I'm in the midwinter blues! Not midwinter in terms of temperature (it's only been cold since June started), but in terms of light! Am glad that the days will start getting longer very soon, as I find that lifts my spirits.

I'm usually an early waker, but midwinter I just want to stay in bed and am sleepy and tired (and I realise that the actual temps are closer to what some of you have in summer but it is still a change for those of us in Aus, as our summers are so hot).

I'm eating SO much (and do every June). Can't seem to stop myself. I'm with staysfit on winter weight gain (which in Australia, is NOT connected to holiday celebrations. For me it is all about the climate.)

Sterling, interestingly, humid summer weather is the only weather in which I have lost my usually large appetite - when I lived in Japan. Mind you, I'm not sure we had any icecream there! While I both put on and lost weight living there (was the lightest as an adult ever, at one point) the lack of western desserts was a helpful factor!

Back to the present. Exercise was going pretty well - did my best 5km time for the year recently, kept up at the gym and have joined a running group do a very intensive intervals session. Sadly the last one of these has hurt my knee a bit (a recurrent problem) so I'm cutting back in the short term.

Back from 10-day conference/vacation trip and relieved that I only gained 5 pounds despite eating lots of food I don't normally eat and drinking more wine than usual. I did drop 1 pound today.

I worried about my feet, and so took 4 pairs of shoes. One pair for conference, a pair of Clark's sandals, New Balance walking shoes, and a pair of Sketchers that turned out to be comfortable for the plane trip and just relaxing. I changed shoes every day and was so happy that my feet did well despite heat, humidity, and walking 5-6 miles per day according to DH's Fitbit. Great relief--I have lots of foot problems but did great on the trip. I also found that I had a lot more energy despite the heat, humidity, and rain.

No sunburn either. DH and I used up a tube of sunscreen--surprised to learn that some of those in our group never use sunscreen and don't burn despite being fair. DH and I have our annual dermatologist visit next week, so motivated to give her a good report. Normally one Neutrogena lasts me the whole summer.

Arthritis in knee minimal problem--only noticed it until several days in.

I've fretted and worried about holding up this trip, but overall pleased that my preparation paid off. Now I'm easing into my usual routine.

Also, with my presentation now over with, I expect to be less stressed in the next few weeks.

I had a good May and June is going well.

I reset my moderate levels for wine and for "treats" and increased my exercise. What did I learn?

- Refined sugar is trouble for me - and I am losing my taste for it. I still eat some but I have cut back significantly.
- Whilst the quantity I was drinking was not large - it was a pattern/habit.
- Small changes make a difference - my waist and bra area feel less fluffy and my clothes and bras are fitting better.
- increasing the exercise (from 4 workouts a week to 5-6) is working but I tiring. It is a real mix of things - walking, running, gym, HIT. i have been to four yoga classes in 5 weeks and want to make this more regular.

Unfrumped brought up a point I had not considered. Stress. Our work year-end is September 30th. There is an extraordinary push to get things done by September 30th. I sometimes feel the work suffers because of the deadline and that adds a lot of stress. Perhaps my addiction to TV and ice cream at this time of year is more a reflection of stress than to summer heat.

I hadn't made the connection until just this moment.

Due to vacations, we have been shorter- staffed at work, with more stress and longer hours. I found I was not getting in as much steps and stairs. Part of that is more stress- and organizational strategy-related than actual “no time” - but it showed me I need to be more mindful with smaller chunks- do some -5- min walks instead of 10, and log it in manually. Fitbit is set to “ accept “ only 10-minutes + for automatic recording , but hey, I’m the boss. Also it appears easier to just feel those bits of time aren’t there when things are hopping, but really, they’re there, just may present themselves differently or are easier to lose sight of and waste.

Also, my own travel times are hard. Even on “ vacation, I find it hard to do my own exercise- thing, if it’s not built into the day( such as a sight-seeing walk.). I’m not habituated to cranking out early to the motel fitness center, for example, to get in exercise before we get into the cycle of waiting around , meeting up, hanging out with family.

WOW, you have me put to shame. The absolute thought of doing anything in the heat have sidelined me. I have taken to watching extraordinarily amounts of television while eating Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Both of these activities have a direct and immediate mood effect. So I have also been fighting minor depression.

June 16th: I threw out all the Ben and Jerry's. It was harder than I thought it would be. Now I start a refined-sugar detox. It usually takes me about five full days before I feel "normal" and the cravings subside.

I got up and did one lap around the lake at dawn. One lap is not something to write home about, but I showed up at dawn!

I resume counting Weight Watchers points. Yes. It is kinda hard to count points when your dinner is a pint of ice cream with Wolf Blitzer.

Thank you for posting this thread. You are inspirational in ways you can never know. Best wishes.

Totally agree on the no good deed theory.

I have been sampling some classes and different equipment at the medical fitness centre I work for, and am really liking working out on the Gravity machine (exactly like a Pilates reformer but with incline options) . Such a fantastic and intense workout - especially for the core. I am bemoaning my lack of time and energy for exercise in general though, and the sad irony of working at this facility is how little I am working out right now. I'm hoping it's a temporary energy drop.

I am impressed GF. I have been going to Yoga about 4 or 5 times a week. I try to walk as much as I can. I would like to increase my walking but something always gets in the way (injured dog, my feet issues, etc.). I have been working on feeling grateful for my health. Some of our friends have had some very serious health issues.

Totally bummed- while helping a friend I wrenched my knee. As I write this I am sitting with my knee ( swollen like a balloon) elevated with ice. So much for getting my exercise in.
Once again- no good deed goes unpunished.

Your squat weights are impressive pregnant or not! I'm in the final cycle of a Smolev squat program. Looking forward to it being over. Just finished a fitness challenge at the gym and that's a relief too. It wasn't very structured but we took measurements, weight and did a fitness test to measure progress. It was only three months but I was pretty diligent about watching what I ate and it was a good exercise on portion control and quality of food. I'm not counting macros (or calories) for a few weeks and I'm hoping that I'll be able to maintain without having to log everything I eat for the rest of my life. Lol.

We’ve nearly reached the midpoint of the month. How is everybody doing on the health front?

I’m still plugging away at cardio, but the past few days have felt more tiring than usual, partly because of insomnia. I love the long days, but tend to wake up at the crack of dawn in the summer, regardless of how I’ve slept.

On the weightlifting front: my only goal during pregnancy was to do what I could and what was comfortable, but to try and continue squatting. Pelvic issues have made it challenging, but I’m pleased to have reached (early) full term being able to do squat triples at 175lb and 185lb, and singles at 190-205lb. Contra conventional wisdom, I tend to squat after long cardio sessions, and work through my sets fairly quickly. This keeps my expectations very low, and fatigue is a good antidote to any ego that might arise with trying to hit a particular number, rather than going with the flow. Ironically, it’s much more uncomfortable for me to squat to the ground without any weight, than it is to squat to parallel with a belly and 200lb. Whatever I pulled is content remaining pulled, but at least it’s stabilized. Otherwise, I have felt really greatful for my health these past few months.
