Great advice and wisdom on this thread. I really only need my boots stretched *slightly* - I don't even think I'd want them stretched a full half inch, more like a quarter inch - and my calves have really not grown a lot, but just enough in the wrong place so that the last 3 inches of zipping my boot is very difficult. I wouldn't mind having a little tiny bit more room even if my calves *do* shrink slightly.

Okay, come 2011 I will give the Nordstrom flagship shoe repair a shot. If I'm SYC-ing the quality pieces in my closet anyway, I can focus on maintaining and repairing my existing wardrobe.

Thanks for your feedback!

Yep cloud9, my boots are definitely tighter at the end if the day than in the morning.

Kari, I'd be interested to see what Nordies says.

Hmmm, interesting, I have never heard of leather "shrinking".. , only stretching out. I still suspect water retention (vs weight gain). Water retention is usually all over body, that happens to me sometimes, especially a few days before periods. I definitely could see a difference with my boots. I have wide calf, so sometimes even at the end of day I can feel tightness in the calf area.

Oh, no! I feel your pain. I know how hard it is to find boots that fit, and your boots are such a big part of your wardrobe.

If you just need a little easement, I'm sure it can be done. Good luck!

I have "athletic" calves and have needed knee-length boots stretched at the tops. Any cobbler or shoe repair / fine shoe store can do it - but it can't stretch too much, only half an inch or so. And it cannot be reversed! And it takes a few days.

i'd just be reluctant to alter boots if they used to fit. i'd be worried that my calves might shrink and then the boots would be too loose.

It's been gradual since September (the start of boot season), but I've never had this happen before.

Unfortunately, unlike other parts of my body, my calf size doesn't really seem to correspond to weight gain or weight loss.

Before you do anything, do you think the boots have gradually been getting tighter on you or was it sudden? You could just be temporarily retaining more water or a change in humidity could cause the boots to fit differently.

I'm a little nervous because some of my boots that used to be simply close-fitting are suddenly very tight at the top of the calf, like to the point where I'm afraid the zipper might not go all the way up.

I know some of you have had boots stretched by cobblers, but the only professional shoe repair service I have ever had is to get my heels re-tipped.

How much can (or should) they get stretched? Can they stretch them in a single spot, such as the top of the calf, so I don't end up with incredibly baggy ankles? Are there certain kinds of leather that are stretchable, and others that aren't? What should I expect so far as cost? Can any cobber do this, or should I take my boots to a specialist (Nordstrom flagship? Or the manufacturer, since one of the pairs are Clarks boots?)
