Madeline, I’m glad you posted that. Due to an incident involving pudding in the pocket, my puffer is about to get a mid-season refresh. I’ll be careful about the dryer setting.

Glad you have the molting problem sorted. As far as the smell when drying the coat, I wonder if the dryer setting is too hot.

I had a similar problem with a coat from Marmot. It was my only winter coat so I kept wearing it, and also, because it was from a company I really respected, I had a hard time acknowledging that the problem wasn't getting better.

After a particularly embarrassing mess making episode I called Marmot to ask if there was a special product I could wash it in to seal it. They asked me for a code on the label, said they'd been having trouble with that manufacturer, and two days later I received the newer model of the same coat compliments of the company.

No more problems with feathers, trust in Marmot completely restored. Maybe you could contact the company directly?

OK, after some looking I found a similar coat at Macy's. It is a size too big, but the reviewers say it runs small. It doesn't have a very good rating, but it seems that most people are complaining about the size. I'm going to give it a shot since no one mentioned the coat being a feather farm. I hope it's warm.

In looking around for another coat, I am surprised at how many reviewers complain about quality. A decently made puffer is a rare bird, it seems. I wish I had money for Canada Goose, but I don't...so I'll have to see how this one pans out.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one to deal with this scourge!

The problem with my finding another coat to finish out the winter is that I wear an uncommon size, XXSP. I am very short and have very narrow shoulders, and coats that aren't petite sizing just don't work for me. So the coats are very picked over at this point, and the ones that I see are left do not look very warm, or else they do not cover my backside (coverage is a necessity in my climate).

But I wonder if I try something like putting sealant on the seams (I could try some Fray Check, which I used to use when I did cross stitch) if Macy's will refuse to take it back. Sometimes stores don't want to take back stuff that's been messed with.

This is my third puffer, and I have never had this issue before. My other two would occasionally sprout feathers, but it wasn't anything that made me wonder what was going on. My previous puffer did start to release a lot of feathers, but at that point I discovered it had a small hole in it, which I fixed. Even the amount of feathers released by that puffer is nowhere near what I experience with this one.

Bonus question: When I wash this puffer and dry it, it has an awful odor, like sour sweat. When I take it out of the washer it smells fine--it's the drying that causes the odor. Is this normal?

Ugh, what a disappointment. I’d say return also. It will only get worse. By contrast, I have three puffers (one long and two short), and it took quite a few wears before any feathers popped through the nicest one (Canada Goose). The others sprout a feather or two every few wears, but it’s manageable. It sounds like this coat has more quality issues than any coat should.

I would return this. I can see that it is a lovely looking coat, but the feather problem is likely to get worse rather than improve. At least winter is almost over for you.

Agreeing with Staysfit! The seams will just continue to loosen and you'll want to replace the coat anyway.

Return it to Macy’s! A similar problem happened with my friends coat from Macy’s last year and they accepted the return and she was able to find a replacement on sale for less that she liked even better and has done well for her this winter.

You made me laugh with "come out of a barn"! From what you say the construction of this puffer is really bad. I have puffers that are twenty years old and never lost a feather. I can only think of applying tape on the loosened seams but I understand it is a big fuss, and after all it is not worth. I agree with Cjh. Look for another puffer, return this to Macy's and complain!

If it helps at all feathers on my Northface coat are still coming through after much wear and washing, 3 years after purchasing. I may be unlucky but I thought by going for a gear brand (kind of) I would avoid it. I haven’t found a cure!

It seems ordering or finding one before returning, or returning in Brick and mortar and immediately finding a new one in the same store might be the best solution. After all, you paid good money and now have an inferior product that is costing you more for repairs and annoying as well. You need a refund.

I bought this puffer from Macy's this winter and was initially thrilled with it. The fit was great, I loved the color, and it was very warm. However, as the months have worn on, the jacket has exhibited many signs of poor workmanship. I had big holes in the pockets after just a couple of weeks of wear, and one of the pockets started separating from the lining. I had that fixed by a seamstress.

The biggest problem, however, has been the seams in the lining of the coat. They are not well done, and LOTS of feathers are coming through. I swear, sometimes I look like I came out of a barn, especially if I am wearing a lighter-colored top. I don't know much about sewing, but it looks as if the lining material is not strong enough to hold the seams. I had one large hole open up in an armpit seam (a two-inch-long rip), and I fixed that myself, but now the vertical seams where the lining is pieced together are showing wear, and it's feathers galore. I would call Macy's to see if I could return the coat, but this is my only winter coat, so I need it. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do? Is there something that I could spray or paint over the seams to limit the number of feathers that come out?
