Elly and Theresa - sending hugs your way and hoping to hear good news from both of you soon. Theresa - the change in my youngest after he had his adenoids removed and gromits inserted was so worth the trauma of surgery on such a little one. Good luck!

Kari - well done - you are an inspiration, you look great and your skin is glowing in your wiws.

Medusa and MsMaven - good luck with the travelling - another vote for carrying snax - almonds and bottled water work for me!

Anne - it's so hard to get motivated to move (and sweat!) when its hot and no one is sleeping well. Good luck! Could you add some extra swimming until it cools down a bit?

Malina, its a good suggestion to try to do some exercise, it seems strange to go from such a high level of training to being 'grounded'! Shame to lose all those endorphin thingies! Speaking of which, it sounds like Mary is hooked on them already :)

We spent a few days away this week so we were eating out a lot. It was the first time we had tried going away since my husband's been ill, and we had mixed success. He enjoyed it, we got to see Oslo, in nearby Norway, but he had to rest a lot, so guess who kept 3 very busy kids active? AND had a major dose of PMT? AND came back feeling tired and grumpy But all is well that ends well - everyone enjoyed the trip in spite of my crankinesst, and I managed to do lots of walking to make up for missing the gym....sorry for the novella, girls!

Mo, sorry to hear about your injury! That's rough. I've been on crutches in the past and I survived by going to the gym and doing every upper body exercise I could think of - pull-ups, dips, weight machines, anything that uses arms. Maybe you could do some things lying down as well, like situps? Some gyms also have bicycle-like machines that you pedal with your arms. This sounds (and looks) ridiculous but at least it's exercise...

You're doing really well to be so upbeat about it all, Malina! Good for you and hope you recover quickly and work out how to reset your goals for now.

Medusa - don't worry about the Hershey's kisses. Easily done and why not enjoy them? We're in this to establish long term healthy habits and a few chocolates along the way won't hurt.

I've been away on family holiday since Monday and have had recklessly excessive amounts to eat and drink. But I'm feeling refreshed so time to jump back in where I was! Enjoy the memory of those chocolates and jump back in too!

I'm late to the party but most of you know by now I sprained my ankle falling off a bike on Valentine's Day. At least I had 33,000 steps on Sunday thanks to my half marathon! I'm now getting maybe 1,000 "steps", or hops really, a day. Add to the injury the fact that we were on vacation in a food lover's town and I wasn't surprised to come home with 2 extra pounds. But as of today, I am back to square one.
I had a good week last week although it was taper time in my training which meant less workouts. And my nightly pushups I've been doing are a big help now that I have to drag myself around with my upper body strength!
Food has been decadent and the wine has been flowing all last weekend so now is the time to concentrate on healthier intake since I can't really do much in the exercise department.
I'm hoping by next week to be able to either swim or use the exercise bike. I can't just sit on the couch for weeks on end!!

Thanks for posting, everyone! This is fantastic, very inspiring.

I had a mini-binge of Valentine's Day candy yesterday to the tune of about 20 Hersheys' Kisses. Not the end of the world, but I feel pretty bummed about it.

I've been loosely tracking my calorie intake since early January, and yesterday I put on a dress for Valentines dinner with my husband and I could swear it fits looser than it did when I bought it a few months ago (it was the first time I'd worn it).

I don't own a scale, and I don't want one. I know good and well when my clothes are starting to feel more snug. I've mainly just been paying attention to portion sizes and staying away from sweets and fried food. My exercise routine has taken a hit lately but I'm about to get back on track because I've signed up to train for a half-marathon in June! It's crazy, I'm so not a runner! But I wanted a challenge, and I'll be raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

I'm very lucky that I've been able to eat pretty much whatever I want my whole life and not gain huge amounts of weight, but after hitting 40, it's become apparent to me that I need to be more careful, because weight creeping up by a couple of pounds a year turns into gaining a dress size every 5 years.

Having lost both parents to heart disease, however, is one of my biggest motivators for healthy habits. I try to stay active, manage stress, and eat in moderation.

2 steps forward, 2 steps back. last thurs I was 0.1kg off my goal, now I am back to 0.8 above it.

I completed my 3.6km swim about 10 days ago so and now need to work out my normal fitness plan. My initial idea was to spend wed morning at the gym, put my daughter in the creche and do body Pump, Body Balance and swim before going in with her for her swimming lesson at 12:05. I found this pretty exhausting, Swimming is harder after weight lifting and the child swimming lesson unexpectedly hard on the mother! I am going to try it again tomorrow, but possibly substitute the treadmill for the swim.
I went to a step class on mon but haven't fitted much more exercise in and am finding it hard to do so. School is back and I have to get up early just to get the 2 older girls ready, let alone work out! The nights are hot and the children unsettled and getting enough sleep is hard right now. Plus all my term time activities are back up and so are DH's work commitments which keep him busy a few nights a week.

Food is going well some of the time, but I really fall when we have guests to eat, which is pretty frequently!

Sounds like everyone is doing fairly well considering it is February. Traveling can be hard, but for me after a couple of days of eating out I start craving veggies and you can't pry me away from a salad. Drat my mother for her evil plan to get her children hooked on vegetables!

Thank you for your supportive thoughts Kari. This is all kind of a shock to me because I don't have any history of heart problems in my family and while I have been dealing with a pre-existing condition, it is very very rare for it to cause CHF--- hopefully the tests come back negative.

Theresa-- Hopefully you will get a break from all the illness you guys have been dealing with after Georgie's tonsilectomy. I hope you all heal up quick.

Barbara--- my dad started telling people that he eats cheetos and watches dirty movies with the dogs when the rest of the family leaves when I was about 17. Maybe that'll cure ya! It didn't work on me though, I still love me some cheetos. That is ok though, because I don't like or eat chips, so cheetos are the only temptations/occasional thing in that category.

Ms Maven, I carry protein bars in my purse when I'm traveling. Target has some that aren't that bad, all things considered. I like the Pure Protein or Protein Plus brands. Or if you can't stomach that, you can carry some nuts and/or dried fruit in a baggie. I'm partial to almonds and macadamia nuts, and dried apricots. And maybe some Babybel cheeses -- they hold up well in your purse for even a couple of days.

No weight movement but I'm still cooking more at home, in fact hubby and I decided to pass on going out to dinner for Valentine's day or purchasing chocolate for each other this year. Flowers are far less calories. I've been sticking to an at home routine of my elliptical (it's a tiny one with no arms, great for balance, tee hee) and free weights. I've gotten hooked on using my Netflix account to catch up on movies. It takes me 3 days to do one movie but my legs are nice and sore afterwards.

Medusa and others who are dealing with a temporary stall or gain - I just wanted to add a little encouragement. I'm trying to keep this perspective in mind: the point of healthy habits is not to lose weight every week. (Actually, for me, weight loss isn't even the primary goal, even though it feels really good.) My goal in terms of weight loss is to average weight loss over the space of a month. There are some weeks (see my post above) where I *know* I will be heavier, and other weeks that are easier to lose weight in, and that's just the way it goes. But if I'm losing weight, gaining strength, moving more, and improving my eating habits overall, *then* I'm achieving my goal.
I hope that helps somewhat. Hang in there - and thank you for your encouragement towards me.

Elly, I'm so sorry that the tests haven't brought you any closure or information yet. Many, many thoughts and prayers for you. Two of my family members have had very serious congestive heart failure (both women had it as an after-effect of a certain kind of chemotherapy for breast cancer, more than a year after remission) and heart disease isn't really a stranger to either side of my family. I'll be thinking of you and hope you get well and stay strong.

I've had a relatively good week. Last week was hard - it was my time of month (or in my case, every 3 months) and by last Monday my weight was waaay up, as it always is around that time.

However, by this Monday I was back down and then some. As of yesterday, I've lost 12 pounds since January 1. I also took advantage of some free promotional Hot Yoga classes that a local yoga studio was offering - each are 90 minutes long, and they are pretty intense - so took one yesterday and one today. I can't afford to do it all the time in addition to my gym membership, but maybe a few days a month.

I've met my exercise goals since Jan. 1 and have done pretty well on eating and food tracking for the last few weeks. There are a couple days where I forget to log my food intake, but I'm very careful those days to load up on "power foods" (low fat/low calorie/low carb foods that are on a Weight Watchers list) so that I know I'm not overdoing it. I even did pretty well while going out for Italian food this weekend for a Valentine's day dinner. I ordered pasta filled with gorgonzola cheese and pears, but it was a small, reasonable portion (I ate half that night and half for lunch today), and I paired it with a salad with low-fat viniagrette dressing.

My big challenge is that in a couple weeks, my boyfriend (who is also doing Healthy Habits with me) and I are traveling with some friends. We won't have a car or a grocery store within walking distance, so we'll virtually be eating out for nearly every meal. However, the hotel we're staying at does have a mini-fridge in every room (whew!) so I think I'm going to stow some fruits/veggies that would survive the plane trip (apples, oranges, bananas, snap peas, carrots, broccoli), oatmeal, and crackers to make sure we have *some* healthy food to snack on. I'm prepared to do some splurging during those few days, but in a reasonable way, and will bring my laptop so I can log my food intake.

You girls are all doing really well despite your obstacles - I'm very proud!

Me, not so much last week I ended up going back downhill, and am now on abx, and just plain exhausted after the girls home from school sick, and trying to recover. And now, it's only 1 week and Georgie is having her tonsils out, so again, I'll be having to care for her and having a night in hospital with her.

Part of me thinks I should hold off on trying to do anything until after G's surgery because, assuming all goes to plan, once she has this done and recovers, she will be a much happier and healthier little person, so the likelihood of me having to care for her (and catching so many of the bugs she brings home!), should reduce.

But I feel like that might just be a reason to not do anything.

So, I'm just going to potter along, eating as well as I can, keeping up my re-established good sleeping habits, until next week is over.

I guess these are the challenges of single-parenting a family with young children!!

I've been good again. Dang, this is getting kind of boring! Bring on the Cheetos (just kidding!) Using my elliptical is so much fun, I don't even consider it a workout.

Kelly, you would be terrified of my balance beam scales! They are scary accurate.
I weigh myself every other Wednesday - first thing in the morning. Since I usually eat what I want on the weekends, within reason, I NEVER weigh on Monday morning.

L-A-Z-Y, I ain't got no alibi! Really slipped on the food front these last few weeks. I need to get back on board. DD's have some new after school activities and all of the running around has made me lazy about taking the time to cook. Exercise is about the only thing with which I'm consistent--I guess that's one good thing. I haven't weighed in a couple of weeks--how pathetic that a grown woman is afraid of the scale! Does anyone else have scale phobia?

Travel is definitely my biggest challenge as far as gaining weight. If anyone has the secret to staying with healthy and moderate eating while tired, hungry, and in an unfamiliar place, please post.

Almost at my goal, but a glass of wine and munching cashews put me back up this morning. I'm going back to "no wine" for a few more weeks.

I spent the weekend working in the yard, planting and cleaning up before the next round of rain storms that began this morning. No aches and pains and not a lot of stiffness, so I am getting in better shape. Yoga is helping. My feet don't hurt either--a major step forward. I've been doing exercises from The Sports Medicine Bible, a book we've had for 15 years. I've been doing them for a couple of months now, and I'm seeing improvement. The ones the podiatrist gave me only made the problems worse.

I am so in love with my new boot camp/trainer that I can hardly stand it! Last week I did two private training sessions and one boot camp and I just loved it -- and by "loved it," I mean "it was total torture but I felt amazing once it was over!" Seriously, this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for and I am just beside myself with excitement!

This week my schedule is two training sessions, two boot camp classes, and two tap classes. Gotta love it!

Foodwise, things are not awesome. This week was my BFF's birthday and we had drinks or dinner FOUR times during the week. Yikes. So the scale is up a bit, but my clothes continue to get bigger. Go figure.

I really want to get below 120 lbs by my one-year surgiversary on March 17 so I am officially cutting WAY back on the calories to see if I can make it.

Going well!

I'm trying to decide how much I want to avoid the empty calories of Valentine's Day candy... I usually stop by Safeway a day or two after the big candy holidays (Halloween, Easter, etc) and buy a thing or two on discount. Completely unnecessary, not helpful for my health, but it's a nice (and cheap) splurge, and I'm young enough (and do it infrequently enough) that it never seems to set me back that much. So we'll see what my willpower is like in a few days.

I'm still having a hard time getting my 3 Yoga classes in because of doctor's and other appointments. I am missing again today, but I am going to try and do the Tuesday night class as a make up. I've also arranged for my sitter to come a little earlier so that I can get on the treadmill for 20 minutes or so before class. That adds an hour of cardio per week for me, and I need it. At this point, I don't know if I will manage to get swimming at all, but if I can do the hour on the treadmill and 3 yoga classes a week I will be happy. I lost another pound this week- yay!

Well, I went to both my secessions last week but struggled for the first time since we started, especially the second secession. Part of the problem might be because the gym had a problem with one of the pieces of cardio equipment I was using (there are two identical pieces) so they removed them both and replaced them with other machines I can't use, so we have been trying to come up with something else to get cardio and a good warm up in and have yet to find something that doesn't kill.

My thyroid and iron and all those other levels came back normal. So far the new medication the doc put me on has been making me less dizzy, which is great. On the other hand, some of my other symptoms have increased. With the recent "out of nowhere" weight gain I now hit 8 out of the big 10 symptomatic markers for chronic heart failure, so the doc is concerned and testing for that. I should get some results back today. Woohoo, happy valentine's day to me!

Travel makes routines so difficult. It sounds like you did very well considering the circumstances. I've been eating more greens. (Any suggestions for collards?) The early morning exercise just isn't happening yet. If only I could be checking YLF and walking a treadmill at the same time!

Well done! Don't give up - I know how disheartening it can feel at times. I've had a slower week this week and am not adding anything new to my habits - we're away for a few days anyway.

It's a good time perhaps to remember that it's not all about weight loss and that your body measurements will probably be changing.

Hang in there!

Welcome to today's Valentine's day check-in. How did things go this week?

I had a reasonably good week despite traveling for another interview - I did crossfit twice and yoga twice. My weight has jumped up again this week, but it's probably just water. I am feeling really tired from all this travel and so am pretty discouraged. I know this will pass but it's hard right now.
