I really need you ladies to keep me accountable for exercise-- my docs won't be happy when they've heard that I've let it lapse during the height of winter because of stress, uncertainty about where I'd be living, lack of gym (multiple things, from closures and more) and having a chest strap that is important to monitor things walk off on me.

I went on my first harder hike of spring today-- I think about 5 miles total, most of which was on a good incline.

On the plus side, I didn't have issues with the incline/activity.

On the negative side, my heart is giving me troubles and I can't seem to maintain my blood pressure so every flat stretch or pause it was dropping pretty suddenly/rapidly and I almost ate dirt a few times because of it.

It is unseasonably warm and dry here, which is killing me.

That said, I need to order a new chest strap/monitor TOMMOROW! and go sign my behind up for a gym as soon as it arrives and then GO, REGULARLY!

I love to exercise, but I have a feeling find a gym is going to be a little stressful and going back might be a little trying till I get in the swing of it.

I'm also hoping to make a doctor's appt out of state (I'm likely coming to a hospital in Dallas near you this summer) and hoping that goes well, I get in, and things work out insurance-wise so I can get my heart issues a little more under control in hopes of that making employment easier.

I do have good news that there is a possible position with a former employer and hopefully I will be hearing soon-- I'm volunteer and getting free training on a new skill/technique later this week!

I'm so glad you're feeling better! Best of all, you know the gluten's responsible for your ills. It took me almost a year to figure out that my digestive problems were due to a diseased gallbladder. I'm fine now, but suffered for months on end with IBS-like symptoms that could have been caused by any number of things.

Wow dianthus, that is great news! Lots of people are sensitive to gluten, it's not always full-blown celiac or anything. A gluten free diet can feel very strict at first, but just remember that there are tons of naturally gluten-free foods around, diet-friendly or otherwise.

So glad you're feeling better

I will re-bump for Mariana.

I also wanted to give a big thank you to Isabel for starting this conversation and Velvetychocolate for the information on gluten and diet. I didn't eat any gluten yesterday and my stomach is almost back to normal this morning (slight protrusion but not the 4" and hard it was on Saturday). I am going to track my food for a week and not eat any gluten and see how it goes but I think I may have found the problem.

i LOVE the idea, Mocchi, of adding/changing instead of taking away. One actually starts doing something..that is just a great way to think of it.

Marianna, congratulations on your weight loss ! And your routine. I completely agree that it has to be a lifestyle change or it won't work. We end up feeling as if we are punishing ourselves. I am working on the sugar piece too ( for the entire family ). I have been shocked to read how many products have sugar in them. I made a banana bread for my family last night ( a "healthy" one ) and if called for FOUR TABLESPOONS of sugar !!!! I added 1/2 of ONE tablespoon ( along with my veggie spike ) and no one seemed to care.

What is "slow weight training" ?

This is a great thread! I've been trying to get healthier before my wedding in August. I've started doing Super Slow weight training twice a week with a trainer and it's going very well! I am also starting to incorporate cardio into my exercise routine, and have been jumping on the elliptical every few days.

I am trying to stay away from sugar and grains and I have lost about 7 pounds so far. I'd like to lose 15-20 more before August. I definitely have to view this as a lifestyle change because diets do NOT work for me. I'm not being super strict with my food, but I am definitely making a conscious effort to eat better. It's working so far.

I like your strategy Mochi :)

Last summer, my Mom had a bit of a health issue, and I flew up there to look after her for a little while. Of course, there were all kinds of things flying around - get diet in shape, do this, do that and so on. It was all a little much ...and so we decided to focus on what we could add, rather than feeling like a whole bunch of things had to be eliminated or reduced.

It worked like a charm. It became, "What can I add?" and that was all. So, she added more fruit, more vegetables, a bit more protein than she might have had in the past. Of course, these all managed to crowd out the other foods a wee bit. Mission accomplished

Another good one is, "What's the best thing I could eat right now?" - this works well when you're figuring out dinner and realize you haven't had any vegetables that day or not much protein or whatever. You just kind of mentally scan through your day (or how it's going so far) and see if you can't fit in something healthful at the next meal.

Really sounds like you're doing quite well ...yay!

I enjoyed my pilates workout at the studio today. I didn't get to do much walking (my main form of exercise in the warm weather) today, but we've been having rain so I do what I can. Saturday I wore myself out walking and fell asleep before nine!

I've been resolute about drinking my eight glasses of water. And I'm making good efforts to eat lots of vegetables. And eating more protein.

The sugar is still a big hindrance in my quest for better eating and weight loss, but on the other hand I'm trying to add on healthy habits rather than subtract detrimental ones, for now. I want to approach all this differently.

Now if I can start consistently getting 7 hours of sleep at night, I will be ecstatic....

dianthus - in my experience, the best way to find out if you might potentially be gluten-intolerant is to completely eliminate it from your diet for 2-4 weeks, and see if you don't feel a whole lot better. That said, there is gluten in things you'd never suspect, so I would always recommend that someone who suspects a food intolerance of some kind start with a Paleo-style diet instead, as it naturally eliminates all/most foods that people are commonly reactive to. This would be easier than spending a lot of time and effort to research where gluten is found, and possibly find yourself not feeling better, because of 'hidden' gluten in something. The paleo-style plans out there automatically exclude any possibility of gluten.

Hidden gluten? For instance soy sauce. Now, you *can* get a gluten-free tamari sauce that tastes just as good, just that it can sometimes be hard to find. Another weird one? Worcestershire sauce in the US is gluten-free, but not the one in Canada - see what I mean?

Meanwhile, a Paleo diet is both restrictive and also quite 'easy' - here's why:

All the meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nuts (except peanuts, which are a legume), natural fats you want. You limit/eliminate processed foods - if you can, you also ditch dairy for a time, though lots of Paleo type of plans are somewhat kind of 'grey area' with dairy. The best thing about this plan is that you're not counting calories, weighing food and so on.

It really does work, though for weight loss, you might skew towards a slightly lower-carb variation for awhile - this means you'd limit fruit to some degree (and not go for the 'all you can eat' deal at first), and choose only the lowest carb fruits (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, after that - things like cantaloupe are pretty low in carb content), and you might be a bit chintzy with the nuts for awhile (this is for weight loss). Two tablespoons of toasted sliced almonds are very low in carbs, and are a great addition to salads or on top of vegetables.

I want to add that most products that have been 're-done' to be "gluten free" (example gluten free bread or things from a specialty gluten-free bakery or some such) are usually higher in calories and carb content than their normal versions. In this respect, it is easier to just eliminate those types of foods for a short time (no bread, no pasta, no muffins, no cereal, no donuts etc.). There are so many foods that are naturally gluten-free - so while it might feel really limiting at first, it's just a bit of a change-up. We do not need a bagel for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and pasta for dinner.

...

Meanwhile, there is a YLF'er here at the forums (amyreh) who has a blog, called "lowcarbhighstyle" - and I have found her reviews and trials of Paleo recipes to be really excellent. She makes it a lot easier, because her meals and experiments with recipes are low-fuss, and do not require a ton of work.

http://lowcarbhighstyle.wordpress.com/

link to her recipe section:

http://lowcarbhighstyle.wordpr.....ipe-index/

A good book to read is "The Primal Blueprint" by Mark Sisson.

....

This is turning out to be a great thread - I'm really enjoying reading everyone's posts here.

ETA --> I just scrolled up and realized you've come up with a starting point dianthus...as you were saying:

"I think I will likely continue the WW counting points but will tailor my intake to be more focused on lean proteins, healthy fats, and fruit/vegetables. Much lower grains and breads. These are the principles of the Paleo and Fat Flush programs so maybe I will have better results."

I think this is a *great* idea. You can tweak WW to work for you.

AG, LOL ! I don't know that I would call it climbing as much as I would call it stumbling upward !!! I really, really liked it. I can't wait to go back this week. My social worker set my goal for the 12 week LiveStrong program as the top of the wall. At first I thought that she was nuts. But now that I have started, I just loved it.

Isabel, you're climbing?! *fist bump* I have been in the rock gym 2 -3 times a week (like I need bigger shoulders....) and am so happy - it's my form of yoga, except I get to blab with my friend and climbing partner the whole time.

I have inexplicably lost two more pounds. I think switching to the occasional spinach smoothie did something to my metabolism. As a bonus, my son now drinks them for dessert with cinnamon sprinkled on top! Sounds horrendous but since DH got me a Vitamix for my birthday, there is no texture at all to them.

I'm planning to start a yoga class at lunch once a week and start running now that the roads are mostly clear of snow... Bleah, i hate the first couple of weeks of running. Now that I've got some weight off, my main goal is to tone up and aim for some flat abs!

Thanks for starting this thread, Isabel! It's good to suffer together...

@ christieanne, another thing i do is rip the little mini workouts out of all my magzines. almost all of the mags seem to have one these days. then cut apart each exercise into an index card. like if there are 6 exercises in their "beach legs" workout i make them into 6 cards. then from the stack i have accumulated ill pick 3 arms, 3 core, 3 legs and do them for a week or two or three then throw those back in the pile a pick another selection. keeps it interesting and most of them require not much equipment. My DH is very naturally thin as well but is starting to understand how important strength is to overall health and that is hard to get by just running/walking. cheers!

Must join in with you ladies. I took a small break from my weight loss which quickly turned into a year and now I've had a few lbs creep back and still hadn't gotten to goal. Feeling flabby and want to get back on track. I need to add exercise, but have been so busy and stressed it just hasn't happened. I did start having green smoothies in the morning to try to boost my energy (and veggie intake) so we'll see how that goes. Only successful a few days so far, but it's a start right?

You guys are so right - I know that the gym would be good for me (I did the personal trainer track before and loved it) and I think i just need to plan ahead more with menus and workouts.
I will develop a strategy - my kids have gone to Y camp and love it. we do have one fairly close by with a pool that DH also might like.

Barbara, no it is not easy at all !!! The time commitment is just really difficult. Bette Midler once said that " Every square inch of my body needs maintenance and it is a bloody bore " ! I heard this when I was younger and had no idea what she was talking about. I do now !!!! LOL ! Good Luck this week !

Hey Isabel.

I've been a bad girl lately, eating WAY too much pasta, which is not what I should be doing. Especially since I lost 12 pounds worth of muffin-top over three years ago and have been able to stay two to three pounds within my goal weight.

Back to my healthier eating routine, more veggies and fruit and lean protein. And LOTS of walking, which gets my metabolism up but makes me ravenous!

*SIGH* Staying in shape isn't easy, is it?

Oh my, MaryK, I am going to start drinking now and fall off the rock wall and my son will win 10 grand on America's Funniest Home video by filming it ! LOL

Christieanne, I belong to the YMCA. There are 3 in our area with rock climbing walls. I really liked climbing the other day. I loved VC's suggestion of paying for a personal training session. Our Ys have trainers and nutritionists that you can pay a little extra to help develop and teach you want will be best for your goals. One of my trainers has been teaching me free weights and I want to learn rubber bands and the big ball so that I can do things at home without fancy equipment. It is amazing what you can do at home with rubber bands and a ball and nothing else. I found this out accidently because I signed up for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's Live Strong program. It helps recondition cancer patients and the Y runs the program. My trainers are awesome and really knowledgeable and one has a nutrition degree ( apparently many do ). On rainy days, you and your husband can walk the track or climb a wall ( if your Y has one ). Regarding your commitment going into overdrive, I have 2 small kids, a disabled sister who I help care for, and my mom who is also disabled. Though I am a stay at home mom, and I am recovering from my cancer bout. With that said, you can sneak in exercise. I park as far away from a building as I can. Sometimes I walk around the building before going in. I have rubber bands tied to my towel racks in the bathroom and I do sets before and after brushing my teeth. One of our trainers, taught a women strengthening and balance exercises for her to do at the sink as she works on her dishes. It is a huge dilemma on how to feed others while you are on a more restrictive diet. I would love to hear from ChewySpaghetti who lost 80lbs or more on a diet and still feeding and cooking for her family over 2 years.

Sarah H, I love your approach of not all at once, do it as you can throughout your day.

Thanks Beth Ann. I will check it out. I have used fitday.com in the past and liked it but am open to options.

The more I read both here (Velvetychocolate) and in books, the more I think I have a gluten intolerance. The symptoms sound similar. I always blame everything on my missing piece of intestine but it could be that my intestinal problem was the result of an underlying food issue. I will try a few different options and see what feels right.

I find this thread very informative and encouraging.

Thanks Isabel for starting it up again.

christianne: I have a suggestion on the gym situation...

Walking definintely helps, and when I joined a gym that helped even more. The thing that made a huge, huge difference? Hiring a personal trainer to get me started on a weight training routine. We spent two weeks setting up a really good routine for me to follow and that was it. The idea was that I'd follow this for the next 8-12 weeks on my own, and if I wanted things changed up or more ideas, I could bring her back in. I really enjoyed this, because I wasn't keen on having a personal trainer all the time, full time etc. Anyway - the trainer I hired *also* offered to come to my house and set me up with a home version of the gym routine if I wanted. Of course, I wouldn't have all the equipment that the gym did, but she said that she had variations/home options for all of the strength training exercises she taught me in the gym.

What do you think of this idea? Find a gym that you can just do month-to-month (such as the Y)...get a trainer for a little while, and then revert to a home version? Do you have space at home for this sort of thing? Any exercise machines kicking around?

Dianthus: I wanted to pop in and say that I'm a devotee of the sparkpeople.com. The website is "messy" due to the adds which keep it free. The exercise and nutrition trackers are fantastic. At the end of the day, I get a pie chart and a daily "report" with graphs and everything. You can customize to fit your goals and interests. My problem? The pie chart displays it in full color -- the biggest slice is labeled "snack!"

I've been doing great at tracking exercise, but I've just started tracking food again. I did WW successfully a few years ago, but tired of dealing with "points" instead of real nutritional information and straight up calories. Turns out I was protein deficient, which was a real surprise.

Isabel - I am inspired by your climbing story! Do you go to a gym that has a climbing wall?

My DH would love that I think and he needs to do some strength building. As for me, my exercise program is stalled and I would like to join a gym again but DH is not pro-gym. He thinks just walking (or running which my leg isn't up to) should be enough but I disagree. I think he is afraid the time commitment will be too much once i go back to work and in reality he is most likely right - he is very protective of my outside commitments for good reason.

I appreciate the encouragement form you all so much! I was thinking about doing a more formal plan such as WW or Paleo but I really need flexibility. Any thoughts on what is the most flexible (and has choices as i still have to feed three others and they will not be happy with no carbs at all and I know I will be tempted) ?

Hmmpph! I was doing quite well - last week I lost 5.2 pounds. This isn't normal - it's because the weekend before that, I probably "got glutened" (gluten intolerant here).

Thursday rolls around, and we decided to eat out before going to a concert. I made sure the item I ordered was gluten free and fit within my overall diet (lower carb, maybe not perfectly "Paleo", but close enough). Um...got glutened again. Entire weekend was spent battling stomach stuff and g/i distress. Weight went back up 3.4 lbs over night. Once again, this is the usual if I accidentally get "glutened." Fun, huh? It will all come back off too quickly but hopefully this is the last time...geesh!

I have decided that there'll be no more restaurant outings at all - except for maybe one place - where I've never had a problem. It's a Spanish tapas type of place and they have 80% of their menu marked "gluten free" and I'd say that 50% or more of their 'small plates' are Paleo-friendly, and 'whole foods friendly' if that makes sense.

Lessons learned:

1. Don't take a chance on a new restaurant right on the heels of just having dealt with being glutened the weekend before - stick to places you know.

2. Don't cave into store-bought sweet potato fries just because you're feeling sorry for yourself for being in pain all weekend long, it only makes matters worse on the weight loss front - even if those mass-market brand sweet potato fries are marked "gluten free".

3. Do not, ever again, try to 'fix' things by trying a probiotic (for the first time in eons) that has a kazillion cfu's of various probiotics in an attempt to speed healing - ouch! Never again.

4. One foot in front of the other - keep it simple and stick to what you know, it *will* work if you stick to it and don't try anything new or fancy.

Whew - thanks for listening (reading) ...

Well after 5 weeks of no lunch breaks (crazy busy time at work and extremely short staffed) I went back to the gym today. It felt so good.

MaryK, Dianthus, Brenda, Mo and Sarah - I completely relate to the few pounds up problem. I am (swallow as I 'fess up) 20 pounds over my Lifetime WW goal so really need to get my "you-know-what" together!

Isabel - I'm so, so happy for you and your healthy goals. Your LifeStrong goal sounds amazing! I'm just beaming for you!

I'm down just a few pounds, after 5 weeks of Weight Watchers. I saw an encouraging number on the scales over the weekend. It has been a very slow process to get to this point. But. It isn't hard. I'm not suffering, and I can eat like this forever.

I'm only 5'1" so the good news is that even with a small loss, I can see it and feel it and enjoy it. That is encouraging. Who cares if it will take forever to get rid of 10 or 15 pounds? I guess the good news is that I won't have a sudden wardrobe crisis, right?

Last week wasn't the greatest for the gym: only 3 times, target is between 5 and 6. I'm going to work harder at that this week.

this is a great post... i have snuck up 5 lbs and need to get back on track before my new clothes dont fit anymore. running enough miles (15-20 week) but my weight lifting has slid back as i have been feeling very tired. I go to the gym but the intensity hasnt been high enough except for friday and today. 19 pullups and 30 pushups today (not all at once mind you! but feeling stronger than last three weeks...) plus some other squats and stuff.

oh.... and have got to stop sharing hubby's nightly beer and daughters potty training M&M's. this a great post to stay more accountable thanks!

I have to join the ranks of too much food and drinks in the pursuit of fun! I am up a couple pounds also. Went out to eat Sat., then rafting Sun. with yummy sub sandwiches and ice cold beers, followed by a barbeque cook out. Oops! No exercise in there, besides the upper body workout of rowing.
I did go running on Tuesday, though, and even with walking breaks, managed a 12 min/mi pace after a month off. I felt pretty good about that. I'd love a run today, but my sunburn is begging to stay inside. So some strength moves will be the exercise of the day.
I'd love to ditch these 2 pounds by my birthday in 3 weeks.

Isabel, we were pretty good with the food this weekend -- had almost all meals at home. But OMG we went shopping for wine and had too much fun tasting when we got it home! And we also had a few rounds of our favorite cocktail, which we call the "blushing recruit" in honor of our Marine:

1.5 oz Wild Turkey American Honey
1.5 oz Meyer lemon juice
1 generous tablespoon or so strawberry puree

Serve on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass. Yum!!

Mary, I'm there with you.... watching the scale move the wrong way. I'm only 3 lbs up, but on 5'1" that makes more of a difference than on taller people. I feel every oz either direction. I'm having minor surgery in a week (eek!) and would really like to get a couple of lbs off before then. I can do it if I control my eating well.
