Wow, more good updates.

Janet, congrats on making 5 miles. That's fantastic!

Mellllls, maybe you could try looking at some sites online that have nutrition information. I've been using sparkpeople after it was suggested by someone here (Queen Mum, I think). It has articles about nutrition and suggested eating plans.

JG, welcome! Your plan sounds very ambitious. That's not intrinsically bad, but do you think you might burn out if you try to do too much too soon? As part of the challenge a lot of us have been making one small change at a time in the hope that it will become a habit and be more sustainable. Perhaps you could consider that.

Anne, it sounds like it's quite wise to take it easy when it is so hot. If you're happy with your weight and appearance then it sounds like it's going great! No need to stress about it.

I have run twice in the last few days (5km and 7km). I decided to skip my all-morning workout on wed to have some time at home and catch up with the sewing/mending/alteration (needed because we have had a long stretch of very hot weather) and don't regret taking this time off.
Haven't really been watching my eating much. I am not very motivated really, since I am not overweight and seem to look okay (except in the mirrored walls of the group exercise room in my daggy gear!) Weight is ranging from 0.5-1.9 over my theoretical "goal".
Life is a bit stressful, and one of the hottest summers on record has worn us down in my part of australia. I am just hanging in there and not expecting too much of myself in this area which is really a very small part of my life overall.

Ok, I scanned a lot of the previous threads. Here's what I'm going to do --- posting it here to keep myself accountable! Some of this I'm already doing, some I waffle on from time to time....

Baseline: Weight tomorrow morning & measurements tonight.

Daily Eating Goals: 2 fruits, 3 lean proteins, 5 veggies, 8 water, 2 calcium, 2 fats. No sugars!

Weekly Exercise Goal: 1 regular run (30 min), 1 hill run (30 min), 1 long run (40 min), weights 2x/week. Duration expected to be about 15 min to start & increase past 30 after about 1 month. Work up to 100 crunches each time do weights by May1st!

Daily Motto: "Every D*mn Day, Just do it" ~ seen on a Nike t-shirt recently

Trigger food & plan of attack: Nuts/Fruit mix - do NOT keep in car. Take banana or yogurt when running errands + water/green tea.

Sample menu: Breakfast: Green tea, egg whites Snack: Banana. Lunch: Lean protein + large salad. Snack: 2nd fruit - likely apple or grapefruit & greek yogurt. Dinner:lean protein + 2 veggies. Evening snack: veggies, green tea, skim milk or unsweetened almond milk.

Evening snacks are my BIGGEST weakness. Anyone have words of advice? Blueberries! :)

Indulgence: Green smoothie's!! :)

Alcoholic Beverages: Weekends Only, MGD64+V8+Lime

Still eating in moderation and doing well with calorie intake, but the exciting thing for me was my training on Saturday. I'm in training to run in a half marathon in June, and I have never run in my life! It was only my second day training with the team, and I maintained a 2-min walk/2-min run pace for nearly the entire 5 miles. I am amazed, because I'm not exactly in the best shape of my life now. It gave me a boost, and now I'm actually looking forward to running tomorrow morning.

Some good ideas. My only concern is that things wouldn't actually stay warm. I would probably have to carry them around with me all morning in addition to laptop and books because it is still around freezing. Friday I had a waterbottle freeze in my truck because I forgot it for two hours!

Elly-
From what I understand, the way the Bento Boxes are constructed gives you the right proportions of carbs to protiens, etc. If you don't mind cold rice, then rice could be the largest portion, then hard boiled eggs or a cold meat salad or bean salad or sushi, and sides of things like fruit or veggies with a dip, pickles, etc. I suggested it because it would work with all cold items. I can understand not wanting to eat cold food in the winter, though.
What about a thermos of soup and some crackers? You could just make one pot on Sunday and eat that all week.

Good job, everyone! I love it when people check in even when things aren't going perfectly. It helps to get back into things and not give up. Yay!

Barbara, Lindt truffles are one of my favorite treats as well! Those things are delicious, especially the white chocolate ones.

Elly, some bento boxes have insulated compartments so they can keep things warm, if you'd prefer a warm lunch. You could bring some leftovers. Also, you could do a lunch without a lot of protein and it would probably be ok, right?

JG, of course you can join! Everyone is welcome. For past threads, I suggest doing a search on "healthy habits" - the threads all have that in the subject line. There's been a check-in thread each week since the year started and some other great discussion threads as well.

No, I don't know a ton about Bento boxes. I guess my question would be what to put inside them. I don't figure it is any different than the magic of tupperware. Is there something special I am missing? I'm struggling because at the college I don't have access to a microwave, so anything I bring has to be eaten cold (that means leftovers are out, we eat entirely wild game and it really needs to be heated up to be edible). I'm having problems with protein. I'm off sandwich meats and most preservatives that they put in meats right now for doctors orders. I would go the nut route, but I've been getting stomach aches from that. I also don't eat beans for the same reason. I usually use greek yogurt as a protein for breakfast. I guess I could do cheese with fruit. The only other option would probably be to cook chicken or eggs to put on salad. I just haven't had the motivation lately to to go through the extra effort, especially since cold salads don't even sound good when it is 34 degrees!

Boy, do I sound kinda whiny-- I swear I'm not(ok, maybe I am), I just have been having a hard time with food period since January. I am either ravenously hungry or nauseated and it is very unpredictable. It is hard to go through the effort of cooking and prepping a lunch when it may sit in the fridge for two or three days (except for jaunts in the lunchbox) getting less-than-fresh until I can stomach it.

I've been really good, despite the BIG bag of Lindt peanut butter/milk chocolate truffles I just bought. I allow myself ONE after supper. Goody control is the key to happiness AND remaining slim.

In addition to my 3x week upper body weight training and daily 20-minute elliptical workout, I've added a 2-mile walk around my neighborhood, whenever I feel like it. It's hilly and perfect for serious walkers!

Khris, I love my Bento Box! It's an attractive way to achieve portion control. Just be careful what you put in it.

Have you considered Bento Box type lunches? These are all the rage with a certain group of friends right now, and they do look interesting. It's a nice way to get some variety, and apparently there are books and websites devoted to the art of making Bento Boxes.

Just this morning I packed up some jeans and other stuff for the Goodwill/Hope bag. I am tempted to keep some because, well, what if I gain it back, as I have several times? I am not going to make it easy. Goodbye jeans, some of which are 5-6 years old and it's time to let them go anyway. I still have other things that I haven't worn much because they have been too small.

I lost 2 pounds in February. Not a lot, but I'm close to my goal. Six overall since Jan 2. A relative sent a box of Godiva chocolates--a big box--but since DH can't each much fat--this probably slowed down the loss for the month. I did do a reasonable job in rationing them out so they lasted a week.

Having to check in every week makes it easier to stay motivated.

My jeans are following suit with MaryK's. I recently went and tried on some size 2's and was quite happy to have a few that fit without a belt. My jeans are getting to the point where I'm belting so much material, it's starting to cause buldges in weird places. I have been sticking with 3 days elliptical/stepper and two days free weights at home. I had to shift one day this week to the weekend due to an after work commitment, and it would have been so easy to bypass the makeup session. My current sweet treat, is red bean patties I found in an asian food store. They are individually packaged which helps. I'm also drinking more water. I have a cup of water, then if still want a treat, I eat a treat. Sometimes, I was just thirsty! Congrats to everyone on your success!

Hooray for all of us who are still hanging in there!

Elly, you REALLY don't want to do meth because it causes bone loss in your jaw, and believe me when I say that periodontal disease is NOT anything you want to get involved with! LOL

I've had a great week and saw a new low number on the scale. But I partied all weekend so it's bounced back up this morning. *shuffle* Hubby is gone for three weeks, though, so I'll be all by myself doing healthy eating so I think I have a shot at making my under-120 goal by March 17.

It was the best exercise week yet -- I did two tap classes, two sessions with the trainer, and three boot camp classes. Note to self: Don't do boot camp right before tap because it leaves me with NO LEGS for tap. Seriously... it was just awful. So lesson learned there -- need to spread out the workouts better. I've been disappointed because there's no boot camp on Fridays after work, but Hubby suggested I just go back to my old gym and do a workout on my own on Fridays, which is a great idea. I still have that membership through August, so I might as well use it!

Oh, and this week all my size 4 bottoms got too big to wear, all at once. I think they're all in the same union or something! ;)

Have a good week, everybody, and stay healthy!!

I think I need to start doing hard drugs. Now I just have to pick the right one-- I'm thinking meth. Cheap, readily available, and an upper!

Just joking. As far as fitness goals are going I am doing well. Still haven't managed to fit more than two workouts into any week, but I am up to almost 30 minutes of cardio a session and am probably going to start increasing the weight I've been lifting and start working some muscle groups I hadn't. The only struggle I have been having is actually loosing strength in one muscle group. IDK what's up there. I have lost 10 pounds since my doctor's appt in early Feb and I don't know how much of that is because of the exercise or the meds.

Everything else hasn't been great. I am still having problems finding things to take for lunch. I am not supposed to eat lunch meats because of the nitrates, and peanut butter or anything of that texture doesn't seem to digest well-- I'm not allergic to nuts, but I have issues with digestive tract slowing and it gives me nausea.

The lady of the house did end up coming down with something and I am not sure if I caught it or not. I start feeling pretty horrible anytime I've been exposed, so I guess I will just see if my body can fight it off. Knock on wood, I haven't been sick yet this winter (except for sinus infections, which were chronic) but every few weeks I deal with days to weeks of feeling horrible but not getting true symptoms after I have been around someone ill.

I've just been exhausted. I could seriously drink a gallon of coffee and still be a zombie. Darn heart doctor! Yet, of course, I still can't sleep much at night.

Lots of good things here! Sounds like everyone is doing well or making the best of less than ideal circumstances. Medusa - interesting statistics!

Weight wise I seem to be back where I started in January, but I'm not concerned. I'm getting back into heathy habits after a family holiday and DH said I was looking thinner so possibly my measurements are changing.
Anyway, I've been adding more nuts and seeds to my diet successfully last week. So, this week...
Hmm might finally have to be putting some effort into a bit of exercise! I've successfully avoided that (as medusa cruelly, though unknowingly, reminded me) for 2 months.

So, my goal is to walk faster when I'm out and about. I'm interested in intervals, and will be using that to help me.

ETA I'm not sure what I actually weigh, though, as our floors are not level and I can make the scales come up higher or lower just by leaning the right way...

I had a good week for exercise- Yoga 4 times and walking on the treadmill 3 times. My weight is the same as last week, but earlier in the week it had been down a pound so I think it's salt swelling. I bought some ham and pork this week- not the lean meats that I want to be eating, but it was cheap.
Onward and upward! (or downward!)

Thanks for the check-in and encouragement!

To be honest, the past week has been a cheat week. I'm on vacation in a theme park without a car or a microwave or grocery store within walking distance. At first I was hoping I'd be able to buy a bunch of fruit/veggie snacks but that just hasn't been feasible - though I did stock up on some apples and bananas. I selected some healthy-ish options for meals and took advantage of fruit and veggies when they were available, but it wasn't nearly as healthy as what I was eating at home.

Exercise (real, intentional exercise, anyway) also hasn't been feasible because my feet are so sore from constant standing and walking for days on end that running is out of the question, and the hotel we're staying in doesn't have a fitness center.

Anyway - I just made peace with the fact that I was going to go off the plan this week, and back on as soon as I'm home. I have a two week trial to a hot yoga studio scheduled to begin when I get back - the workouts are really intense - and know exactly what I need to do to get my eating back on track. So I guess I haven't really made it to the two month mark yet, but I came darn close, and I know I can get back on without trouble once I'm back home to my routine. I know there will be a gain when I get back, though.

Hope that others are doing better.

Good for you, Medusa, for getting in the workouts despite having pulled muscles. I am still not able to walk so my habits are all about balancing calories in with calories out. I did great all week until yesterday's homemade gumbo compliments of the BF. Overdid the balance by 400. But am still just under goal weight and hanging steady. I'm most concerned with losing fitness over this recovery time but it would add insult to injury to also gain unwanted weight on top of that!

Time to check-in again! We're at the end of February, so it's been 2 months. I think we should celebrate for working on improved health for this long. Congratulations everyone!

I looked up some numbers on how people stick with New Year's resolutions. According to what I found (the web page below), only 64% of people who make New Year's resolutions maintain the resolution after 1 month, and 46% after 6 months. So sticking with what we've done so far is fantastic. How do you feel about making it to the 2-month mark?
http://www.proactivechange.com.....istics.htm

This link also has an interesting point, that making resolutions is associated with 10 times greater success in problem solving:

New Year's resolvers (sample = 159) and comparable nonresolvers interested in changing a problem later (sample = 123) were followed for six months via telephone interviews. Resolvers reported higher rates of success than nonresolvers; at six months, 46% of the resolvers were continuously successful compared to 4% of the nonresolvers.

I had a pretty good week; my main challenge was that I tweaked a muscle in my neck/shoulder last Monday at the gym and had quite a bit of pain during the week. I did go to massage twice, used the foam roller and heat pack a lot, and stretched, and it seems to have mostly cleared up. Last week I did crossfit twice, went running once, went to yoga three times, and went hiking once. So it was good for exercise. For eating it was mostly good but I did have one cheat day, that wasn't great.
