I'm feeling very averse to style at the moment myself. I find myself grabbing a backpack most of the time when I go out (the horror! What would Ines say!?) I am not thinking I'm depressed at all, just....not excited about it. Maybe this is normal. Also I can't find it in myself to dress up in summer when it's hot, I'm running everywhere, biking, etc. The test for me will be how much I care once the cooler weather hits...

Krish, I'm coming at this from a slightly different angle, I came to YLF with two small children and had a tremendous amount of fun playing with my wardrobe. Then life grew complicated and I turned to fashion for a distraction, however, rather than fun I over analysed every look. When life began to settle I pulled away from fashion and YLF, I found this to be healthy and a way of finding equilibrium again. I have now gone full circle and I'm back on the forum with a renewed energy and new perspective.

I guess my muddled post is a way of saying I also believe the fog will lift and you will find your style mojo once more.

KD -- yep, this happens all right. Like MsMary, I'm very focused on our new house at the moment, and it's draining most of my clothing energy. (Ironic, since the new house has a fabulous closet n the master bedroom.)

I'm pretty sure my enthusiasm will return. It's happened before, and I always hit a point when I see items I love and get interested in freshening things up in my wardrobe.

@Adelfa: Necessity is the mother of ... what again?

I dare to believe that it is only a bump on a longer style journey. First, there was the necessity of putting the wardrobe in order. That was my first year with YLF: identifying orphans and wardrobe holes for a basic, workable wardrobe adapted to my climate. Then came necessity of direction: finding my style, putting words to feelings towards how I dressed, being a bit more adventurous with my purchases, trying things out of my comfort zone... finally, came necessity of settling for a specific basic style that I could always fall back on, that all my clothes would agree with on some level so I could build cute outfits without thinking about it too much. In my case I found out , much to my surprise, that this "basic" underlying style was of "preppy" inspiration. This was a great Aha moment for me because finally I was grounded. I was there when this "funk" happened.

I'm there too, krish. And spending so little time on the forum that I didn't realize others are too. Peri is a genius for making the parallel to how the cold weather fabbers were sounding last Spring. Yes! My summer wardrobe is set, and it's far too early to worry much about Fall. Though I made sure to buy some darker/deeper colored summer tops that I can wear into Fall, which is sure to be about the same temperature as Summer, sigh!

In some ways it's a relief to think less about fashion and style. I was starting to worry about myself, lol. But I know as soon as I have some actual wardrobe needs, I'll be back!

@Runcarla: Oh, you are busy! I hope your interest in fashion - and time for it - comes back soon, because I always am looking for your posts, usually witty and wise, and I love your style. Me too, have only replaced things this summer, and me too, thanks to YLF, am with a good wardrobe that I like and that works together. I just hope it holds on for another season. Thank you for suggesting to care for oneself. I continue to do my nails and pedicures (I have a little ritual), it has proven most relaxing I must admit.

@bj1111: You put it very clearly. I think you have a point. So you say that after all this rollercoaster journey, and after a year long "soberness", you are now ready to explore current trends but only if it is with a specific outfit formula repeated in various colors and textures?

@MsMary: I can only identify with you here. Your new place must be exquisite and elegant! As of cycles: let's hope so! ;)

@Suz: And if you say so too, then it must be true! Thank you for your wise words.

@Peri: Thank you for pointing out that this phenomenon might not be isolated. It is good to know this, because then it is not just me, and maybe there will be more solutions. I am certainly looking forward to the butterflies, it's such a good, light, encouraging mental image with which to replace the frumpy matronly lady who looks like my paternal grandmother occupying my poor brain right now.

@Gigi: I am so sorry to hear about both the money and health concerns you have now. Let's hope you feel better soon. You are ever so correct on the blank slate. It is a bit like this that I have been feeling!

To all of you thanks a million! Just by reading you and spending a bit of time here, I am starting to feel the itch to go fill that new accessory unit, and maybe try on a thing or two. ;)

My love for fashion has cooled off a bit too. I think that is because of two things: money issues, so I have to cut back; and increasing fatigue due to heath issues. But I am hoping that it will come back when both of those are back to normal.

In your case, since you have had such drastic changes in your life, it makes sense that fashion will take a backseat for a while. Separating from your DH is huge and is partly an identity change, not identifying yourself in the same way anymore. It makes you a bit of a "blank slate" for a while, until the "new you" starts to develop. So I'm with Peri: sounds like cocoon time!

I think there have been a lot of posts like this in the last month so you are not at all alone. Even without the big changes, this is slump season. I am in one myself, just don't care anymore. I did better with summer clothes than most years, but I'm tired of everything and cooler weather is still 2 months off. I'm looking forward to some of last years favorites but in no mood at all to shop for cool weather clothes this far ahead. And I remember the northern fabbers sounded like this last spring.

Add in your major life changes and I think you should cut yourself some slack. Maybe it's just cocoon time, with butterflies waiting at the end of it.

Absolutely -- it goes in cycles, and you are at a place now where your energies need to be elsewhere, which it completely understandable and even good! I am glad you are finding your feet in a new home and hope the work is going well. And I am sure your fashion moxie will return when you have the energy to invest there. Or, if it does not, so be it! Perhaps you will move in another direction entirely!

But I tend to think it can and does come back after a hiatus if it is deeply inherent to a person, as I think it is to you.

I think these things go in cycles. I was all about the clothes for the past several years, but then I bought a house and I am in the midst of a giant inside-and-out renovation an that is taking every single bit of my creative energy (not to mention every penny of my money!). So fashion is taking a back seat for the moment. I'm just happy to have my lovely wardrobe to fall back on while I'm occupied with other things.

@krishnadoux, lots of life changes even positive ones can make ourselves unrecognizable. How can we possibly dress oneself when we don't recognize who we are! This has been the last two years for me...first I shopped like a mad woman trying on different personalities because it looked so good on other fabbers. Then I just went through a year long fast, inadvertent but I guess really good for me. Now I'm coming out and I still don't know how to dress, except I'm ready for a uniform.

@Louise, I remember when you mentioned the stress at home. I'm glad you are on the other side, recovering yourself!

I like @Runcarla's suggestion of nonpermanent and less expensive pick me ups. How about being a redhead for a few months, Krish?

With the big events that occur in life, and which normally bring stress-good and bad kinds, the time and enthusiasm we have for activities beyond just coping with the day-to-day, is in limited supply! Having just effected a move and new job in the past 8 months, I can count on 2 hands the new items I've added to my closet, and still have fingers to spare! None of the items I've purchased signal a change in my style direction, but rather fill a necessary gap (flat shoes!) or replace/update something I already own and know works for me.

Like you, KD, I haven't been inspired by what I'm seeing 'trending', but I skew classic/casual anyway. Fortunately I really like what I have in my closet right now, and can manage a comfortably stylish outfit for most occasions.

Life changes aside, I've observed that there tends to be a rise in posts about fashion malaise on the cusp of a new season as we adjust with transition. I've found that this is a good time for self care that doesn't result in dramatic or permanent change...a hair trim, a mani and/or pedi, experimenting with make-up and beauty products.

You're not alone, I'm just seeing light at the end of the tunnel after an 18 month 'funk'!
Since finding YLF I was an avid forum commenter and shopper spending many many hours on both, 18 months ago the now ex BF and I hit major rocky waters and my desire for shopping and having fun with fashion sank with it. I still got dressed everyday and looked presentable but the fun had gone Just recently I've started wanting to go shopping and adding accessories to outfits and having fun choosing outfits. I'm not quite back to the 'me' before and maybe I never will who knows? I suppose life's events change us and we just have to go with the flow? Though I guess the fact that we're sad about the loss of fashion love should hopefully be an indicator that we'll keep searching for it x

I am so confused. And, frankly, a bit alarmed.

I mean, how can this be happening to me? Me, the clothes lover, the unconditional fashion devotee, the (borderline compulsive) shopper...!
If there is a big fashion moment in my corner of the world, it's now. Transition from summer to fall, back-to-school, fresher temps all are motors for renewed wardrobe interest, and it used to make me feel so happy and eager.

This year, nothing in that department. I find myself with no or very little fashion interest.

What is going on?

Is it the new dark reds that really don't appeal to me? Could be part of the problem, except yesterday, leafing through the latest "In Style" - almost studiously - when I realized that even colors and styles that would have made me jump with excitement do nothing for me now.

Not that I am depressed, far from it. And, true, I've had HUGE changes in my life recently. I separated from my DH and moved out on my own. I have been travelling A LOT and working hard too. At first I thought this was the reason but I feel my malaise is deeper. I don't recognize myself and I am super scared. Call me silly, because maybe I am, but I admit to being scared of becoming major frump without realizing it if I continue like this. At least I have booked hair appointments and intend to go.

I have tried to recreate the clothes loving outfit building friendly atmosphere in my new bedroom, got myself the proper furniture, lighting, etc. yet have had only one single try-out or outfit building session yet in 3 months! Last week a friend helped me built an IKEA unit for storing accessories, which I thought would solve it, but I haven't even started to fill it! I am very, very worried.

Has anyone gone through something like this? Does style-love come back?

UPDATE:

This might be useful to all you fabbers who find themselves in a funk like me:

Yesterday after reading all the comments here I faced my clothes and had a "session", in which I tried on some pieces, but mostly in which I purged. And purged. (I am fortunate to know of a couple of pple who are my exact size and in need of clothes, it really helps when deciding. Do I keep this in my closet/bin/basement/etc. for another year, or do I give it away to this girl I know who is struggling and would appreciate these pieces?). I purged a lot of items including footwear I was holding onto b/c they had been bought at higher prices in foreign countries, or were "unique" pieces, all in excellent condition. But I reassessed them and realized that I had worn them enough, now was time to pass them on, that I had to look forward and not back. Suddenly, I didn't feel the imperative of keeping them anymore. 3 years with YLF has reassured me on a deeper level that I don't need my old clothes to look good, that style can and will happen in the future too, IYKWIM. What worked once doesn't necessarily guarantee it will work again. Plus these pieces reminded me of my ex-life. So maybe, just maybe, here was part of my problem?
