My update:

Failed on the exercise, but will be making it up today in a non-traditional way. I'll get to that a bit later...

Meanwhile:

MONDAY -

Breakfast: 3 scrambled eggs, side of fresh blueberries (1/3 cup)
Lunch: green salad made with butter lettuce, sliced English cucumber, grape tomatoes, chopped green onion ends, kalamata olives, small can of olive oil packed tuna. Tossed whole salad in big mixing bowl with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Since I was making myself a salad for lunch on Monday anyway, I made *three* - two more of the same (sans tuna and dressing) into tupperware containers in the fridge for the next day's lunch (one for me, one for DH). This habit really works for me! Next day's lunch is already made, so there aren't "choices" in terms of what to have for lunch.

Dinner: broiled ribeye steak (very small portion), roasted broccoli florets

TUESDAY:

Breakfast: Costco Kirkland Signature lean turkey burger, pan-fried in a tiny amount of olive oil - topped with sliced roma tomatoes, sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Lunch: The green salad I'd made the day before, but this time, it was topped with some of the leftover ribeye steak from the previous night's dinner - I saved some of it, cut it into thin strips and put in fridge on Monday night (same for husband). So "steak salad" - tossed with olive oil and balsamic. DH got blue cheese crumbles and blue cheese dressing with his.

Dinner: baked chicken breast marinated in lemon juice, olive oil and Greek seasoning, served along with roasted baby carrots.

Again, I have some chicken breast leftover to toss into my lunch salad. When I make salad today, I'll make three again - one for my lunch today, and the two for tomorrow's lunch.

This is how I make sure I get my greens in. It helps me to have my lunch already made, so there's no "veering" off plan. It also helps that I make extra protein portions at dinner to top those salads the next day. Sometimes I save roasted vegetables from dinner to toss into an omelet or salad the next day (eg. roasted asparagus spears or roasted red bell pepper strips etc.).

Meanwhile - I have a ton of stuff going on and my house is a disaster - I am going to do heavy housework all day today. That will be my "exercise". I don't have a housecleaner, and I *do* have a giant black lab doggie. I've been meaning to hire a cleaning person, but just haven't yet been able to coordinate it re: doggie out of the house etc. or phoning cleaners for estimates. I've run out of time, so will do it myself. I have travel, house sitters, then when I get back, I have family from back home coming to visit, and then a few weeks later, more travel (house/dog sitter) etc. So yeah, a lot of cleaning needs doing along with prepping guest rooms etc. After that, I can figure out packing...GAH. I'm going to treat the cleaning as my 'exercise'.

I rode my bike to work for the first time in a month. I also have been trying to do a workout each day, and generally succeeding. I need to go to bed earlier though, as the kids wake up at 5am and I am dragging then.

I read this thread and then got dressed and went out for my first run/walk in 10 days. I use a garmin and according to the HR, pace and distance, it thinks I used about 600 calories in 70 minutes. I may not be fast or go far but burning 600 calories a few times a week can't do me any harm. If I remember correctly, the impact of running makes it a weight bearing activity so it is also good for my aging bones.

Mo, I have trouble keeping a 10.5 min/mile pace even doing run/walk segments so your 10 minute miles sound outstanding to me. Good work!!

When I read Lisa's comment, it reminded me that I had three cups of coffee on Saturday. I quit drinking coffee almost a decade ago and was thinking about taking it up again. I think I will stick with tea.

I'm in, too. I had been very good up until the anniversary. Then we stupidly baked a whole cake at home instead of buying a slice at the bakery (stupid "value" shopping!) and the stress of the past days and the TOM didn't help... Let's buckle down and not lose the old progress!

TS Isaac kind of put me off course for a few days hunkering down and watching the TV. I still need to go get a run in - my last was Sunday morning. Then a lap swim session before the weekend.
On a good note, the BF brought back our grill we'd left with a coworker of his when we moved a few months ago. So, we can cook some more at home, and healthier, once we pick up a propane tank.
I also managed to make a nice big salad for lunch/dinner yesterday, passing over the Little Caesar's pizza box. In the end, I had a piece, too, but better salad and some pizza than a lot of all pizza.
Been doing planks before bed but need to ramp the strength training up more.
I could always stand to cut back on wine, but I'm doing alright compared to some weeks.

I'm in! A lot of changes (job moving, buying a new place and renovating, sick hubby, sick grandmother) and stress in recent months has lead to lots of eating out and comfort food eating. I even restarted a caffiene habit that I had worked very hard to quit.

I am hoping to use the holiday weekend to "reset" myself and plan to: start my weekend cooking habit again to have healthy meals for the week, I've been trying to cut down on portion sizes and I've reduced caffeine to 2 cups a day right now. I also put the candy bowl on my desk out of my direct line of sight.

I need to start my exercise routine again but I'm getting pulled in so many directions outside of work it's been hard to find the time or energy to do so. The best I've done is start going for a walk for 20min during my lunch. I just started that this week.

Umm, my five drink limit? Already hit it, and it's Wednesday!

What I've done right:

Zumba class yesterday.

Apologized to a friend who deserved an apology from me. (Good for my mental/emotional health.)

Mammogram scheduled for today.

Made a great dinner last night: Spinach salad with golden beets, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, chia seeds, pepitas, sunflower seeds, and a little goat cheese. Then tapenade-crusted chicken breasts with a quinoa side dish (quinoa, peas, carrots, red onion, basil).

My exercise plan for today is to hit the weights.

Stay strong, everyone!

Ugh, this week is in the crapper so far. A very stressful night last night and slept late today, plus fast food for dinner last night, which I never do, but circumstances were extreme (relating to my OT thread). So not enough time for a good workout before I go into the radio station. I will try to compensate with salad for lunch. :-/

I think I need a yoga class tomorrow. My body is full of tension right now.

I would be happy to be 61 kg around now. I am about 10 lbs over my high acceptable weight. I am with Zap and it is ice cream that kills me. I am blaming it on perimenopause. I turn 50 this year and the EAT button is turned on for me almost all the time lately. It is like being in high level PMS for weeks straight. ACK!!!! Our work environment is also very stressful lately so I suspect that is a contributor too.

I have been focusing on eating well this week. I am having cereal with skim milk for BK and taking a few boiled eggs for lunch instead of my usual meal skipping. We have golfed the last three days for close to two hours each time so that is good because it is exercise and keeps me away from the fridge. I haven't run for just over a week but plan to go out today. I am also doing a yoga class every Wednesday.

I really need to get this under control and think I am on the right path now. Last night I cooked quinoa and mixed it with chopped cucumber, tomato, green pepper, and sauteed chicken breast. It was very healthy and extremely filling.

I think that wheat may be an issue for me but until I get my diet in check, I don't want to be too restrictive. I am tracking on fitday again and shooting for a 1 lb loss per week. That still gives me about 1500 calories a day which is manageable.

Thanks for starting this MaryK. It helps to read the challenges others are facing and how they are dealing with them.

Glad everyone's week seems to be on track.

This week I'm on vacation which means A LOT of sitting around and meeting people for lunch, dinner, etc. I'm trying to make this a weight loss week instead of a weight gain week by not going crazy and squeezing in as much physical activity as I can. The scale will be the judge when I get back.

Saturday/Sunday: Lost to travel. LOTS of sitting.
Monday: 1/2 hour walk in morning and 3.5 mile run in afternoon.
Tuesday: 1/2 hour walk, workout at home with hand weights, another 1/2 hour walk
Wednesday: Hike planned
Thursday: Run or outdoor activity planned
Friday: Walk + weights planned
Saturday/Sunday: Will most likely be lost.

Wow MaryK - you did well! You managed to go out for lunch and get enough good food in between the lunch salad and the mid-afternoon protein bar. I was a little bit worried about suggesting that brown-bagging might get boring, because sitting there watching everyone else eat junky food is *tough* when you're in the midst of clamping back down on the diet front.

I was going to suggest Chipotle - I don't know if you have one near your workplace, but it's one of my "fast food fall-back options". I order the burrito bowl, no rice or beans, extra grilled vegetables and extra salsa. It's a very nice takeout/fast-food-ish meal. My other "fast fall back food option" is an all day breakfast place - I'll order the veggie omelet, sans cheese, hold the toast and potatoes. Oh, and can I have a side of salsa to drizzle all over my omelet too please? Some places will offer up the option of fruit on the side, or sliced tomatoes. If I was feeling extra hungry, I might ask for a mini-side salad along with the omelet. Don't laugh, but Denny's does a nice veggie omelet (comes with cheese but I ask for no cheese). The veggies are roasted/grilled, nobody minds my "side of salsa" request and usually I get asked if I'd like some fruit or sliced tomatoes in place of the potatoes and toast I've asked them not to bring me.

Meanwhile, I don't know if it's just me, but I've found that if you're going to be stuck in a place where everyone else is eating really good non-diet food, then your meal has to be just as good, or even better than theirs. Seems silly, but it works. I do not feel bad if I can get a nice omelet or if I've got one of those 'non-burrito' burrito bowls. Sitting there with some measly protein bar and some water....well...let's just say I don't think it's very nice to put myself in a place where I feel deprived or where I feel overly tempted. I could do it if I'd already eaten my 'on plan' meal ahead of time and I was just socializing and having a snack. It's *not* very easy (for me) to be hungry and watch people chow down on stuff I can't eat, which is why I find that coming up with something just-as-good, though still on-plan, works better for me in these types of situations.

Do you know what I mean? I don't care if someone's sitting there with a burger and fries if I've got a nice fluffy omelet with some salsa on it. But if I have to sit there with a useless iceberg lettuce salad with a few carrot shavings in it and some lemon juice or plain olive oil and vinegar, I'm going to have a much harder time sticking to plan. I'd last all of 48 hours...lol!

Hang in there MaryK - and I'm so glad today went well.

Where did that 51 kg figure come from?? I'm not sure I'd like to be 51kg, I think my face would be too gaunt.
But I too am in the red alert area and have been for about a month or maybe more. I am currently 3 pounds over my upper limit. I have been eating some version of pavlova every day for the last 4 days.
I am on a little break from exercise til thurs, while my body recovers from the HM I did on Sun (which I soooo hadn't trained enough for, BTW, and so walked up most of the hills) but really need to watch my food intake too.
Am trying to cut out snacking at night and lower my carbs a bit (I can't seem to manage all out low carbs and get back into my exercise (3 runs, 2 RPMS, and some weights and balance) hopefully with a bit of walking added.

Okay, Day Two of tracking. Coincidentally enough, Hubby just bought me a new digital food scale for the kitchen, so I've brought the old one to the office, where I've often wished for a food scale for takeout and for goodies people bring in.

I went out with the guys for lunch today but had a small salad with just a touch of dressing and a sprinkle of cheese, and then had half a protein bar for a mid-afternoon snack, and I think that worked out well. Dinner will be homemade tacos and I have my portion sizes all planned to fit into my daily allotment.

Oh, and I had a trainer session last night and went to boot camp this morning!

I'm all over that, Mo! I've been keeping a food/weight/exercise journal on and off at fitday.com for more than 7 years! Which is how I know that Hershey Kisses are 25 kcal apiece!

Try a food log - it'll keep you honest. And may shock you, if that kind of shock therapy works for you lol. I use the one at my Fitbit site. It's free. http://www.fitbit.com/user/229T63

Aw, Mary. I gotta say, don't beat yourself up too hard. A friend from high school and mom of 5 is going through a serious battle with an eating disorder she's had for a lifetime, and her fear of eating anything at all is so deep. She just posted on FB about how offended she is by the Urban Outfitters shirt that says "Eat Less".

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....98904.html

Oy! Would you believe I just downed 4 Hershey kisses (100 calories total) without even THINKING about it until it was too late??

THIS is the kind of thing that must. stop.

I'm with you MK. For some reason I've been eating more lately, too (it may be stress-related due to DH's ongoing health challenges), but today I decided to get a grip.

Sometimes it's hard to figure why this happens. My friend says she goes through phases where the "EAT" button gets turned on and she can't turn it off. I think that about sums it up!

I've been pretty good about the eating this week except for the fact that there seems to be cake everywhere. Seriously, I don't even like cake all that much, but on Saturday, dessert turned out to be not one, but TWO, pieces of cake - apparently instead of asking which type each person wanted, they just decided to cut everyone a piece of each. =P Had cake again this afternoon b/c it was someone's birthday.

(So my goal for the rest of the week is no more cake!)

By the way, I brown bag my lunch almost every day. It's great for both my wallet and waistline. Helps that there are no good food places around work and my own food is much tastier as well as healthier. I am lucky also that we have a microwave, toaster, fridge, etc, so I mostly just bring leftovers from dinner the night before. Sometimes if people are going out and it's just to the cafeteria/food court, I will just bring my lunch along and eat it with them.

MaryK, for brown bagging check out the pre-made salads at Trader Joe's. That's what I do for lunch. Check the label though, some of them are quite high in calories. I stock up on Sunday, put them in my fridge in expiration date order, so all I have to do is grab the top one in the morning.

Janet, the other day I actually had a chicken pot pie with a side of mac and cheese for lunch at a local place - it was cold and I felt sorry for myself. Glad I'm not the only one who gets the urge to eat more as the temps drop!

My eating has been a little OTT too. I don't know why, but the last few days I've had a major case of the eats. I just want to snack. I haven't gone really overboard, and I've been swimming, but I need to watch it. Maybe it's my body trying to store up some reserves before I travel to cold climes in a few days!

I've been in the same boat, but for about the last year.................. :(

I've put back on about 35 of the 77 I lost, so disappointed in myself. My biggest problem is drinking my calories... lol
Too much fun bar time with friends.

That's a good idea, VC. They usually go to pretty junky places, but it's super casual so I could tag along with my protein bar and order an unsweetened iced tea and still chat and eat with the gang.

I'm in for an extra-healthy week. Have a whole bunch of travel coming up in the next month or so, and it's been too easy to just slouch around in my ultra-casual "at home" clothes this summer. Ack! Now I have to dress up quite a bit, and some of my favourite things aren't fitting as nicely.

I am having the opposite scenario as you MaryK - I've been a total slug in the exercise dept. and funny thing...and all the dieting/eating well doesn't make up for a lack of exercise. It has finally caught up with me, this realization that I can't eat the same as I did when I was going to the gym five days a week, and somehow expect everything to maintain itself. Silly me

Goals for this week:

1. Three meals a day - include 3 cups of vegetables per day.
2. Walk every day - even if it's just half an hour.
3. Be extra judicious with the little 'extras' - ie. make sure that most of my carb intake is coming from fresh produce, and *not* things like ketchup. Measure out a proper serving size of condiments, salad dressings etc.
4. Replace any wine with Tazo's "Calm" tea (chamomile and mint). I like to have a glass of wine once in awhile, but I don't think it's doing me any favours in terms of weight management. The tea is just as relaxing, and does not interfere with my goals.

MaryK - hmm...is there a way you can still go out to lunch with your friends and still eat well? Or is it one of those situations where work friends end up at lunch places that just aren't very diet-friendly? Getting out of the office for lunch isn't just for food - it's a wonderful way to get a break, and refresh for the rest of the day. My husband takes his lunch to work every day, and one day...there was no lunch for him to take - so he went out, and it was such a pleasure for him to get OUT of the place. Just some food for thought. Brown bagging it might get boring after awhile.

Good luck everyone!
