Beth, that is so heartwarming that you were able to give Caspian a good home!

I've been covertly searching on PetFinder (because B. knows that it is too easy for me to fall in love with a dog, and I really wasn't supposed to be searching when we weren't living in a place where we could adopt one) and researching pet rescue and adoption groups. There are some that require fences, and nearly all purebred breeders and rescue groups do. But we have friends that fostered and then adopted some small dogs when they were living in an apartment a couple years ago through a rescue organization that specializes in removing dogs from kill shelters, and it looks like they only require fences for dogs over 25 lb. For B. and I, our biggest concern is the temperament of our future dog rather than having a specific breed in mind (though I'll admit I always have a soft spots for Shelties and herding dogs - they are more likely to chase you than run away, as they want to keep an eye on "the flock!")
Thanks for sharing your experience.

As much as I've griped about the insane midwestern drought and heatwave, every summer should have a couple of 90 degree days, just to give you an excuse to squeeze lemons for lemonade or make homemade ice cream!

You look fabulous in your outfits here. I love how you wear darker shades in a summery way in #1.

Best wishes on your move and your pet search. We have a shelter dog, Caspian, who has been a joy to us. I used PetFinder, believe it or not, and found our dog on the internet. I searched shelters in the Chicago area and near my folks in Indiana. It was a shelter in a small town in Indiana that gave us our wonderful pooch. They didn't have "fence" or "no small kids" rules, which worked in our favor. Sometimes more agricultural communities are a little more "down home" in their matching practices. They did do a criminal check, and they neutered him the day before we took him home, but mostly we had a chat about our lifestyle and Caspian's temperament and needs.

Hope your settled soon!

Thank you! Yes, I'm certainly excited about the decorating portion. We were able to view a model identical to our unit that was furnished and had a LOT of space; they even had room for a desk and table/chairs in the hallway down to the bedrooms, which was cool.

Shannon, I know - I don't think anyone but us would "get" that! It just takes a while to establish a routine in a new place. Be warned: there may be some dud photos for a while until I figure it out.

Angie, I hate the moving OUT part but love moving in and setting everything up. :)
Isn't it nice to have some genuinely warm weather? Wow!

Christy, while my parents and job are still near "our" Nordstrom, most likely those that I'll be visiting will be on the west side instead. We'll have to make time to meet up!
I've actually never seen the hydroplane races, but they sound fun. This year we have relatives visiting and with the apartment searching and a bridal shower too, didn't have time to scope out the Blue Angels show; however, they flew directly overhead of us in formation when we were coming out of the mall after buying a shower gift. How fun! I always get a rush out of their show.

Rae, I hope so too. We're both very "doggy" people and this is something we've hoped to do for a while.

Kim, I'm glad that it's not quite THAT hot. Anything over 95 is well out of my personal comfort zone! You should have seen us in summer '09 when it broke 100 for about a week - we melted into our homes and many of us bought our first AC units!

Suz, very true. I think it's my way of saying goodbye to the things I have loved and appreciated about this apartment - but realizing that there will be VERY cool benefits to the new one we'll be moving to. Perhaps *gasp* I'm learning to adapt to change a bit better over the years?

Laura, we aren't really set on one breed. One complication is that since we don't have a fenced in yard, most breeders and many rescue organizations would not allow us to adopt from them. B. and I would like a dog that is smart and trainable, playful and able to go for long walks or jogs, but not overly hyper or barky. I grew up with two family Shelties that were VERY mellow, quiet, and very responsive to training. Since we'll both most likely be working, we probably would look at adopting a young adult rather than starting with a puppy. It just really depends on the situation that we're in. I'm hoping to change jobs and locations so hopefully will end up working withing close distance of where we'll live.

That's very exciting that you and your family are thinking of adding a dog, too! What breeds are you looking at?

Yay for summer finally arriving!! We took full advantage of it yesterday by heading down to Seafair to watch the hydroplane races and see the Blue Angels. It was HOT - but it felt so good! :)

Love both of these outfits Kari - especially the first!

Thanks, Scarlet. Yes, it's good to take that step! B. and I have been wanting to move for a few months but really hadn't found the right place until today, and when we did we decided to act immediately.

(Part of the reason we decided to hold off on other plans: our current place isn't dog-friendly, and RE: professional changes, I definitely didn't want to be unemployed while searching and applying for an apartment.)

Although moving is a major Pain In The Derriere (especially packing up and cleaning out our current place!), I'm looking forward to moving in and making the new place ours. We need a fresh start, a breath of fresh air.

Thank you Vicki.

Mmm, I enjoyed many a glass of refreshing lemonade and iced tea today to quench my thirst! I love thinking of the ikat dress as my "lemonade dress" - thanks for the visual!

I'm going to miss the porch setting too, but the new place has potential. First of all, the new porch will be double the size of my old one (which was a little 8x8 square - in these photos, my camera is perched at the end of one diagonal, and I'm standing at the opposite corner.) I might have more room to maneuver. I'll certainly have room to add some potted plants. And if I get brave enough, you might even see some courtyard shots with a tripod. We'll see!

(Even in the current unit, though, I can only take porch pictures in spring and summer - I take my photos before leaving for work, and during the fall/winter it doesn't get light outside until after I'm out of the house. So the porch pictures would have been limited anyway.)

You look amazing in the heat and I love the silk blouse and pendant with your bermudas. Your ikat dress is lovely for this type of weather and you radiate loveliness and look refreshing, like a cool glass of lemonade.

I am so going to miss your porch photos, because you always show superb style in that place and because of the lighting, the greenery, and familiarity with it, but I know you will create a new photography space that will allow us to enjoy more "Kari style" in your urban setting. How exciting that you can add a new family member to the mix. Then, we'll be able to see the little canine addition. Wishing you the very best.

I'm not sure that the photos convey just how HOT it was today. And no, that's not a complaint! It sure took its sweet time getting here, but Seattle is officially in the midst of summer. It was in the mid 90s today and will be again tomorrow, which is *typically* the hottest that it gets here. And 0% chance of rain according to the weather forecast, which feels REALLY odd. There's a nice breeze as it is cooling down, but the sun won't be totally down for a couple hours.

So I'm enjoying the weather by spending the evening happily curled up on my porch. It's a little bittersweet. Just this morning B. and I found an apartment that we're *very* excited about - it met nearly all of our "wish list" items - so in a few weeks, we're planning to move. For the first time in both of our lives, we'll actually be living within the city limits and in a more urban area - a far commute from my current job, but close to our friends and in a neighborhood that we're familiar and comfortable with. Best of all, the place is very dog friendly. We'll be facing into a gorgeous landscaped courtyard where we saw many residents walking and playing with their pets while touring the unit, and there are some parks within a block or two that we can visit as well. B. and I want to wait and see how my employment situation shakes out, and I had wanted to move before making any changes, but we're hoping to make a canine addition to our family within the next year.

I'm thrilled about our new place and the prospect of having a dog, but I'll also miss our current apartment. The place we've lived for the past year plus is mere blocks away from a great paved trail, and relatively private for an apartment unit as most of our living room windows face out to a beautiful, tree-covered stormwater drainage creek. There are some small features that are kind of charming that I'll miss (such as the cute archway in the ceiling over our dining room table.) Once we move we'll be down one bathroom and will not have a washer-dryer in our unit (which was the one thing that was on my wish list that we gave up due to the amount of space, location, and price that the new place provides.) But the bottom line is that we both feel like we can really see ourselves making a new home in the place that we're planning to move to, we want the option of bringing a pet into our lives, and we're excited about the change.

So we'll have a few more outfit photos taken on my back porch, and we'll see how long it takes me to find a new "photo station" after we move. And how long it takes before I get "caught in the act" by my new neighbors!

#1-3: Black Karen Kane bermudas; Classiques Entier patterned silk blouse from NAS (similar to this houndstooth patterned one); chartreuse stone pendant on a double cord with purple beads, a hand-me-down from my mom (I adored it on her but she said she just didn't have anything that she could wear it with); black sequin Second Base camisole; bone patent strappy wedge Clarks sandals.

#4-5: Tahari Yellow and gray ikat faux-wrap dress; yellow Second Base camisole; pewter low wedge Clarks gladiators; purple beaded disc necklace from a farmer's market a couple years back.
