all the best with the marathon training Raisin.

Laurinda, it was an interesting article. When I was reading I felt that it was true for many people, but not for me. I just don't like potato chips or a lot of snack food. There is some ingredient in it (don't know what) that puts me off, and always has.

That said, I fall off the healthy eating wagon for other reasons! Mostly plain starchy food or home baking, which caused me to overindulge a little yesterday.

I didn't make my exercise goals this week, but did get in 2 spin classes and a pump class before having to take a break with exhaustion. The 3 classes meant getting up at 5:30am as I had either work or sick kids at home (so couldn't go to day classes) after a late night and by thurs I was falling asleep at my desk and by Fri (despite 10 hours sleep)I was starting the cold that I presume the kids had. So just taking it easy for the moment.

Thanks Diane! It looks very interesting, I will read through it tonight when the kids are in bed. I think it is just as important to know when to pull back, since overtraining can be a real drain. Hopefully she has some good info!

Hi all I don't normally chime in on this thread but I read about Raison doing a marathon and I wondered Raison if you had ever looked at this blog : http://whatiwore2day.blogspot......y%20sunday
If you look through all the Sporty Sunday posts she talks about training for marathons and when to step it up or when to pull back and about diet before etc I'm not a runner but I think she talks a lot of sense, she certainly seems very dedicated. I think she has run a few marathons. Hope this is of some help.

It's my cousins birthday that day too! I will have to run it for you guys! Yah I was able to run 5 days per week for the half, but now I am running half marathons as my training runs it's just too much, especially with the kids and house work duties, lol. I'm running better doing less days, so I guess there is some truth to it when they say you can overtrain.

Just so happens to be my birthday Good luck!
And, yes, cutting down to 3 or 4 days a week sounds like a good idea. Honestly, when I did my half, I only ran 3 times a week during training.

Mo the marathon is May 12th. So I'm halfway through my training now. Now that the miles are up so high I've had to drop down from running 5 days per week to 3-4. It's just too hard to recover. But as long as I get my long run in and it goes well, I know I'm on track. Honestly, when this is over, I think my running career will take a long break!

Way to go on 14 miles Rae!! I've only ever done a half, and I know how tiring that is on your body. When is your marathon? I am so wimpy lately it's all I can do to plan a 10K this fall lol.

Very interesting article Laurinda! It amazes me the amount of science that goes into making people hooked on junk food. It seems that a lot of the scientists that worked for the big companies later changed their mind and started doing some good though. A bit horrifying to think about how much crap goes in our body. Makes me even more happy we are doing well on Paleo here.

Have my 14 mile run tomorrow which will be my longest distance ever! It's getting harder and harder to keep up with these runs each week.

I have been home recuperating which gives me the opportunity to watch Dr. Oz. He had an author on last week to discuss his book on what he considered to be unethical practices within the food industry. He claims that the industry deliberately makes the foods "crave-able". He discussed the perfect combination of fat, salt, and sugar to ensure that people don't stop eating the product. Dr. Oz showed the scan of a drug addict before and after seeing cocaine and a similar before and after relating to food and the changes in the brain were similar. It really resonated with me as I have been having a lot of trouble with sugar cravings the last few years.

This week there was a show with Dr. Hymen who wrote the book "The Blood Sugar Solution". I bought the book online this morning.

I plan to start walking on the treadmill this afternoon (slowly) and as soon as I have the surgeon's approval, I plan to take in a barre class once a week, a hot yoga class once a week, and start doing short weight sessions in the morning before I get ready for work.

I have been cutting out most processed foods and have managed to get through this week without giving in to the ice cream craving. If I last a week, I am okay for a while.

I'm a little nervous to read the article. I read an few month old reader's digest article about fat and that kindda scared me.

As soon I can get my migraine back under control and gone, I'll try to get back to my normal exercise routine.

I will check out that article. I've been both tired and hungry the last 2 days at work. Not sure what that's about. I normally only eat at work maybe once a week and I've already had a sandwich 2 of my 3 shifts so far. But no potato chips - subbed them with salads. Still a couple of glasses of wine at night. Ahh, maybe I'm just in the winter doldrums and waiting for a burst of spring to refresh me!
As for workouts, I know enough to not expect any extra curricular activity from myself on work days. But hey, wrestling a box of soda syrup (40+ lbs) from the floor, lugging it up a flight of stairs, and shoving it with all your might into the tiny crevice available under the bar in the back corner at an angle isn't a cake walk either.
I did run last week and did strength moves randomly. This week I plan to bowl (snow precludes a run) and again do planks and push ups.

I'm changing my yoga class to a restorative one this week as I'm feeling tired. Other than that it's x3 Pilaties classes. It's hot here again so lots of salads which is good.

How is everyone doing? I accidentally went to a class I thought was beyond my abilities, but chose low weights and gave it a try. I survived! But also realized I am a lot happier with all out effort for 30 minutes rather than hard effort for an hour.

Did anyone see this NY Times Magazine Article?
