Ladies! Anemia isn't something to take lightly! Being fair (a red head) I'm prone to low iron, and during the off season from my sport I'm a blood donor.

Running, and other high impact sports can contribute to iron deficiency, as can what you eat. Did you know high dairy diets impede iron absorption, while vitamin C helps iron absorption? I was high dairy, and I've cut it down a bit. I also throw some spinach in my salads, along with oranges and strawberries or pomegranate. A daily multi for active types helps also.

Yesterday my iron was at 165!

Note to 50+ ladies. Beware vitamins marketed for women 50+. They often don't have iron, with the assumption that you aren't having your period (ie monthly blood loss) so don't need the iron. Well, if grandma is still sending you roses, you need your iron!

This is a tiny victory, but I have taken my iron supplement every day since Saturday. I started a new liquid supplement to take in addition to the horse pill, and it has no taste, and no side effects. My iron is almost as low as it gets before transfusion, and I'm a runner with a half marathon coming in 2 weeks. If I'm faithful on the iron, the hills won't kill me, but it's going to take 2 weeks of double up supplements to get me there I think. This morning was the first time in forever I have gotten up and didn't feel like I only laid down 30 minutes prior....so perhaps this new one DOES have better absorption than my other. We shall see.

I also ran 8 miles on Saturday and did TRX on Sunday. Once I get my reflective gear in order, I can do some evening runs on the main street. Setting a new goal of working out 3x per week and cutting out bagels on my way back to full paleo.

ETA: Anne - the anemia is most certainly a reason to not do anything, it really knocks you on your butt! I've had months where the stairs in the house left me out of breath with a super high heart rate and I had to sit down and take a real breather. It's no joke. I've just become used to it and have forgotten what it's like to feel NORMAL, but I'm tired of telling people "I need to run slow because I can't breath...no, I'm not out of shape, my oxygen doesn't circulate to my lungs basically because of low iron". I am trying to fix this, since I'm the lazy pill taker, I just need to make a conscious effort.

I worked 6 days straight on my feet. At the end of 8 (plus) hours on my feet x 6 days I am so exhausted. So today that I took a "nap" at 9 am --actually I only got up to feed my boyfriend's dog -- and slept until 2 pm.

My weight seems to stay at the same place, I think. I don't have a scale. I am really trying to watch the saturated fat thing to lower my cholesterol. I did find a non-dairy creamer that has no saturated fat, so that is good. I have switched to eating 3-4 salmon burgers a week (rather than fried chicken nuggets or strips) so I think that's really good for me, and I have 10 french fries every other day, rather than a basket every day. Also I am on a kick of eating a big bowl of oatmeal several times a week, with nuts from our walnut tree and raisins or cranberries. It really sticks to me and makes it easier to avoid said french fries. I am actually a little surprised that, having made some healthy changes, the weight doesn't go down. Obviously I need to make more dramatic moves to shave off 5 lbs. which I have wanted to do for, oh, 2 years or so.

Slowly getting my exercise mojo back after a month of vacation. Funny thing is DH and I both lost weight, and it has stayed off for 3 weeks now! I have broken 2 bad habits too...first is waking up to eat in the PM (haven't done that since Labour Day) and have managed to reduce coffee consumption to 1-2 cups in the am, and nothing after noon. The reflux that was bothering me has abated, so I am motivated to stick with the good habits.

No longer sore after weight training, and swim times are coming down, though still a little slower than where they were when coach let us go for the summer.
Haven't resumed the weekly sessions with evil personal trainer Kevin, yet. Saving that for November!

VC, all the best with your mum... I am sure you are right about the outdoors and walking.

As for me, I have now been diagnosed with anaemia. I am booked to have an iron infusion in about 6 weeks. I don't know if I am using this as an excuse, but I actually felt too tired to even contemplate exercise on the weekend, even my usual jog with lots of walking, that I do with the girls. I felt I had left DD10 down.

Eating is not going amazingly well. Lots of celebratory meals on the weekend!

Last week went okay. My workout schedule was a bit off I had to work overnight Tuesday/Wednesday. What I did:

Monday AM: Run
Thursday AM: Run
Friday PM: Yoga
Saturday AM: Run

None of last weeks runs went particularly well (slower and shorter than I'd like), but I am giving myself full credit for going out the morning after both cooking (for 11!) and consuming Canadian thanksgiving dinner last Sunday.

This week my goals are:

Monday AM: Run (check!), PM Yoga (Video at home)
Wednesday AM: Run, PM Yoga (Studio after work)
Friday AM: Run, PM Yoga (Studio after work)

Plus walking my dog each evening when I get home. I am also back in to my meal planning routine after destroying thanksgiving leftovers.

Has anybody tried Barre? There is a groupon in my area I am thinking of giving a go...

May I join you please? I have been meaning to try something new and I just completed my first kettlebell workout using a youtube video. I bought my 7 pounder months ago (and always thought it was called kettleball--haha) and hadn't taken it out of the box.

My goal is to add some long walks to my weekly routine and to not eat so many Trader Joe's new Fall treats--pumpkin toaster pastries are a downfall.

Good morning everyone. I have 11 weeks until my trip to Costa Rica, New Years. My goal is to lost 5-10 lbs. I weighed in yesterday after 4 weeks and was up only .4 lbs. Yay for me!

Last week was a mixed bag. Birthday celebrations for my sister and a weekend in Austin with my husband and stepsons didn't do my diet any favors, and my exercise routine was thrown off by travel and my sister's visit, but I'll get back on track eventually. This weekend was pretty awful for any kind of exercise -- two long days at the studio left me exhausted by the time I went home, and it's dark by then anyway.

I'm heading out for a little three mile run/walk in just a few minutes, and I'll be sure to get in an hour's workout every day this week until Friday. Next weekend will surely be plenty of walking as I'll be at Shoptoberfest, but also plenty of eating and drinking. In the meantime, it's salad for me!

I had a pretty good week last week for exercise. I hit my target for steps by day 6. I haven't been weighing because I think it is not good for me psychologically. If I do well, I give myself a treat. If I don't do well, I eat to console. lose/lose situation.

This week I am going to try to be a bit stricter with the food and be more consistent with walking. It has turned cold so no more lunch walks and I find I need to do close to 1.5 hours walking on the treadmill to hit my target even though I set it at 3.8-4 mph.

Good luck everyone.

My goal for this week is to get my Mom (who is facing chemo as of this coming Friday) to go on a walk first thing every single morning. Just throw on your clothes and go. I think that walking, even a little bit, will help mitigate chemo fatigue, and I'm hoping that by walking with her, and holding her hand along the way - it'll stick.

It seems small, but I am willing to bet it'll make a big difference - just getting outside and walking even just a little bit will go a long way toward healing and feeling better.

The idea is that we'll throw on our yoga clothes (even though we don't actually 'do' yoga) and head on out the door for a nice walk first thing in the morning. The rest of the jam-packed day can wait - get the walk in first, is what I'm thinking.

I successfully took fish oil and multivitamins every day this week. And I bought a pair of cross-training shoes so that I can add a run/walk to my exercise routine (which is currently 30 minutes a day). I'm having a hard time getting motivated to actually go running or walking though.

New habits for this week are to find some time during the day where a run/walk doesn't feel intrusive on my schedule, and to substitute veggies for sweet snacks (which I did quite well on last week until my hubby baked a pan of brownies and left them out on the counter for me...)

K, my son is a Zen Buddhist, and he has a great little analogy that he busted out one time when I complained about my darned busy busy mind while meditating: He said "Think of your mind like a bicycle upside down with its wheels in the air. Your thoughts are the wheels. In meditation, the goal is to have the wheels perfectly still. But the reality is that from time to time the wind is going to blow, gently or a little harder, and make the wheels spin. Don't worry about the wind. Let it blow on through. Just don't grab the wheels and spin them yourself!" :) I love that picture and it's really helped me.

I did three sessions with Trainer Dave this week and on the one hand it was great, but on the other hand I can see it's going to be quite a while before I'm back where I was pre-surgery. Patience. Gah. Not one of my best qualities! Rumor has it there's a gym in my apartment building, so this week my goal is to find it and put in some treadmill or recumbent bike time between trainer sessions.

My tap class fell through because the friend who was going to do it with me (it was really a semi-private lesson with just the two of us) flaked out. I was disappointed but honestly not all that surprised. There's another friend who was doing it with us and she will be available again after the first of the year, so I guess I'll just wait until then.

Food was better. Scale still bouncing around in the 122 range. At some point I will buckle down but I'm not necessarily feeling it right at this exact moment. I think I still have some swelling that is keeping the number a little artificially inflated.

And finally, I went to a charity fundraiser at a bowling alley last night and bowled two games and lived to tell the tale! Don't know if my surgeon would approve, but I had a blast!

Wow, this turned into a novel! Sorry! Have a good week, everyone!

ETA: Mo, has your BF been to a neurologist? Life is too short to suffer like that, and my neurologist changed my life in a matter of weeks!!

glad to hear the headaches are better. My BF is still getting them pretty much every day. Feel so bad for you both.

My week went okay. I ran twice, got on the bike twice for short errands, and walked twice. But I'm stuck in neutral on the scale. Guess I need to get in that strength training I keep talking about.

Started this week with a run this morning. Might go out to eat this afternoon, so will have to watch portions. Guess my biggest goal for the week is to do that strength stuff. Yoga ideally.

Hi everyone! How was your week?

Mine went pretty well. My headaches are getting better, I think. When I get one, I can usually figure out why I have it and they aren't everyday anymore, And I haven't had a migraine in a couple of months!

My goals for this week are to try to mediate daily (that one has been the hardest to do). I also think I want to find a fitbit so I can log my steps. It'd be a lot easier to hold myself accountable when I have numbers I can see. I'm also going to try to drink more water at work. I've been so busy the past few days at work that I haven't noticed that I haven't been drinking enough.

What are your goals for the week?
