Me too Ceit. Well they say I should be 125.5lbs. Which is funny because the other one I found says I'm barely in optimal running weight. Oh well, I run and I weigh whatever I weigh, that's it!

Those calculations say that I need to gain 10lbs to reach my optimum running weight. Ha!

Well. My exercise plans have been totally derailed by a truly brutal stomach bug that hit me HARD beginning Wednesday morning. The good news is that my weight is lower than it's been in more than a year -- I saw 119.4 on the scale this morning! LOL Hopefully I can stay below 120 even after I'm back to normal. But man, I wouldn't recommend this "diet" to my worst enemy!!

Ok Raisin,

I have checked out the article (citation Runners World (Australia) March 13 2013). It is in metric :-)

Step 1
Start with 45kg for the first 150cm then add 1.0 kg for each additional centimeter to establish baseline weight

Step 2
determine your frame by wrist size (for women - I didn't copy details from me)
Height less than 157cm
Small= less than 14cm
Med= 15.2-15.9
Large = 15.9

Height 157-165 cm
Small = less than 15.2cm
Med = 15.2-15.9cm
Large = 15.9+

Height 165+
small=15.9+
med=15.9-16.5
large=16.5+

Step 3
for small frame subtract 4.5kg
for med frame use the baseline weight
for large frame add 4.5kg

So for me (small framed, by that reckoning)that would give me 53.5 kg or about 117 pounds. That is about a BMI of 20, so isn't actually below the BMI healthy range. I don't know it that means that someone like you Raisin should gain weight to get your healthy running weight! (since you are taller)

I know that there seems to be a general principle that it is better to be lighter to run faster, and I am tempted to try the idea because it is only 1 kg or so less than my weight and I would love to break 1 hr for 10km. But of course many, many people far heavier than me are much much faster! I am a bit sceptical about the idea.

I have seen other "ideal running weights" which are much more stringent than this article and clearly into underweight territory, which is pretty hard if you are not naturally built that way.

I don't normally post on this thread, but I thought I'd join in this time. I started to exercise more regularly around this time last year and I have actually stuck at it. I sometimes miss the odd workout but mostly I do manage once a week now which in my mind is better than none at all. My husband who has regularly trained with weights since 17, has a load of training equipment like a bench, free wieghts, squat bar, bench bar, dumbells etc. He showed me how to bench press and squat and now my routine is: cardio warm-up while holding small weights, followed by exercise bike, followed by bench press and hip-belt squats. I finish with a short cool down and I'm done in about 45mins. I used to do 3 times a week but as I started to lift more weight I now do 1 or 2. Lately I am also being more careful about diet to help menopause symptoms.. and thats me, lets hope I keep it up now.

Yah I think you're right Anne, it s a bit lower. I found something that said at my height (5'5.5") ideal weight is 120-133lbs, but ideal weight for a runner is 111-117lbs. I just squeezed in there at 117lbs, but I can't imagine losing more....or trying to while running. I'd be starving!

Yes it is more complicated and more on the skinny side than say BMI (I am a bit sceptical really!) Some formula which I can't quite recall ( I read it at the library but it is in the current issue so I can't borrow it!) I'll get back to you on that
I also have no time for exercise this week. Well I got one run in so far, but I seem to have some sort of stomach bug that the baby has, which has left me with no desire to run. I may only miss one though, since I'm doing them 3x per week now. Hoping to just skip today and do my long run either Friday or Saturday. Gosh, I think I'll be happy when this marathon is over!

Anne, how does Runner's world calculate an ideal running weight? Is it different then ideal weight in general?

I have managed a short run, a spin class and a pump class so far this week. And surprisingly the scales this morning showed that I am now at the bottom of my "range" I have been watching my eating, but not excessively. I am not too excited though, it may not stay there!I would like to lose another 1kg/2 pounds to get to what Runner's world says is my ideal running weight, but we'll see.
Work has, once again, been my exercise this last week. I am utterly bushed and expect to do absolutely NOTHING tomorrow. Perhaps a run sometime over the next few days off.

Oh yeah MaryK, I am so familiar with the divorce diet, I lost 12 kg that way, got em back though, with my better mood, so watch for that!

I thought I should try to join this regular thread since I am actually in weight loss mode right now. I ski-ed cross country M, T, F, S, Sun last week and then rode horses (including mucking and brushing) on W and T. So officially only 2 days of no ativity in the last 10 days. I am being really good on my calories and have even been able to make room for a cookie or muffin at breakfast coffee because of all the exercise. My teen daughters bake alot!

I am hoping to lose another 1 kg in the next 2 weeks. I have lost 4 since I started in January. Seems a good pace.

Wow! Snow! Crazy!!

I haven't been posting on this thread but I am keeping up with my program. I have to tell you -- the marital separation diet is doing wonders for the number on the scale! ;) I actually keep forgetting to eat, which is utterly unprecedented. I'm trying to get my protein in and eat reasonably healthy but I'll admit it's a bit of a challenge.

I am on my regular exercise schedule. I had a session with Trainer Dave yesterday and went to boot camp class this morning. No tap class this week because our teacher is on vacation, but I have three more boot camps and another trainer session planned so it's all good.

Sorry about the delay in the weekly post, air travel has thrown me for a loop! I enjoyed sunny and 70F (20C) on Sunday, then arrived home to a snowstorm yesterday.

How is everyone doing this week? I got beach walks and hiking in last week, but will be back to gym workouts back in Wisconsin. I was able to keep very close to my Way Of Eating (not 'diet'), it seems more people on the US West Coast are cutting out starches or wheat or gluten (and sugars) and there were lots of options at restaurants and cafes.
