This thread really makes me think!

LI - I was really pleased you mentioned the sleep business, because it's made me realise that I really need to get back on the case with that - I've been going to bed too late and it's made it harder to get up in the morning. Last couple of nights I've been closer to my ideal bedtime and it's much better.

Lisa - I eat too many biscuits and snacks. The way I'm trying to deal with that is not by replacing them with things, but by adding the healthy things on top to try to 'squeeze them out'. The main things for that are drinking enough water and having enough fruit and nuts and seeds. What about trying to add in those healthy things first and not worry too much if you have the chocolate on top? Over time your body should get used to getting what it needs from the healthy things and the cravings may reduce? I eat way too many crisps once the children go to bed and I'm preparing our food. I'm trying to drink a pint of water then, as a lot of that turns out to be thirst.

Anne - with the sugar business, try noticing how your body feels about half an hour after having the sugar. You may find that you don't feel great once that sugar surge subsides, and thinking about how that feels may help you when you decide if you want to have the sugar the next time.

Medusa I was just saying to my BF last night how long my bag of asst. Hershey Nuggets has lasted. They are 50 cal each and a perfect chocolate fix for me. I've had the bag since before New Year's at least. I am lucky that I can have one and be fine. I know some people can't stop once they get going with sweets. Anyway, last night I melted one and dipped my banana into it as I ate it for dessert. Some how the banana makes the chocolate taste even sweeter by comparison. It's awesome! And you get in a fruit serving to boot

Anne, I'm sorry to hear that things aren't going well. But I want to point out that you're totally rocking on exercise! So give yourself a pat on the back, and stick with it. Sugar cravings are tough, as Khris says. Do you think you may have sugar cravings because you're trying to restrict calories too much? Maybe it would be worth increasing your other food a bit so that you aren't so hungry. Just a thought.

Loren Ipsum, we're all about small changes. Even increasing a little bit of water at a time is great! That's a wonderful change. For bedtime, one thing that I've been trying is Sleepytime tea - it has chamomile which is supposedly a gentle herbal sedative. Maybe it's just the placebo effect, but having a cup does help me feel relaxed and ready for bed. Or maybe there's some other way you could have a bedtime ritual that would help you shift to sleeping earlier.

An, congrats on restarting your exercise! That's great.

It's just been a couple days, but I am LOVING the change I've made to include a couple pieces of candy in what I eat each day. It's great to have a small treat, I don't feel so deprived.

Anne, my naturopath has given me magnesium powder to help ward off the sugar cravings - just a thought.

I haven't been checking in because I haven't been doing very well. I finally restarted my running yesterday. I haven't run since nov (eek) when I started the couch to 5k program but fell off the bandwagon. I have been procrastinating since the start of the year. Very sore today but I felt like I had so much more energy for the day. Now to keep it up:-p

I'm going well food wise at the moment but I don't seem to be able to find a happy medium. I'm either being really good or really bad!

Thanks, thunalata and Kari for the suggestions. I'm going to try smaller steps. I've got to re-introduce water into my life. The water bottle is helping. Kari, I agree that the type of bottle does make a difference. I like the fact that it has a lid. I used to pour water into a glass and not touch it after that for some reason. Today I've filled my bottle three times. It's a new record for me. If I can't make this water bottle work, I'll look into the straw cup Kari suggested. As for getting to bed earlier, I did have an earlier Monday night, but it was still too late. Maybe tonight I can best my bedtime by 15 minutes. If I want a chance at that, though, I'm going to have to get ready for bed now!

if you're looking to jazz up the figs, you could stuff them with soft goat cheese (prosciutto wrapping optional) for apps or mascarpone for dessert.

of course, this makes figs ever so much healthier!

Not going well here at all.
Not too bad on the exercise fron. On Wed I managed a pump class, body balance class and 30 mins on the treadmill, with another pump class on Sat. Planned to start running this morning but misset the alarm (pm instead of am, a not uncommon mistake)

Weight up again, no doubt due to a complete lack of self control. Don't know if it the heat or the stress, but I have almost been binging. (funnily enough, given comments above, it is often on weetbix with sugar- had 3 after our evening meal tonight) I clearly have an issue with sugar in general and finished up my supply of dark brown sugar today - which I can and do eat by it self. I don't really want to go cold turkey on sugar for ever, but sometimes I need to have a few days off it to sort of re set myself. I am not sure I am able to do that right now.

LI, it sounds like you are making good progress already even if you aren't where you ultimately want to be. That's great that you are carrying around a water bottle as motivation to drink more. One of the things that helps me get a lot of liquids in throughout the day is carrying around something like this - I find that having a straw makes me more motivated to drink rather than having to unscrew the top of a water bottle. The type of bottle *shouldn't* really make a difference, but in my experience it does. I guess I'm just lazy like that. I try to drink enough during the work day that I fill it up at least 3 times. Starting out the day with a few cups of tea before I leave for the office also helps me stay more hydrated.
Just a few suggestions in case you aren't already doing this!

LI - if you're struggling, can you think of a way of helping yourself? Break it into smaller steps?
Eg for getting more sleep, choose the latest bedtime you normally ever have and set yourself the target of being in bed 15 mins before that. Also work out how long it takes you to get to bed - I bet it's longer than you think! I need to get to bed earlier now and need to start 'going to bed' at least 30mins earlier than bedtime.
For drinking water, give yourself a small target that you can't fail to meet and go from there.

Raw almonds rock! If you have a Big Lots nearby they always have a 16oz tin and it's only $2.50 here in FL. They're sweet tasting unlike the salted roasted variety. I never knew until a couple months ago.

At the beginning of Healthy Habits, I said I wanted to get more sleep and drink more water. I'm struggling most with these two things. I really should try to go to bed early at least one night a week, but I haven't done it yet. Maybe, because I'm thinking about it now, tonight will be the night.

I've been drinking more water than I have in the past since I purchased a double-walled stainless steel bottle, but it's not as much as I should be drinking in a day. I'm drinking half of what I should be drinking on a regular day. I didn't think "drink more water" was going to be as hard a habit to make as I'm finding it.

My Zumba class is going great and I'm getting a great workout at least once a week. I drink the most water on the day I have my class.

Raw almonds and raisins are now on my snack list.

I'm back to do my check-in. I had an OK week. My weight is down 1/2 pound from last week, but given all the weird fluctuations I've had lately I'm not sure if that means anything.

I had a good week for exercise, although I felt pretty tired. I did crossfit twice, yoga three times, and went for a long run (for me at the moment that's an hour of running) on Sunday. In terms of food it was less good, I had quite the chocolate overdose on Valentine's Day. This did make me realize that I think I've been expecting too much to think that I won't have sweets at all, and I'm going to start building them in as planned treats to avoid feeling so deprived. That's what I'm trying this week.

Those Kashi bars sound good. I like their honey almond flax bars too. The Fiber One 90 calorie bars are a decent way for me to satisfy a sweet craving, as is a handful of one of the Archer Farms trail mixes from Target (yogurt, raisin, pecan & berries is pretty yummy). I also try to pass up ice cream in favor of yogurt as an after-dinner snack.

My week went well and I'm starting to get excited. As of today I'm 4 lbs from my goal weight!

The sweet snack I've discovered is Kashi Dark Chocolate and Coconut bars. yum! They have a layer of chocolate over the top and are just the right amount of sweet.

Raw Almonds and Dried Mission Figs

You always hear about how great almonds are for you, but I didn't really care for them until I tried them raw. My grocery store sells them in a bulk bin, so they are less expensive, and they are better for you raw anyway- no salt, no oil. The dried figs are also available at my grocery in the bulk bins. They are sweet, but not too sweet, and just the right size for a little something.

Elly---it's good to hear that you got good results from your tests and you can move on and despite the fact your doc told you there not much more to do. Your peace of mind is invaluable especially when still feeling like you're dying. I am curious if you were actually told WHAT you have--did they give you a name--hope this is not too personal or painful to speak about. I ask because, from what I've read here, I have experienced similar heart stuff also that have caused me feel like I'm either dying or fading somehow (like brown outs). Late night fades while asleep waking up in panics or panics as a result of what--sudden blood pressure drops I don;t know and the ER doesn't find anything either. I have been trying to figure it out for prob 25 yrs--have had many tests and all I have figured out is that Halter Monitors are the best cure for what ever I have coz nothing happens when I'm hooked up despite trying my best (Frustration LOL). I have been told to go out and exercise but it takes soo long to recover that it messes up the family life and I feel like crap for days and the whole fact that it scares me. I played high cardio sports like ice hockey (Ringette, ball hockey) and always rode a bike but now it's all I can do to get up the guts to go walking for fear of passing out -and that hasn't happened but feel like I've been on the cusp so I get your feelings and concerns--this has to be hard living on your own like this!!! I hope you have people around you who know your concerns and check on you just because it's hard to handle sometimes and I know I hate to be alone when I'm having a bad episode. Keep up the good work and hope you grow stronger by the day!!

Sorry that so many of you are not feeling well. This makes it much harder to stay on track. Last week was difficult in terms of schedule and I stopped keeping my food diary, but despite it all my measurements are going down. Hello semi-flat stomach! (Waistline is proving resistant to change.)

I've been doing exercises for my plantar fasciitis and other foot problems for about 2 months now and they are working. (Struggling with the p.f. for over two years. The exercises the podiatrist recommended only made it worse.)

So I did what any sensible woman would do with feet that feel better: I bought some new shoes for them!

Chewy, I don't have links for you offhand, but I did some research last year when I was diagnosed with fibroids and an ovarian cyst. The cyst went away on its own -- when I went for a follow-up ultrasound three months after the original test, it was gone. So I hope you have the same experience!

I have some mild symptoms of the fibroids (mainly heavy, painful crampy periods, blech), and considering the largest one is the size of a small orange, I think I'm pretty darn lucky. I turn 46 this year and have no idea how close I am to menopause, but I suspect that some of the stuff happening with me are indications of perimenopause. It's a strange thought, because in my head, I am NOT old enough to be approaching that stage of life!

This weekend I had my first training session in preparation for running a half-marathon in June. I can't believe I'm doing this. I am SO not a runner. But my first day went well. I did five miles, alternating brisk walking with running. I think my running totalled about a mile, and I've been feeling it since (sore legs and even sore abs!), but I actually like that soreness because it tells me I've worked my muscles!

I was sick last week as well. I managed one normal workout before succumbing to the germ plague. I did force myself onto the scale and my weight hasn't changed. I guess that's a good thing. I thought I'd be up for sure--planning to get back on schedule tomorrow. Maybe even get in a day on the slopes : ) Hope everyone else has a good President's week!

Elly, I'm glad you got good news from the doc, and I hope they find a way to help you feel better, too!

I was sick, sick, sick last week, and it was particularly discouraging because my weight just went up, up, up while I was sick. But yesterday I finally felt better and the scale went down to a new low, so that was good!

Still loving the new boot camp/trainer and hope to get in two sessions of each in the coming week, plus two tap classes!

Oh Lisa- the kids and I have been watching Drop Dead Diva on Netflix, too! Actually, we just finished it. Too bad only one season is available. Have you watched The IT Crowd? It's a British comedy, but it would be another good one for watching/exercising (although shorter- you'd have to do two episodes).

Lisa not sure whether this is any lower in calories but lately when I get a sweet tooth moment I've been eating a handful of cherios (breakfast cereal) and raisins, seems to give me the sweet taste I desire I just hope it's lower in calories than chocolate x

Sorry no links to recommend but at least you know what to look for and another pound down is great Khris!

I've been sticking to working out at home after work. Two days of weight lifting and 3 days of my mini stepper. I've been watching Drop Dead Diva from Netflix while I step which really helps the time pass.

Eating hasn't been as good. I've noticed I have quite a sweet tooth and haven't found a good replacement for my mini bites of truffles, reeses cups etc. I tried chocolate pudding but it's not the same. I don't think I'll see any weight loss until I figure out a chocolate alternative with less calories.

I have started eating fish once a week. I buy the ready to cook options in the store during my weekly food shopping. It's a step up from fish sticks. :)

Elly-yay for finding a tennis ball solution!

Sounds good so far! Chewy, can't help you with the pre-menopause issue. My mother is turning 48 this year, and strangely enough has started having completely normal menstrual cycles and regular ovulation for the first time in her life.

I got my tests back for heart failure and my levels were slightly elevated but I am not, dying which is very good! Unfortunately, I get to continue to feel like I am dying. Basically my cardiologist said that there isn't much more he can do to treat the symptoms and to come back in September. Ugh--

I got my same two workouts in. One went really well and the other I really struggled with, but that is life I guess. Anyway, we found a solution to my cardio problem and it should be an improvement from here. Instead of getting sore I get muscle knots, but with a little tennis ball rolling they are improving. I am going to try my darndest to get a couple extra cardio sessions in this week.

Food wasn't the best for me this past week. Not sleeping enough makes me crave sugar and I can't go to bed until nearly midnight (because of a medication I am on) and then am being woken at 5:15, 6:30, and 7:30 when the people I live with are up and leave the house but I can't get out of bed until 8-- same medication.

Once again I am trying to ward off a cold. I think the couple I lived with have come down with it because there is sneezing and coughing and general "man-cold" grumpiness floating around. I really hope that they can fight it off before it becomes full blown though, because my immune system is so weak that I get anything anyone brings home. That is why I gave up roommates in college. I lived in an apartment with 4 girls and caught everything that each one of them (and their boyfriends) brought home. I had twelve viruses that year and I had each one from two weeks to a month. It really messed with my classes because I couldn't get out of bed for days each time without passing out.

Going well! I lost another pound this week- Yay!
I missed two of my Yoga classes last week (more appointments), but managed to make up one, and I walked on the treadmill for 25 minutes before one class. I should be able to make all three of my Yoga classes this week, and walk before them. If I'm lucky, I can add a fourth.
I went back to the gynecologist to get the results of my tests. My enlarged uterus is fine, but I do have some cysts on my ovaries. They are just the 'simple' kind, which are common and usually shrink up on their own. I have to go back in 6 weeks for another untrasound to check them. Everything else was fine, but I am starting to think that many of my seemingly unrelated issues are related to pre-menopause. I am starting to look into information about that, so if anyone has links I'd appreciate them.
Hope everyone had a good week!

I'm at a standstill, literally, so I am concentrating on counting calories and keeping the intake below my current burn rate of about 1500 or 1600. I am trying to see this as a week or two break for my body
