Tara- I weigh more than you!
I would start by weighing yourself every day and drinking and lots of water. Limiting sweets and adding walking is a great plan- you will get there!

Tarzy, I totally sympathize! I was feeling something very similar to you after the holidays. I knew I was at my peak weight, and I don't want to keep eeking up a pound or two a year, which is what's been happening since I got married almost 8 years ago.

Since the holidays ended, I've been logging my food intake and exercise on my iPhone with an app called My Fitness Pal. It's helping me keep my portions and snacking in check.

I've also made the totally unprecedented and unexpected leap into running. I've been moderately active for most of my adult life (but pretty sedentary since the fall), and I signed on to train for a half marathon in June, so I'm now running 4 days a week. I'm only 3 and a half weeks into the program, and I can feel my muscles again (even if it's because they're sore!), and I can feel small changes happening in my body. I don't own a scale, so I don't know if I've lost any pounds -- I think I may have lost 3-4 judging by how my clothes are fitting. I don't advocate everyone take up running, but I think finding something active that you enjoy or that you can participate in with a group can be really helpful in keeping your activity level up.

I know all too well that feeling of wishing you could just quickly take away what you've gained, but as we all know, it didn't appear overnight and it won't go away overnight either. Be patient and kind with yourself!

Welcome on board. Sorry you're feeling down but no time like now to change things around. For me, food logging helps tremendously. But we all have our own tips and tricks. Just being aware and making a concerted effort is a great start!

May I join the conversation?

I recently saw two pictures of myself that had me almost in tears, and I realize I really have to lose some weight. I tried to justify it with "the camera adds 10 pounds," and "I was standing at a weird angle," but the other people looked pretty much how they looked, so I have to accept I've gained weight. Sigh.

So, I'm a bit depressed and angry at myself for gaining this weight. I would love to lose 10 pounds. (I'd be ecstatic with 20, but I'd better not push it right now.)

My knee-jerk reaction is to think I'll fast and do the treadmill for an hour every day, but I know that's not realistic. I know what I have to do is cut out the sweets during the week, walk more every day, and just be sensible. But I want results now! Grrr ...

I keep looking at those pictures thinking, "OMG. How did this happen?" I'm not feeling excited about fashion right now, because I feel too fat. (Which leads to old, ugly, useless ... all that negative stuff.)

So - any advice about how to start? (In the spirit of commitment, I'm 5'4" and currently weigh 153. YIKES!) I'm glad I found this thread!

Welcome, lovinfl and Louise! Good to hear from you.

Sounds like people had a mixed week. But thanks for checking in anyway! I've said this before but I find it so inspirational to see us all sticking with it and trying again even when things are challenging.

I didn't really do my check-in before. I had a pretty good week, lots of exercise - I got some exercise every day, which was great. The weather has warmed up a bit here and the giant piles of snow actually melted over the weekend, so I went for a long run on Sunday and loved it. I stuck to my eating plan and although my weight was flat I noticed that the body fat monitor scale says I'm losing fat. That sounds great so I'll go with that.

Okay, I'm back. This was the easiest procedure of the three I've had, and I was actually awake for part of it and remember it. Got to see what my insides look like--sort of an Alladin's cave--colorful too. (I expected black & white instead of color monitor.) Everyone on the staff was so nice. They said nice things about DH too--about how great he looked carrying my red purse for me--it went so well with his olive jacket. He doesn't mind that sort of kidding. We should have taken a photo.

No problems, so I am happy for a good report--all looks healthy. Now back to sleep.

I'm officially joining the healthy habits. I had a micro dermabrasion facial on Saturday and while discussing my face with the beautician we came to the conclusion that my bad skin is probably through drinking too much coke and caffine (in tea) so I'm now just on water and green tea (yuck!!) Oh to be young again when just 2 days of water would clear my skin!!! x

I was out of town and off the forum, but I thought I would do my update.

This past week wasn't bad with exercise. I really have made gains in the amount of cardio I am handling, which is exciting. I would really love to get back to the point where I can do a decent amount without experiencing heart-related symptoms--- it would certainly help me feel more like a normal 20-something and less like my grandma.

I probably am up in weight. I had a weekend without major nausea. I was on a trip and was really lucky enough to have some great, wholesome food available to me. Oh, it was so good. I just ate and ate and ate. It felt great to be able to eat like that-- got teased about being a teenage boy. But anyway, my love for mutton and blue corn anything may have affected my waistline. LOL.

I have to call a doc tomorrow and get into it with the office staff because I got a nasty surprise about being billed for equipment and a procedure I haven't agreed to go through with yet.

The one thing that the trip really did was help me realize that I have a long way to go with managing symptoms and I need to figure out some way to get and keep a schedule that works for me so I am able to do more.

Oh, and I am still trying to keep from getting ill. Have had lovely miserable swollen lymph nodes and fever for two weeks now, but no symptoms. My body overreacting to the exposure as usual. One of the people I live with is finally getting over their illness, and the other one got sick while I was gone. I am so ready for that to be over!

Ugh, Susan. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. It will be nice to get it over with though--I hate having things like that hanging over my head.

I'm back in my exercise routine and think I'll be able to get back on track with the fruits and veggies this week. We've had company so meals have not been optimal. I'm okay with it though--we're in it for the long haul so a week isn't going to set us back.

Wishing everyone a successful week!

Great suggestion, Barbara. I'm sorry you have to do this annually--I'm complaining about the insistence on every 5 years. On the other hand, it's good to know we are being closely watched and can catch it early if it does develop. Thanks.

Ms Maven,

I KNOW how rough those colonoscopies are - My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1996. She knew right away that something was wrong, had immediate surgery, which involved removal of a small, cancerous tumor and surrounding lymph nodes. She's 83 and cancer free!

My three siblings and I have had annual 'scopings' since we hit our 40s, so I feel your gnawing HUNGER! It's a rough way to drop a pound or two, which I usually do. My fix: Ben and Jerry's Pistachio-Pistachio - the whole pint - after the procedure and a LONG nap. Hang in there. My thoughts are with you.

I wrote a whole post and when I clicked submit I was suddenly logged out. Okay, a redo:

The gift chocolates from 2 weeks ago set of a few days of sugar craving. Today I am preparing for a major (for me) healthy habit: a colonoscopy. All I get to consume is basically sugar water! (Lemon Jell-O, Coke or 7-up, clear broth or tea & coffee. I could have apple juice, but last time I drank the juice and it gave me days of horrible indigestion.)

I hope this isn't TMI for you: My mother was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 57. She had surgery and completely recovered, but lived in fear of a recurrence the rest of her life. She died just short of 93 of apparent Alzheimer's. I was once told that there might be a genetic connection to cancer on her side of the family, but I've been unable to find the ongoing study other than the hospital's yearly follow-ups on her health. I know of no one else in my close relatives who has had this cancer.

Medical information was much harder to access then, but over the years I've researched and kept up on the latest information on cancer prevention as well as heart disease, which killed my FIL at age 55. We adjusted our diet and consumed much less fat, and lots more fruit and veggies, whole grains, with fish and poultry and little red meat. I hope it pays off.

This will be my third colonoscopy, and as people will tell you, it isn't the procedure, it's the preparation. Today is prep day, tomorrow morning the main event. I have put this off several times because of scheduling problems and my husband's ongoing health issues. I was scheduled for Jan 4, but cancelled because he developed a serious infection and had a different procedure that same day.

I will be sticking close to home--have to miss class tonight, darn--but it will be a big relief to get it over with. It's stupid to say this, but maybe I will lose the last two pounds. Anyway, it's just past 10 am, I've had 300 calories and am starving. Long day ahead.

I just joined this forum but looking for others to help with weight loss support. It's always more enjoyable in a forum/challenge setting. I have been trying to lose weight since first of year. I jump started my diet with a detox body wrap which *totally* eliminated my cravings for greasy fast foods, sweets and most important for me - soft drinks and sodas. I started off losing rather rapidly but in the last 3 weeks, the pounds aren't coming off as fast. That was also the time I started at the gym - cardio and weights. I was very discouraged until I finally weighed in again end of last week and noticed that although pounds wasn't decreasing, the percentage of body fat had dropped some. Love scales that show everything. Now I am eating mostly veggies and salmon, chicken, or turkey. I am also drinking a protein shake daily. I take supplements that are herbal - vitamins/Greens (helps with energy and makes body alkaline), and some things for getting better workouts and boosting metabolism. I have lost a total of 27 lbs so far. I only measure once a month but measurements are due in 4 days. Last month, I had lost a total of 12 inches in a month overall. Now I feel I am hitting plateaus and when my kids eat things that I shouldn't, it starts to actually look good again. I don't want to be tempted. Having accountability partners help me keep focus. I have about 75 more lbs to lose.

Oy.

I've picked up the pounds I dropped in the past couple of weeks -- like Chewy, I'm hoping it's just bloat and will be gone once I get my act together. My one-year anniversary of my weight loss surgery is in 10 days and I am going to try to stick to the VERY straight and narrow between now and then and see if I can get into the "one-teens."

It's so interesting, though -- I did a lot of shopping over the weekend and even though my weight hasn't changed much in the past couple of months, I am definitely getting smaller. I'm a 2 on the bottom and a 2/4/6 on top, which is just blowing. my. mind.

Re: exercise, I agree that it's more important to get a handle on the food than to dive right into exercise ("Biggest Loser" notwithstanding). I didn't set foot in the gym until I was 5.5 months into my weight loss program. And I've made adjustments as necessary along the way to keep it challenging.

Have a good week, everybody, and keep up the great work!

I had a horrible week with food. I've been having some hormonal issues, causing nausea. The only things that I could eat or cook were things that I do not even eat anymore, and I put on a shocking amount of weight this week eating them. But, I am feeling much better now and trying to get back to the way that I had been eating, and keeping up with my exercise. I'm hoping it's mostly bloat and will come back off easily.I was having a time issue with my sitter also- I think that I have that squared away so that I can get my exercise in.

The past week was a tad rough and I missed a workout, but at least it was only one. Eating wasn't as well as I'd like either, it really isn't easy to pick healthy choices when you eat out. When work gets really busy it's tough to maintain consistency with meals and exercising, even with pre-planning of meals. I'm looking forward to a couple weeks from now when the produce in stores looks a lot nicer and salads will be tastier. After this week I realize I need to have on hand a couple of really fast to prepare, doesn't completely trash the diet meals for busy weeknights. If I know I have something at home, grabbing something on the way will be less enticing.

One thing I have done, is a weekly baked item. Either a fruit or nut based bread or muffin. I freeze half and have something to grab and go with on the weekends. This has stopped me from doing a run to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts on weekends when I want to get out the door and don't have time to prepare breakfast. I make a quick cup of hot tea, throw that in a to-go mug, grab a muffin or bread and microwave and run out the door. I still get my sweet treat but my wallet is happier and I assume the calories are less too.

I did great all week until Sunday dinner. Big juicy steaks and plenty of red wine. But the rest of the week I really kept my calorie intake in line with my burn and saw some of my lowest weight in a while.
Exercise still wasn't an option but I think this week I can manage the indoor bike. I want to focus on some rehab this week now that I've had 3 weeks of rest for the ankle. I can (and should) do ab work in addition to the bike. So that's what I hope to accomplish this week.

Medusa,

A solid foundation of healthy habits is indeed the key! Exercise should be added in small increments, especially if you haven't been active in the past. My workouts are regular, simple and fun. I've been doing more yoga, pilates and walking since the weather is warmer now.

Diet is simple for me: South Beach eating plan rocks! Cutting out white rice and bread, processed sugar AND potatoes (except sweet potatoes) did the trick for me. I lost 12 pounds worth of menopot and have kept it off for 2 1/2 years!

Oh how interesting! I can certainly say that I haven't tried to add lots of exercise right away lol!

My habit last week was finally to add something a bit more energetic each day. For last week that was just to up the effort levels when I was walking anyway. Although it's not much, it meant that I was walking faster and getting out of breath when eg walking to work etc.

This week I'm going to increase that a bit I hope and also try to cut out a few more sugars from my diet. I'm going well on healthy snacks and fruit - just now need to avoid joining in on the yummy treats when the children have tea... It seems such a shame not to join in, but I'm joining in TOO MUCH!

I'm back on a gently downward trend on the weight loss. I'm probably averaging out at a loss of about 0.5 lb per week. Not a lot but it has tended to stay off using my slowly slowly approach.

I have been pretty consistent! I've been eating at a vegetarian restaurant all week, so tons of vegetables, good carbs, no meat!
I continue to exercise 6 x a week and I'm feeling better than ever!
I have been able to mantain my weight easily and feel really good!

Thank you for the link from sparkpeople. As far as the check in, I'm not doing as well as I would like. Lent starts this week and the practice of starting better habits in hopes that they become lifestyle. I'm going to add more exercise.

It's time to check in again! How did things go last week?

Here's a link that I found interesting. It's from sparkpeople.com and summarizes what they found when they surveyed their members to see what types of approaches to diet and exercise were associated with the best results over the long term. One of the things they found is that the people with the best long-term results focused on building a foundation of healthy habits and didn't try to add a lot of exercise right away. Pretty cool.
