Thanks y’all if only because it confirms my suspicion about waistlines.I don’t tuck things in so I have some wiggle room. My main issue with second hand is finding my size as I usually go up a size for each previous decade (mainly pre-2010)in bottoms and dresses.

The column of color idea makes sense. I love a long maxi dress.I look taller than I am and have well developed calves with smaller ankles so I wear tea length skirts often.
I’m a deep autumn going into deep winter so I have quite a wide color palette to work with.

My main fashion decades are the teens,30s and 70s so luckily much of what’s popular works for me shape wise for now.

My torso is short in that I am a bit short waisted. My tip is, if you wear belts, match them to your top. Dress in a column of color so that the eye moves up and down.

I have the opposite (or almost opposite) issue -- I'm long in the rise. But I'm also short waisted. ;) And not tall, at 5' 4".

I agree with getting as many measurements as you can before purchase. It really helps. Ophelia's also right that skirts disguise a myriad of issues. However, if they come up to your true waist and you are very short waisted you still might feel uncomfortably cut up in them. So then the trick would be in styling them so that the tops and skirt were low contrast, and/or wearing a topper that helps disguise areas you'd rather disguise and emphasizes attributes.

Agree w/ SarahD8 re finding low-rise on ebay. I notice most retailers now list 9 & 10 inch rise as mid-rise.
I don’t like pants & usually wear skirts, thereby skirting-ha!-the whole rise issue, but literally every pair of pants & jeans I own come from ebay. (Way cheaper too.) If they don’t list rise & inseam, I just keep looking.

Hello fellow Sarah, I also have a short rise and find 7.5 inches to be a good bellybutton- skimming fit for me. At least, in very fitted bottoms like skinnies. I can go a little longer, like 8 or 8.5, in looser cut bottoms. I have a couple pairs of slouchy sweats with a 10” rise that work but I just bought a pair of corduroy joggers with a similar rise measurement and — wow, nope.

My solution has been to shop secondhand. Many eBay listings include rise measurements or sellers will provide them if you ask. At least up until a few years ago old navy made a low-rise skinny jean in its rockstar line. Other than that, I have not bought pants at retail in many years.

Hi Sarah, I find the easiest thing is to ignore the labelling and focus on the measurement ... So just measure the rise you want roughly and search for pants with the rise. Like sizes, labels such as "ultra high rise" etc seem to be more marketing than information as far as I can tell. You have a great handle on what you are looking for it sounds like!

I am a plus sized slightly curvy (by conventional definition. All of my main body mesurments are within 5 inches of each other.) Flamboyant Natural who carries her weight through the center of her body.$0 of my 65 inches are from my hip down. From my shoulder to the top of my hip is 11 inches.

I find many waisted items have the waist hit me mid hip. Many maternity styles fit me well and hit me at underbust.Tunic lengths are often long enough to not be dress coded.Long crop tops hit me at mid hip and short ones hit at my belly button.

I'm looking for mid-rise jeans for me (so low rise about 7.5ish inches to hit at my belly button.) as labeled mid rises hit at the top of my belly button to a couple of inches above it.Actual high rises hit about my under bust or over.
i'm mainly looking for bottoms.
