Hi Stefanie --

Lisa and La Belle D have great advice for the emotional and practical elements...setting expectations is key.

If it doesn't sell, community or school theater groups might be interested in adding it to their costume collections. Maybe a place that has some connection or memories for your gentleman or his late wife....

And there's always the option of giving it to animal welfare groups -- some use old furs as bedding for the animals. [Google can give info on this] My family talked about doing this with one of my grandmother's modest furs but we decided that while she loved animals, she'd rise from the dead if we chose that option!]

This looks like sheared mink to me. If it's in good condition - i.e., no bald patches, no storage or musty smells (or any other strong smells, for that matter), and if isn't shedding, you're off to a good start.

Check inside any pockets, often you'll find there's a label sewn in there.

I'm curious about the sweater parts, that kind of makes it more casual, and a little less 'valuable' for resale than if it were an actual coat, sewn onto leather or wool.

Figure out the condition. To me, it looks great in the photos. If it's in excellent condition - i.e., not stinky and not shedding, and not ripped or balding, I would try listing it for $175 on eBay, using the Buy It Now option. I've sold vintage furs that I've picked up at estate sales and thrift stores (mink and fox) in the $150-250 range, and it always went quickly.

If it doesn't sell in the next 4-6 weeks, I'd lower it to $125-150.

I just searched "Saks Furs" on eBay, and I think $175 for a jacket that's almost entirely genuinely fur would sell quickly. I would try and get the fur type ID'd, and list it as a "Genuine <furtype> Bomber Jacket".

FYI, if you do list it, put it on a mannekin or dressmaker form, or have someone model it for photos, in very good light. It will sell quicker.

Also, Lisa P is right - your friend isn't going to make a fortune on this, but it could bring it some nice spending money for him. It's hard to say, without really knowing what your secondhand clothing markets are. In Atlanta, I see secondhand furs in decent shape, ranging from $200-650, and they go FAST, usually within days. There's a lively community of women here who thrift and consign and love their luxury vintage stuff. If you're in a small town with a hot climate, such as Florida... it probably won't sell for nearly that.

I think he might be expecting to sell for more than it likely will. Pieces like these show up in vintage and second-hand stores all the time, and unless it's a designer original, they aren't worth anything much , sorry to say.

Try calling Neiman’s for advice on authenticating. They’re a real fur hold out.

Is there somewhere you can have it authenticated?
I would think even a reputable dry cleaner could do that for you.
Or , call Saks and speak to someone in their fur salon.

Stephanie, your elderly friend and his wife probably cherished this coat as a prize possession. It looks beautiful and warm and a more modern style than most. Did you try it on? Fur is supposed to be coming back. How do you feel about you or anyone wearing it? It also depends on where you live. I hear that women in Florida regularly wear mink coats if the temperature drops into the 30'sF. Other places you may be harassed.

Ok so i have a fur coat I know nothing about. Received it from an elderly friend who's wife passed away. It has a tag that says Saks Fifth Avenue, but nothing else. Feels like real fur, but not 100% as there are no other tags or labels anywhere. its only major distinguishing feature is some golden buttons with what looks like an eagle crest on it. PLEASE HELP!!

Hyper Link included with photos, i hope works
