine, so it's the perfect texture for a short layered cut like that. It will probably be minimal styling for you (wash and finger style) - you'll just need upkeep trims every month or so! Go for it! And bring the pic you love to the salon!
