Your kind words mean a lot. I'm so glad we have Lucy still to cuddle and love so that our home isn't devoid of pets. It's hard as is losing both rats this year and having our cage empty of tiny critters. I am grieving much harder than I expected given that we knew we'd have to make this choice with Blinkin back in December when her first tumor was detected. Boo's illness came out of nowhere but that was months ago. Not right away, but there is a rescue organization and a couple breeders that we have met at fancy rat shows (yes, like dog shows!) that we are interested in working with. The breeders really try to bring in a healthier genetic pool (due to many factors rats have delicate respiratory systems and awful cancerous and benign tumors.) The rescue often takes in young rats/oops litters as well as seniors, and they will spay the rats for a MUCH more reasonable fee than vets in the area. Both Blinkin and Boo could have possibly avoided their health problems had they been spayed at a young age, but at a cost of $400/rat, we just couldn't swing it. The rescue charges less than 1/4 of that for surgery PLUS adoption. It's hit me surprisingly hard given how much time we've had to prepare for it. Losing them both is a double whammy. They were our first fur babies and taught us SO much.<br /> They truly left little paw prints on my heart. Actually, our vet makes memorial paw prints in clay. We had a set done for Boo and will pick up Blinkin's in a week. Since December, Blinkin has developed multiple tumors, the first of which started very deep and encompassed much of her lower abdomen/hips. However, she remained active, social, and pain free until the last day. Last afternoon she suddenly developed complications from what was probably a uterine tumor, and we agreed it was time to bring her to the vet so that she could pass with minimal suffering. We spent a lot of time holding her before letting her go peacefully.<br /> My heart is hurting. We loved our small critters so; they truly brought us together as a team. Losing them both feels very final, and while I don't have the heart to clear out the cage today, it is sad to have it stand empty of critters.<br /> In 2 years they latched on to our hearts big time. I'm not at all exaggerating that Boo and Blinkin are a HUGE part of our deciding to get a dog, get married, and generally build a life/family together. They helped us be a great team and see sides of each other that hadn't come out before.<br /> I also know we gave them pretty amazing lives, short as they may be. Today was a gorgeous and sunny day, and on so many days like this 2 years ago, when they were sleepy babies, I'd sit on the porch with the rats napping on my lap or inside my clothing. I know we'll have more rats down the line, but we will miss Boo and Blinkin greatly. </p>
