@runcarla, I am in the gym for 2 to 2-1/2 hours 2x's a week doing my most intense training and another 2 to 3 days where I concentrate mostly on foundational fitness which includes cardio.

I spoke with another woman there who is 50 and in amazing shape who trains very hard. She has a protein shake as well as a sports drink, plus some jellybeans (for releasing sugar quickly if needed). She works with a nutritionist who recommended this and the woman claims that she has so much more energy while working out and afterwards.

I bought some Gatorade G2 (less sugar than regular Gatorade) and a grass fed no-flavor whey protein powder that I will add to the Gatorade and see how that works. I do have a Chobani yogurt about 1/2 before my workout. I also bought some Brookside chocolate covered blueberries that her nutritionist said could also be used for a quick release of sugar.

How long are you in the gym, Danusia? I have water during workouts, and then something small but protein dense within half an hour. Weight training sessions are routinely 90min and cardio (swimming, biking) an hour. My weight training coach believes in eating something small as soon as possible post workout - preferably within 15min. My running/cardio coach advised that water is fine for anything under an hour, but to supplement if going longer. (I hate conventional supplements so pack a few dates for long cardio days.) His first homework assignment when I started with him was to read 'Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Handbook'. It is an excellent book full of wisdom and common sense.

Post workout blender shake with fruit, milk, and protein powder (fermented vegan proteins) or Greek yogurt, fruit, and a high protein (nuts) granola are my usual post workout meals.

Addendum: asked my trainer about protein during workout and he volunteered that women and 'seniors' often don't take in enough protein and that your trainer probably wants you to get some easily recruitable protein during a longer workout or when you won't be able to eat something soon after your workout. ...then he used the opportunity to lecture me on my low protein intake! LOL!

@danusia Water. There is some benefit to drinking whey before, during, and after lifting, but it’s neglible for casual lifters. I do have a protein shake near-daily but that’s because my protein intake is otherwise low.

Glad that your post partum exam went well!

My trainer told me that I am moving into my next phase of training of actually building muscle (I thought that was what I was doing??) and that he wants me to bring a sports drink and add 20 gms of whey protein to sustain me through these workouts instead of just the water I bring.

I have to admit, I am truly amazed at the progress I have made since starting this journey 14 months ago. My body continues to transform and while the journey has not been easy, I feel inspired and motivated to keep doing it. At almost 62 years, I am the strongest I have ever been and feel doing what I am doing will help me stay strong as I get even older

@gradfashionista - may I ask what you drink during your workouts ?

I posted on the last thread so cutting and pasting here
"Here it is winter and has been very rainy. I had lost a lot of motivation recently and missed several days of running partly because of hurting myself a bit, not warming up on a cold morning. I've mostly been making it to the gym twice a week and have a new program - the first "leg" day took me 5 days to recover from!

Weight is horrible. Up high and totally because of over eating. No self control"
Weight is probably over what is was when I joined YLF 10 years ago - and then I was a few months postpartum.(with 3rd child) . In fact almost what I weighed 1 week postpartum! Have around 10 pounds to lose to get back to prepregnancy weight

Yesterday I skipped another run (due to incipient cold) but decided to go on a strict "no eating between meals" regime. Not currently restricting amounts or types of foods eaten at meals - it's just a first step, and hard enough for me at the moment. Am looking forward to the days getting longer and starting to cycle to work again - maybe a month to go.

*Thrill of the week*. Shared a swim lane with an olympic trials athlete. I don't know her event, but the lifeguard told me she placed 3rd and #1 and #2 went to the olympics. When she arrived after the start of the lane swim, the lifeguard sent her to the lane DS#2 and I were using, because we knew good lane etiquette and were circular swimming. (Ours is a small, but beautiful community pool. The swimmer was in town visiting family, and had a 5000m workout to do!)

On a roll and hitting the the gym for weights 3 X a week.

Food is easy - the produce at the farmers market is amazing. Niagara peaches, early apples, corn on the cob, green beans, sweet peppers, tomatoes, etc. Yum!

Well done GF on the lifting - your cautious but determined approach seems to be paying off. I found post partum walking and yoga were fantastic along with body weight exercises. And greedy sons helped too!!

I have been working hard to exercise since April. I am doing something every day - three gym workouts, two runs and two walks. I fit in yoga as well (but not so far this week). I am feeling fitter and stronger.

Eating wise I have been ravenous and not been as disciplined as I was earlier - but still okay. Not much sugar in general and not much wine (but some).

The Cat - mountain walking is good for the body and the soul. And the fact you slept so well shows how good it was for you.

Good to hear you are feeling OK.

My week was great. I did a lot of walking, visiting people in a remote area and telling them about the wonderful hope that the Bible gives for the future: We have the possibility of living forever on a paradise earth, where sickness and death will be no more. (Revelation 21:3, 4. More info at this website: https://www.jw.org/en)

In addition, I walked for hours in the mountains, on rough, almost non-existing, paths. Excellent exercise for my back. And the breathtaking beauty of the views from mountain tops feels very healthy also for the mind. Bonus: Slept like a child all night long.

We are approaching the middle of the month and while the daylight tells me that’s it’s August, the humidity and stormy weather feel more like May.

Health-wise, I had my six-week postpartum check-up and felt encouraged by it—no prolapse,
and very minor diastasis recti right above the navel. I had used myself as a guinea pig in structuring my exercise routine during pregnancy and was worried about it backfiring—either by worsening diastasis recti (abdominal separation) and/or prolapse from heavy lifting. Both are very common among women, but women who exercise can worsen these conditions by creating too much pressure against their abs or pelvic floor. The changes I incorporated, such as piston breathing, being mindful of my pelvic floor during exercise, avoiding overt abdominal work, etc., seemed to have helped, and I only need to be concerned about kegels for the time being.

In the absence of prolapse, I felt comfortable trying a workout again and spent an hour lifting over the werkend. I squatted 3.5.135lb and tried out a 155lb and 175lb single. The 175lb felt like
an actual one rep max (ie very tough), so I’ll stop at 155lb-165lb next time. The movement still feels a bit foreign and wobbly, and I’m not sure how much of that is due to lack of practice vs relaxin.

I did a few sets of bench press, dumbbell overhead press, leg press, cable rows and rope pull-downs before calling it a day and heading home. Other than that, no other workouts to report.

How was your week?
