Sure - come on by :)

That bacon butter sounds amazing...whoa. I'll have to try it some time on a roasting chicken first before I try it on a whole turkey (I'm not a naturally good cook, and sometimes ruin recipes on the first try). Definitely filing this one away for future reference rae.

I agree velvetychocolate's dinner sounds delicious and healthy.

I will be cooking for 14 at Xmas and I always fall off the food wagon over the hols, stress, laziness? Hubs family is keen for walks or runs but my family takes leaving the house for exercise over holidays as an insult

A few days of eating, visiting and not moving makes me round and miserable

I am still keeping up with the exercise (for the most part -- skipped yesterday and the gym is closed Friday), but the food thing is out. of. control. Ugh.

For the inquiring minds, the bacon butter is super easy:

1/2 lb. butter, 1/2 lb. bacon, herbs (sage, thyme, rosemary, and a dash of cumin is what I used) all go into food processor and get blended into something vaguely resembling salmon shmear. I'm supposed to stuff it under the turkey skin before roasting.

Here is the whole recipe for the Turkey in a Bacon Blanket:

I'm debating whether I'm going to go to cycling today or get started on pie baking.
Tomorrow hubby and I will hopefully go for a bike ride and then I plan to eat whatever I want and enjoy good wine. Then Friday I will step on the scale and blame my husband for the damage done :-)
I honestly don't worry about one day. It's not like my stomach will be able to hold a ton of food anyway. Granted, the calorie count will be up there.....

I figure if I can maintain or lose a pound or 2 between now and new years, I'm doing well. I'm only a few pounds up from my goal weight at this point.

Looks like we all have our hurdles! Mine has been the empty calories from wine. Today I'd like to go for a nice run. Although we won't be cooking a meal here (no family in town) we might go to eat a restaurant version. It would feel good to break a sweat today.

Anya - you're right, a little bit of dark chocolate is a reasonably healthy indulgence once in awhile. I've chosen to have chocolate very occasionally throughout my journey, but I do find that since I'm a serious chocolate person, sometimes it's better if I don't have it around.

In the meantime, I've been extremely lax in the exercise dept. for quite some time. Must fix that soon. Just have to work up the gumption to join a local gym, or set up a home routine. I've moved to a new state, and don't know anyone here.

Mo - glad you posted this about the holidays - it helps knowing that others also have to work through it. Just reading through the replies, I can see that just because I don't have someone to go to the gym with isn't a good reason not to exercise. Woo hoo! I'm just now newly determined to at least come up with a starting plan on that front. Thanks!

Thursday will be a tempting day for me as the hubby and I will be eating at both my mother's and his mother's home. While I love these dear ladies to death, healthy cooking is not in their vocabularies when it comes to Thanksgiving. My game plan is to eat a larger portion of the lean protein (turkey breast), a small serving of stuffing, and then fill the remainder of my plate with the vegetable sides that I am preparing (roasted cauliflower, balsamic glazed brussels sprouts). I am not planning on having dessert as sweet treats are trigger foods for me. But if I feel declining the desserts will hurt feelings, I plan on sharing a small piece with my husband.

We are also planning on taking a hike with our daughter in the morning before the meals. I am also going to encourage the family to strike up a game of tag in the yard afterwards.

Hopefully, the extra activity will burn off some calories.

velvetychocolate, I think dark 70% chocolate is allowed in paleo-ish/low-carb-ish/low-gi-ish lifestyles? I eat low gi diet ( kinda Mediterranean and French food). And I always have 1 tablet of dark in my fridge. I eat a shard a day, or every two days, or a small piece every week, especially in the holiday season. That makes me feel a lot better.
While I don't celebrate thanks-giving where I live, i battle the same exercise/diet problems on Christmas. My approach is - min 2 days of ski in a 5 period of family gathering. Ping-pong-ing with family and friends! Doing some sort of movement like decorating , climbing up and down for ornaments. And going shopping for the dinners. I use public transport, so walk, and buy fresh bread in the mornings, and I feel that gives me a bit of moving edge . ( I don't eat bread though. I buy for me a nice yogurt, and whole-rye-crispbread). Also, I try to not to succumb to peer-pressure and eat kinda normal. (Stopping after one serving of each course). I keep telling myself that 1 serving of anything can't be that bad.

My husband and I are taking it upon ourselves to have a "Paleo-ish/Primal-style" Thanksgiving this year.

On the menu:

Mushroom Sausage Stuffing (mushrooms, caramelized onions, sweet Italian turkey sausage, white wine, a tiny bit of organic unsalted butter, fresh tarragon), roast turkey, roasted butternut squash (just some fresh butternut squash cubes from Costco, tossed with a bit of melted coconut oil and sprinkled with cinnamon - baked in the oven), roasted asparagus with garlic and pine nuts, unsweetened (no sugar and no fake sweetener) cranberry sauce. I've got fresh blackberries, blueberries, raspberries for dessert. Might make a coconut milk custard of sorts to layer with, we'll see. Also contemplating making a non-sweet pumpkin "pie" type thing, also no sugar and the crust would be made with roasted and crushed up pecans or maybe almond meal. We'll also make gravy from the turkey drippings, along with chicken broth, organic/gluten-free cornstarch (cornstarch isn't perfectly Paleo, but what the heck) etc.

How am I managing? Well, buying some cinnamon-scented pine cones today from Whole Foods today went a long way toward alleviating the cravings. The house smells like a faintly cinnamon-scented *forest*.

I am proud of us for doing it anyway - despite the holidays, despite the winter, despite some ongoing stress. We'll still have a lovely meal - just that it won't involve marshmallows, chocolate, or rolls.

That said, I am contemplating one splurge - it's mashed yams that are baked in hollowed-out navel orange cups. Boil up some yams, drain and then add some unsalted butter, ground cloves and nutmeg, a dash of Grand Marnier - mash ...meanwhile, scoop out the flesh from some navel orange halves, and fill with the yam mash. Top with a pecan halves, and bake in the oven. You can save a tiny bit of the juice from the oranges and add that to the yam mash too.

I made it through Halloween ...which was a lot worse, because I *love* chocolate stuff, and of course, I'd bought all kinds of chocolate bars and candy to hand out. Somehow, and don't ask me how - I made it without touching any of it. Sent the leftover chocolate with my husband to work the next morning. Out of sight, out of mind helps a whole lot.

This really is a tough time of year for this stuff, isn't it? I'm intentionally trying to come up with a really nice Thanksgiving meal for us that doesn't involve a ton of sugar or grains. Oh, we'll probably have some wine, and I might make those mashed yam orange cups...but that's the worst of it.

I think you should send that cheesecake sampler tray to work with your husband tomorrow. I don't know about you, but I'm horrible with having sweets around the house.

Hang in there, and try to ignore the cheesecake.

Make him take it to work! I really like baking when the weather turns "cold" here (below 85 degrees), but there are only two of us in our family too, and I know if I don't get rid of the cookies and banana bread and brownies and cake, that my husband and I will eat it ALL ourselves. So I plan to give away 1/2 to 3/4 of everything. If your BF won't take it to work, tell him not to buy it. That's the only thing that has worked for us.

How's everyone doing? My BF usually only has Sundays off, so that is my one cheat day each week. He had Mon off too so it's been a few days of being bad. Eating out, a glass of wine too many, and no workouts is a perfect storm. I'll be happy to hang on by week's end. I need to go run tomorrow for sure!!
How is everyone holding up?

EDIT: oh yeah, and he bought one of those 2 1/2 pound cheesecake samplers from the deli on Sunday. Mind you, it's just us 2 in the house. I only had 1 slice so far, after dinner tonight. I wish he'd just take it to work with him!!
