I do tend to like a bit of a heel even for my casual outfits. My legs are disproportionately short so a little heel makes the proportion better...and it also feels better. But some outfits look better to me with flats (riding boots, gladiator sandals.) It's a funkier look that cannot be achieved with heels. My heel max is 2 1/2 ", maybe 3". Otherwise I have trouble walking normally and I hate that look of a fab outfit, but not being able to walk naturally because my heels are so high.

I have to have about 2 inch of lift, or I look like I'm sinking into the ground. So, I don't like flats and nothing more then 3 inch.
And I believe that shoes are the foundation of every outfit, flat or heels, it's very personal and it's ALL OK!

Flats can be every bit as stylish as heels and even better in some situations. Think of a shorter skirt, there's no way I'd wear one with heels but with tights, flats and a turtleneck it suddenly looks mod. Capris look best with flats in my opinion. I also love flat riding boots, they have an elegance that's hard to duplicate with a heeled boot. And I live in ballet flats in warm weather, I'd never trade them for heels, they're just a part of my style.

-Do you believe, 100% sincerely, that flats can be just as stylish as heels?

It really depends on the situation, but overall, a pair of smart flats can be as stylish as heels.

-Are heels always better in terms of style (disregarding appropriateness)? Is there ever a time when flats look better than heels, or are heels always preferable regardless of the outfit?

It depends on the outfit. There are some outfits which do look better with heels, but in a casual or smart-casual settings, flats sometimes look more stylish than heels. Just think about women wearing heels at a sports event or amusement park.

-Do you see any purpose to flats other than just being comfortable or better for your lifestyle?

I think they add a gamine appeal to certain outfits. They can also be used to make an outfit look more casual.

-If you could wear heels comfortably for all of your day to day activities, would you have any use for flats? Would you miss them?

Flats fit into my personal style so I would keep wearing them even if I found heels 100% comfortable.

-Do you appreciate outfits with flats on other women even if you don't on yourself, or do you think all women would look better in heels?

I can appreciate outfits with flats on other women, and I think flats sometimes help to bring an outfit back from over-the-top or too sexy back towards gamine and playful. However there are some outfits which do look better with heels but also do look good with dressy flats.

-What kind of body types, if any, look better in flats? Are there any body types that look better in flats than in heels?

I think petite girls look great in flats. I never really go above 3 inches for my heels as it throws my legs out of proportion to the rest of my body.

I have been converted to flats recently and think they can look very stylish. It all depends on the quality of the shoe and how they are worn. I dont think they suit any particular body type. I find it harder to wear trousers with flats and usually wear skirts and dresses with my flats. I think as someone said, flats convey a different look from heels. I like the simple modesty of a flat shoe. when I want height and authority, I like to wear a heel.

OK, watch out, I'm going to state an unpopular opinion. I wish that heels were not so dominant in magazines and advertising. This is one of those places where I believe function should trump fashion. Permanently injuring your feet or not being able to walk is not worth it. High heels are inherently unnatural things, even though we're all so used to them we don't think about it that way. It changes how you walk and shortens your stride. Most of us lead fairly sedentary lives so it doesn't matter that much, but over time it can affect you seriously.

I do occasionally wear heels, I'm not saying I don't, but it's maybe 1 or 2 days in a week, and they are not super-high. I am including as flats things that may have a slight elevation but a flat base of the shoe, and thinking of heels as the kind of thing with a classic heel like a court shoe.

I know it's easier for me, because my lifestyle and surroundings are casual, and I don't *have* to dress up that often. I think that flats look most appropriate with casual/smart casual outfits and in fact don't really like the look of jeans and heels because I think it's jarring. If you worked at a place that was business suits only, I think it would be a lot more difficult to fight the environmental norm of wearing heels.

Eh, I'm late.

Here are my answers.

"Do you believe, 100% sincerely, that flats can be just as stylish as heels?"

Not necessarily.

"Are heels always better in terms of style (disregarding appropriateness)? Is there ever a time when flats look better than heels, or are heels always preferable regardless of the outfit?"

I still think of heels as more dressy. Plus they bring wide leg pants to life.
I strongly prefer narrow pant legs with flats (skinnies, leggings). Same for short skirts and short dresses. I'd like to pull off a full skirt with flats some day. I also don't like boots with high heels.

"Do you see any purpose to flats other than just being comfortable or better for your lifestyle?"

My answer is the same as above. I like flats for aesthetic reasons. Not all flats are comfy for my feet actually.

"If you could wear heels comfortably for all of your day to day activities, would you have any use for flats? Would you miss them?"

Absolutely (yes to flats, I mean). I like variety.

"Do you appreciate outfits with flats on other women even if you don't on yourself, or do you think all women would look better in heels?"

I absolutely appreciate flats on others.

"What kind of body types, if any, look better in flats? Are there any body types that look better in flats than in heels?"

I don't think it's related.

Moreover, I'm not fond of totally flat shoes. I don't want to feel the pavement through my toes, and I prefer a semblance of a heel for cushioning purposes.

OK Maya, you wanted a strong heel preference view, here you go I'm sure you'll be able to find holes in this, and you're welcome to. It's always hard to do absolutes like this.

"Do you believe, 100% sincerely, that flats can be just as stylish as heels?"
Yes. I think it's style dependent versus outfit dependent though.

"Are heels always better in terms of style (disregarding appropriateness)? Is there ever a time when flats look better than heels, or are heels always preferable regardless of the outfit?"
Personally I think any outfit can look stylish with either type, just depends on what vibe the wearer wants to give off. I find heels to be more polished and posh looking, and flats to be more casual and carefree looking. Heels almost always look better in formal outfits, and if we're disregarding appropriateness I cannot think of a situation where flats look inherently better.

"Do you see any purpose to flats other than just being comfortable or better for your lifestyle?"
Just to change the vibe of a look, really. If I wore a tee+blazer+skinnies and paired with flats, I'd look more casual; if I paired with heels, I'd look more dressy. It's obviously not quite that simple (dark jeans would look dressier in look #1, faded would look more casual in look #2, etc.) but that's my general feeling. It's part of the reason I like to wear heels with my super casual outfits, to give them a bit of dressiness; I dislike the cutesy vibe I get in flats.

"If you could wear heels comfortably for all of your day to day activities, would you have any use for flats? Would you miss them?"
I do wear heels comfortably for my day to day activities, but I also have a desk job. I'd love to say that I wouldn't miss flats if I could just wear heels all the time but that's simply not true; I wear flats mainly when it's warm out, and prefer them to heels for many warm weather outfits (because I like the resort vibe for warm weather looks). I could probably get rid of all but my black flats and be happy though; this is one area of my shoe collection that needs improvement. However, flat shoes in general are pretty uncomfortable to me since I have high arches.

"Do you appreciate outfits with flats on other women even if you don't on yourself, or do you think all women would look better in heels?"
Absolutely appreciate looks with flats. While I do think women look better in SOME heel, I don't think they need to be wearing them all the time.

"What kind of body types, if any, look better in flats? Are there any body types that look better in flats than in heels?"
I don't think it's related to body type.

- Yes, I think flats can be as stylish as heels, as long as they're the right flats with the right outfits.

- Yes, I suppose flats can be more appropriate than heels with certain outfits. I know this must be true, though I can't think of any examples at the moment.

- I can and do wear heels for my day-to-day activities. I prefer at least a bit of a heel. I'm tall and have the big feet to go with my height, and most flats have the ski effect on me. I also have high arches and need a bit of heel for support, and I have a booty and I prefer the more flattering line heels give me from the side. So no, I would not really miss flats if they were to disappear. Except for my Converse, but that's a different story.

- I do think most women look better in some degree of a heel. I know that's not a popular opinion, but you did ask for honesty. Even a 1.5-inch heel will do, though. I just find ballet flats frumpy, and I think everyone walks more gracefully with a bit of a heel. I feel this is the case regardless of body type. However, I also really dislike the super high heels plus short dress/skirt look. I agree that it looks desperate and to me it also throws the proportions of a look all out of whack.

I can't comment on the aesthetic aspects of your questions, but I can say that as a tall person, flats are mandatory in my wardrobe if I hope to maintain my style quotient. PPL would simply not be possible without my assortment of ballet flats, and I am keen to add loafers into the mix for spring. That said, I feel my best when wearing a pair of low heels. Today's outfit, for example, featured two pieces of footwear. I put on a pair of flat calf-length boots for the commute, but was dying to change into my black patent wedges the moment I got to the office. The black sheath dress layered over a red silk blouse probably looked much better with the change in footwear, too.

i think some flats can be more stylish or edgy than some heels, depending on the overall look (flat oxfords vs. stilettos, for instance).

But for me the issue is that it's hard to find true, stylish flats that look good on my feet. I can't wear ballet flats or anything with pointy toes because of my foot shape, and I need arch support because my arches are crazy-high. That is more difficult in a nice flat.

I am also team clunky shoe, which means some sort of chunky heel or big sole.

I share most of your sentiments, Maya! With the exception of dressy dresses and suit dressing, I think flats are just as flattering. I don't like the look of extremely high heels either. I'm tall and have never needed or wanted to add inches to my height. So many more options today, it used to be very tough to find stylish, comfortable flats! We are very lucky today to have so many choices.

I also tend to wear more flats in the summer. I think it's because I'm wearing shorter hemlines, usually with a bare leg, and in this case I much prefer the look of flats or maybe a small wedge.

I also wear flats with skinnier jeans in the summer only, since though I like the look of ballet flats, I need socks and boots for cooler weather! And most of my boots have some heel.

I don't think that every outfit needs heels, or that heels look best with everything. Flats are a more casual look, and work well with casual outfits. I am unable to wear ballet flats (which I love on others) because of foot problems. It leaves me heartbroken. I wear flat sandals, Converse, and small stacked heels or wedges. I would love to be able to wear ballet flats.

Hi Maya,

Yes, I definitely believe flats are just as stylish as heels. However, I think flats add a casual element to most outfits and I only own two pair (black ballet flats and black riding boots). I feel dressier and more put together in heels and wear them to work three out of five days...plus I think they give my butt a visual "lift". Away from work though, I'm in flats and my riding boots almost exclusively. Oh, and my Converse sneakers.

In the summer I wrestle with this question a lot. I prefer to wear flip flops in hot weather, but I'm the first person to admit they look awful on me. Aside from flip flops and my ballet flats, I almost never wear heels in the summer and I'm pretty sure my appearance suffers for it.

Great questions!

I do not appreciate flats on myself at all, so to me and for me, they are not as stylish and polished as heels.
However, I do appreciate flats on others. One of my good friends (Ana) wears flats VERY well. (I know others of you do, but she's the one I see in real life).

Interesting. Lately there has been a surge in posts asking how to wear heels, how can I look stylish in heels, etc. There has always been envy towards women who can wear high heels, and certainly heels won Angie's Team Flats/Team Heels survey. All of this suggests that most YLFers are wearing flats just because they feel they have to, either for comfort or lifestyle reasons. So I think there is a definite strong preference for heels, but most of these answers don't seem to indicate that, which is surprising. I wonder if those who favor heels are just not responding for fear of offending. I hope that's not the case.

For what it's worth, here are my responses:

Do you believe, 100% sincerely, that flats can be just as stylish as heels?

Yes, sometimes more so. I also find heels over 3-4 inches (depending on foot size) unappealing. I just don't like the look of an unnaturally arched foot and impossibly long legs. While it is prized in the fashion industry, to me it just looks like the view in a funhouse mirror. I also think that for all the talk of petites pulling off heels better, I think they can look silly fast if the heel is too high or too narrow--like they are walking on stilts. It doesn't ruin an otherwise killer outfit for me but it isn't my personal preference.

Are heels always better in terms of style (disregarding appropriateness)? Is there ever a time when flats look better than heels, or are heels always preferable regardless of the outfit?

I prefer flats with skinnies and straight leg jeans by far. I don't like the way straight legs can't reach the ground with heels, and I find skinnies imbalanced with most heels. Wide legs and flares (including dress pants) look better with heels, and I would say that aside from long evening gowns, this is the only time where I find heels mandatory.

I also prefer the look of flat boots (not flat as in pancake flat, but up to a 1.5" heel). Agree with April that boots with skinny heels do not excite me.

Finally, I think shorter dresses and skirts look much better with flats, and that is what I usually wear. Short dress and heels looks a little desperate to me (sorry Heidi Klum).

Do you see any purpose to flats other than just being comfortable or better for your lifestyle?

Yes. I feel that heels elongate my already disproportionately long legs, so I seldom wear them. When I do they are under 2". I find this is best for me aesthetically as well as comfort-wise.

I also have a modest style and much prefer to look funky and cute over sexy and sophisticated. I don't care if some people find it juvenile. It is part of my style and I feel 100% confident about it. I have never felt like a little girl because of this.

If you could wear heels comfortably for all of your day to day activities, would you have any use for flats? Would you miss them?

No, I would never wear heels exclusively even if I could. See above.

Do you appreciate outfits with flats on other women even if you don't on yourself, or do you think all women would look better in heels?

It only depends what they're wearing.

What kind of body types, if any, look better in flats? Are there any body types that look better in flats than in heels?

I don't think so. I also don't think larger calves necessarily look better in heels. In fact, I find heels accentuate the calf much more.

I do think smaller feet tend to look better in flats, but that doesn't mean I think large feet look bad in them.

Yes, I think they can and do look as stylish as heels. I think women look good in all sorts of heel heights, but to be frank I'm not as excited by super-high-heeled looks (e.g., on the Sartorialist). It's just not my thing. Re. myself: I like wearing various heel heights, but my regular work shoe/boot rotation all has heels that are between 1.5-2.5" with a solid wedge or chunky heel. Since I have a super-high arch, shoes that are absolutely flat aren't that comfortable for me, unless they are sneakers.

The idea that flats *can* be as stylish as heels is, IMO, true -- but let's admit that it's a whole lot more difficult to achieve. Great-looking flats are not easy to find, at least at this fashion moment, at least at my price point.

It's very hard if you're short to pull off flats with dress pants, especially in the winter when you need some sort of sock. I find flats with dresses and skirts easier, but you have to watch the dowdy factor as well as the "little girl in party shoes" factor.

If I could comfortably wear heels, I would almost always choose them for pants, with the exception of jeans, which look good both ways.

Like others, in boots, I prefer a flat or a modest heel. And I don't like the look of boots with a skinny heel at all.

-Yes, 100% sincerely, flats are just as stylish as heels.
-No, heels are not always better in terms of style.
-There are tons of reasons for flats--cute, comfortable, stylish, walk all day, the ability to run from the zombie apocalypse...
-Even if I could, I wouldn't wear heels everyday
-I absolutely don't think everyone looks better in heels.
-As a fatty I'm willing to kick someone in the shins if they want to tell me the only figure flattering thing to do is to where heels. I don't care, the heels really aren't going to make me magically thinner.

This is my issues with heels--limping isn't cute--no matter how good they look. I know absolutely that many women can walk easily in some towering heels and look great. But I see all these girls heading out to the clubs in their towering stripper platforms and so many of them look in serious pain. Walking barefoot down Hollywood Blvd carrying your shoes is tacky and gross. Nothing really has its own lot so there is always walking involved.

Flats can be just as stylish as heels. It depends on the outfit. More to the point, for me, is that heels signal "dressier" or "more formal" than flats.

I think flats look best on those 5'9" and over. I don't think body type matters as much as height. (I am 5'4".) When I say flats, I really mean flats. Stuff with no heel, or 1/4" heels. Even men don't wear true flats. Their shoes have 1-1.5" heels as well. I tend to wear shoes w/ a 1-2" heel and I like this height.

Even though I don't think true flats (like ballet flats) look good on me, I do wear them, I think they can look OK with cropped pants (pedal pushers or capri length).

I am Captain of Team Flats! I 10000% believe flats are as stylish as heels. And maybe I am nuts, but sometimes I think heels look ridiculous. They can look very odd and forced, especially when the woman can't walk in them! Flats look very smart and classy to me. I have no desire to wear heels...

I think flats can be as stylish as heels, although I think the style achieved is different.

I think certain outfits do look better with flats. 'Flats' encompasses so many types of shoes, as does 'Heel'.

If I could wear heels without discomfort for the entire day I'd wear them more often, but I would still reach for my studded ballet flats, flat boots, flat booties, and oxfords in many cases.

I think proportion is important. I prefer a more fitted pant leg or a shorter skirt with flats.

I am always honest.

Flats are just as stylish as heels - but obviously not for all occasions and outfits which is to Taylor's point.

In some instances flats can look better with an outfit than heels. Oxfords, gladiator sandals and riding boots are great examples. Heels are not always the most stylish choice.

There is something about a dressy flat that conveys a sense of confidant modesty.

There is something about a dressy heel that conveys a sense of authority.

I do like to have the option to wear both flats and low heels daily.

- Yes, I believe that flats can be as stylish as heels. The caveat is that they will look better than heels with some outfits, whereas heels will look better than flats with some outfits.
- No, heels are not always better in terms of style. There are so many stylish flats available. I think that flats look great with many skirt lengths. I also think that they can work well with trousers if the cut and inseam work well with flats.
- Yes, I see flats as an excellent style option, in addition to being comfortable and oftentimes more manageable than heels.
- If I could wear heels comfortably all day, I would still want to have the option of flats for certain styles/inspirations. That said, I have yet to find a flat that doesn't rip my feet to shreds (narrow heel = tons of blisters and even bleeding). I wouldn't miss that part of flats!
- I really like flats on other women. Here in Seattle, many women rock the flats with a great variety of styles. I never look at them and think, "If only she'd worn heels."
- I don't know that flats look better on certain body types as far as shape goes. As for height, I think they are great on petite gals like me who aren't trying to look taller. I also think they are darling on tall women.

What a thought-provoking bunch of questions, Maya. Thank you!
