My favourite way to add some edge to a basic shift dress is to add an interesting jacket and either heels or boots. I have the jacket below and when I bought it, I was sceptical about whether I would get much wear from it, but it has quickly become a firm favourite.

How about a big bold orange scarf with fringe and tassles over everything?
Replace some of the blue with black.
Make sure that you have a modern hair style. Nothing says edgy like spiked hair.

Slim, ankle trousers with the same blouse and loafers, maybe? Or a slim turtleneck sweater with the same skirt and same loafers with plain tights? Or, same top and skirt with tall boots?

I like all these ideas. You have some nice pieces which combined for a traditional dressy and lovely look, My first reaction, if I were looking to update or "edge up", is to take one item out and replace with something much edgier, casual, or trendy-modern:

Skirt: pleather, or just wear slim, ankle pants, maybe tuxedo stripe-style or ponte.

Blouse: graphic tee or bold print pussy bow blouse

Cardigan: pleather vest or blazer or denim jacket, or I like the idea of wearing it buttoned up as the main top. Then top IT with a vest?

Tights: sheer, dark, patterned

Shoes: booties, two tone calf hair oxfords, block heel pumps, etc.

hmmmm...I think I'd skip the blouse and just wear the cardigan over a tee or tank (unless you planned to take the cardigan off?). I'd wear it as umfrumped suggested button so that it acted like a pullover. if you are comfortable with it, I'd add a belt to give your self some shape. 3rd picture is an example of a pretty conservative outfit, but her makeup takes it to a different place, not sure if you could/would do something like that.

My favorite piece to add a little edge is my pleather moto vest. It is similar to the one below but slightly longer so it is in the sweet place that works with both skirts and pants. Cardigans look terrible on me, and I find that vests/gilets give me the same ease of movement. Those loafers look very comfortable but look fairly classic, so less classic footwear is another idea.

From your description and photos, I'm sure you looked lovely and work appropriate. This was for work, right? And not a rock concert or clubbing? If this was for work, IMHO it is better to be overly dressy and conservative than the other way such that you would be the object of whispers.

I like to wear some cardigans buttoned up, just as if a pullover. I have several on the go right now. But I have the same issue- if I wear them with classic trousers or with tomboy loafers it looks too conservative and staid. Booties help with pencil skirt/ tights, or cropped pants for pants. In summer I wore some more feminine flats and ankle straps. With my trusty pencil skirt- tights look I also find a boxy knit sweater or a shirttail hem or hi- low hem sweater looks better. If the sweater is a little trendy, then the loafers also may work. Or maybe the tights need to be sleeker, not too bulky like a cable knit might be.

I think you could substitute a different shirt, a more casual shirt, cotton with a collar. Like chambray or even plaid. Maybe white, but that might make it a little too school girly. And go untucked?

To my eye, these are 5 quite conservative/classic/basic pieces. All good in their own domain, but together is one full-on classic/conservative look. I think by simply removing one of these classic pieces (and my first might be swapping the loafers for a heel or a bootie) and maybe swapping the cardigan for a print scarf.....you would get a completely different look. Or, keep the shoes, but wear a fluid fit knit top and add that same scarf.....

I haven't got any photos to show you, but I'm unhappy with what I wore today, it felt frumpy and uncool, and I'd like some help in evaluating if it could be fixed.

I had on
a mid-blue blouse with a vertical slash neckline with bubble (gathered hem)
a dark blue/light blue/duck egg check heavy wool knee length pencil skirt
teal patterned wool tights
dark teal round neck cardigan
black loafers

I think the cardigan was definitely a poor choice - too conservative. Overall I felt I was dressing older than I am and not edgy enough (it didn't help that most people I was with today were wearing casual. Note to self, check email instructions).

Do you have any suggestions?

Edited to add pictures of items - the blouse is similar but lighter, others are store photos of the actual items.
