I would not have thought so many people take up running in their 40s. I think I was about 43 when I did my first learn to run clinic with the Running Room. It is a great stress reliever, cardio, and helps with bone density. A win-win-win.

I went to hot yoga tonight. It was the gentle class but I needed the stretching since my hip flexors were a bit tight from my first run in months.

It is a start.

Congratulations to everyone who has kept on track and for those who are getting back on track.

Over the weekend, I was very bad because of all the birthday goodies. Lingering leftovers have not helped, but tomorrow I'm going for a half hour run on the dreadmill and then yoga class. I have been keeping up with the swimming at least every other day though. A solid half-hour of laps with no significant breaks, and I'm about to up that to 40 minutes.

I ran 8.4km on Tues, and did a pump class on wed. Also talked to someone at the gym about fitting in my legs workout!
But I was very tired (after 3 days of waking up at 5:15-30am) and seemed to have hurt my leg a bit at the back of my hamstring, so decided to have a rest day today - Thursday (instead of the planned running, and an arm weights workout. I had also hoped to go to a spin class didn't make it off the waiting list anyway) I am about 90% sure it was the right decision!

Terrific thread - thanks for starting it CityGirl. Sarah, I'm sorry to hear about your son's illness; from experience, I know how hard it can be to not know!

It's so cool to see so many of us sharing our goals (I am especially excited to see fellow runners!), and you all inspire me to share mine as well. I started running a couple of years ago and celebrated turning 40 by running my first half marathon. I run mostly on trail and I have managed to stay in reasonable running shape afterwards until a running injury at the beginning of the year from which I'm slowly recovering.

I'm trying to get myself back on track with working out again, and this is my week to kick into full gear (I'm putting myself on the Couch - 5K plan so I don't overdo it). Here are my goals for the week -
Run - 3X week (M, W, F)
Strength training class - 2X week (T, Th)

Queen Mum - I have never heard of the Morgan Hill half, but a grape stomp sounds like fun! BTW, I totally understand about the ice cream!
Ramya - your hike looks simply breathtaking (I saw pics on the other thread!).
Jem - I used to have and fail at a weight loss goal, but for me, now, working out makes such a huge difference because even though I don't lose weight, it still distributes the weight so much more nicely.

I'm so thrilled to find this thread, and this supportive community...I look forward to posting and staying accountable.

Oh I was so happy and I went to the gym today. Felt great afterwards because I'm able to run much longer than I could a month ago. Ran for a 1/2 hour and lifted weight for another 1/2 hour. I never liked lifting weight in the past but I'm really into it right now.

So my goals this week are to work out 2-3 more times. Snack less (I'm a big snacker). And up my water intake. That's a biggie for me... I really need a lot more water than I manage daily.

One thing I'm super excited about is that I'm enjoying running and working out again. It's been about two years (I stopped working out about three months into my pregnancy) but before then I worked out pretty regularly. Mostly running but I even did p90x for a couple of weeks. So here's to loving working out again and getting back into shape!

You are all doing great! I'm impressed with those doing a 1/2 marathon. The most I've done is a 10k run. I'm trying to lose weight, but the scale isn't moving much. I am fitting my clothes better, so I guess that's a good think, but I'd really like the scale to drop! Anyway, I am doing the Chalean Extreme videos 3 times a week (weight lifting) and then running at least 5K 3 times a week.

Thank you for starting this! I was away most of the weekend so I'm glad another thread popped up.

Since my first HH post I have done the following:

Tues - mall returns followed by walk around promenade - 2 hour stroll
Wed - ran stairs with hubs - about 15 flights worth (DH's estimate)
Thurs - none - movie date
Friday - fell asleep early.. like 7-8pm :(
Saturday - 2 hour walk through swap meet, 5 hour consultation
Sunday - 2 hour walk through swap meet
Today - date with DH for another stair climb!

Where did you go backpacking? My husband and I actually had scheduled a backpacking trip for this past weekend, but a group of men were going camping so I told him he could do that instead if he wanted.

I'm inspired by you all. My goals are:
1. Lose 1-2 lbs/week (I'd be happy with 4-5 for August)
2. Exercise 2-3 times a week (from nothing that would be a huge improvement)
3. Eat less candy (it is too available at work and I mindlessly grab little bits throughout the day)
4. MORE SLEEP

I'm pretty good about drinking lots of water.

Sarah - hugs to you and hoping for at least a diagnosis. So scary to have anything wrong with your kids, but not to know what it is for so long must be very disconcerting.

Last week, I only did the Tuesday 3 mile run (noted on previous thread). Nothing on Wednesday/Thursday/Friday.

Saturday/Sunday I went on an overnight backpacking trip. 15 miles total including scrambling up/down/over rocks with a pack weight of 25-30 pounds.

Definitely taking tomorrow and possibly Tuesday as recovery days.

QM, which half marathon are you doing at the end of October? If you're up to 10 miles now, you're in great shape.

Like Mo, I am must better on the exercise than the food front. But now my stressy event has taken place, I am going to try a bit more.

Like QM, I am aiming for a half marathon. But do to my fiteness slump I am not really prepared. I need to work really hard as mine is in a few weeks, and I haven't done more than about 6ks
I made it to spin class this morning (which I think is a type of Hiit, class, CityGirl?).

I am trying to work out on what day I can do a more intense leg weights workout. A little logistical challenge.

CG I am very glad you posted this thread. I read it yesterday and it was definitely a contributing factor to getting me off my butt today. I have been golfing a few times per week but just 9 holes on a short course. I haven't run for almost 2 months now and my weight is creeping up to an alarmingly high level. I golfed this morning and just got back from a run/walk. I only ran 1.3 miles but then kept walking and ended up walking 2.75 miles home at just under 4 mph. I am going to try to do some form of activity 4-5 times per week. I am meeting a friend for a walk on Tuesday and going to hot yoga on Wednesday. I am hoping to try another short run/long walk on Thursday. I may do some light weight training tomorrow since it is a holiday. I may even haul my bike down from the rack, pump up the tires and take it for a spin this weekend.

Sarah, I am sorry to hear your son is unwell. It is very stressful to not know the cause. Hopefully the doctors will figure it out soon.

Mo, I'm hoping to do a half marathon the end of October, so I'm slowly working my way up. I was up to 8 miles, and today decided to try for 10. It was brutal, but I got through it. As far as weight, I'm way past my danger zone... but I can only take it one day at a time and do what I can.

Wow, QM, 10 miles! Good for you. I think you earn ice cream with that ;)
I ran this morning, but only 3 miles. The heat/humidity combo isn't just uncomfortable. It's downright dangerous with my tachycardia. Bums me out really, because I'd love to be doing longer runs, and more often.
But I am going to do the Facebook group challenges this next week to change it up a little. I need to work on strength training anyway.
I am, like MaryK, just barely under the danger zone (119.5 to be exact) and I am fairly diligent in not letting 2 pounds become 5 or more. I was seeing 117 regularly in Tahoe before the move last month.
Food (and wine for that matter) are a bigger struggle for me than the exercise part. The BF gets 2 days off this weekend, as well, which means worse choices, as we tend to eat out when he's not working. Pizza on the way tonight, actually :/

I really need to get better about drinking water and eating right. My husbands work schedule has been crazy lately and it is having a horrible effect on my eating. Last week, knowing he was going to be gone every evening, I kept a container of ice cream HIDDEN in the freezer and indulged nightly. (I was hiding it from my boys, in case you were wondering)
But, I did run 10 miles this morning, so that should have burned off a few of my sins from last week.
I actually am keeping up with a good work out schedule... 4-5 times per week, I just need to get my eating under control and drink my water to keep cravings at bay.

First week already?

I'm down in weight (multi-decade low!), but my goal was to get out walking more, and I haven't done too terribly well, I'm afraid. I'm struggling with my energy levels and it is wicked hot, especially today. With the humidity, we are up to about 42C, which I don't feel like calculating, but that's definitely triple digits in Fahrenheit. But I will try to do better next week. Have company coming, so that will mean a day's sight-seeing, which could end up counting for the entire week!

I am plugging away at the gym. My goal is two private training sessions and three boot camp classes per week, plus two tap dancing classes.

My food hasn't been fantastic, but my weight is down a little bit today, out of the DANGER DANGER RED ALERT area, anyway. I'd like to lose a few pounds and get back under 120, but I haven't seen that since before my cruise last October so it's tough going.

Great thread, citygirl! I am with you on envying Jayne's rainy summer, even though it is not nearly as hot where I am as it is in DC. Still too hot and dry.

sarah, hope you son's illness gets diagnosed soon, and both of you will be feeling better! I am slightly afraid of bikes (childhood accidents :)) so I am in awe of you and citygirl.

I love runkeeper website as a motivation for running - apparently I have done 45 miles in the last month. Need to go for a run today but I have to wait until the weather cools down.

sarah - sorry to hear about your son's illness. Any illness puts a lot of stress on anyone so we're here for you. Remember to think of yourself too.

CG - I am SO glad to hear you're back on your bike! I know it can be very hard to get back on. After my accident I was so cautious on my bike that I literally "fell over" on it a couple of times. I'm sure the bystanders thought I was nuts.

Anyway, I, too have gained a few - I think I'm eating to de-stress about my son's illness, which has lasted all summer and is as yet undiagnosed. Anyway, my goals are to:

1) run 2x/week
2) go for a long (25 miles) bike ride 1x/week
3) pilates class 3x/week
4) GET MORE SLEEP
5) lose 1 lb per week for the month of August.

And, of course, ride to work every day (which is only 2 miles).

Thanks for motivating me!

jayne - Gosh i wish it would rain here. It's hot and humid and I've been running on the "dread"mill (dreaded treadmill). I guess as long as I have good music, running on it has been manageable.

I try to run 8 km once a week, and a shorter runs every other day. And one 10 Km every month just to expand a bit. I am doing pretty well with this while on vacation. I love running in the rain so I get the most out of this rainy summer!

Hi all. I've decided to post every Saturday to see how we are all doing with activity and healthy eating. I just weighed myself and have a gain of 3lbs. YIkes!! I blame my trip to the beach last weekend plus eating out too much this week...oh and humidity. LOL!!

I make mini short term goals for myself that way I don't feel so overwhelmed. My goals for the month are:

-drink lots of water
-get all my fruits and veggies in
-lose up to 1 lb. a week (the healthy way) and up to 5lbs. month of August.
x-exercise 5-6x a week
x-ride my bike - I finally got my bike back and feel good riding

My activities this past week were and will probably be the same the next few weeks:

Mon: 45 min HIIT class, 15 abs
Tue: Ran 5 miles
Wed: Ran 35 minutes
Thu: 40 minute dance class, 30 minute run
Fri: 45 min HIIT class, 15 min ab
Today: supposed to go to ballet class but got got groceries instead, then cleaned, no running today.

What are you goals for the week?
