@cheryle: lol--I'm a jogger too especially anything over a mile!
@anne: I'm just starting back running after a long hiatus. My times are improving but it's slow going--the older I get, the harder it is to come back (applies to lots of things, I think!) Just to clarify, my mile time is the fastest that I can run one mile before I pass out. I haven't been practicing--I'm running a timed mile once a month just to track improvement. My 5K times are usually in the 27 minute range and I'm ready to pass out after that too. I can't seem to bust through that plateau. Good luck on your 25 minute 5K--that sounds like a great goal to shoot for!

Cheryle, I have taken on your suggestion re cauliflower rice and will give it a try (I had seen lots of recipes for it around a few months ago, and not paid attention, because cauliflower is expenseve here when not in season. Now, in winter, they are about $2 ea, which is about as cheap as they will get) I stocked up while shopping yesterday

I am returning to this thread to say I am now NOT on track again. I am finding the cold weather (well what we call cold, it was 3 degrees celcius when I got up this morning) a bit hard, and have cooked polenta porridge with milk the last few days (and had bread with my soup yesterday). At least I had it without sugar and it is pretty filling. I am thinking of just giving up on this "not eating grains and dairy except socially" thing - or at least until spring.

Kellygirl I AM interested in your running time, and I had to go and find a mile/km conversion chart to make sense of them. In my eyes you are seriously fast and I am very impressed!! Is your mile time just for a mile or do you keep up that pace for the 5km? I am pretty slow myself. My goal for the year is to do a 5km under 25 minutes but my best one has been 28 mins something. But even 25 mins would only give me an 8min mile. I also can't take running everyday like you can - I need a day off.

Kellygirl, super job on the run.

Angie, it's nice to get back into the routine after a vacation.

MsMaven, I'm glad you found something that is working for you.

Kiwigal, eating healthy can be hard. Hedev is always pushing goodies on me.

Anne, glad you are back on track.

Dianthus, have you had issues with other mushrooms?

I'm still feeling terrible, no exercise but haven't had much of an appetite so I'm not overindulging. I'm really having an off day today.

Kiwigal, I found a recipe on nom nom paleo site for a spice blend she calls magic mushroom powder. It has dried porcini mushrooms ground, red chili flakes, thyme, and salt. I was doing so well and feeling like I had really firmed up and my tummy had flattened out until I found the mushrooms in a store and started adding this to many dishes. I quit eating it for a week and then tried it again and the next morning, my abdomen was puffed out. It could have been something else but I am not eating dairy or grains so that doesn't leave a lot of other possibles.

Cheryle, I am intrigued what spice is irritating you? Fascinating how different foods affect people in different ways. You have done really well on the whole30 plan, I am impressed by how well Shannon and yourself have navigated it.

Shedev, hope you feel better soon.

Kelly, I am in awe of your time for a mile. I am the world's slowest runner - I should not even call what I do running - so I know how hard that is. I feel good if I get under 10:00 for a mile.

Angie, vacations are so much fun but there is a small price to pay after all the indulgence. Glad you on the track to normal.

Carla, you really are a role model for fitness. You are consistently active and in a big way.

MsMaven, I am glad to hear you have found some relief and sorry to hear you have arthritis in your foot as well as knee. That would be tough.

Kiwi, I too have trouble controlling the sugar and find it takes a good week to break the cravings.

Anne, I am not sure if this would work for you but we found a recipe for cauliflower rice and it is fabulously delicious. You rice cauliflower in a food chopper to the consistency of rice and then include it in a variety of fried rice recipes. My fiance's family loves rice. His daughters prefer it to real rice.

I had a slow week last week and my walking/running was down a fair bit from the week before but I still got out a few times and have done my little run/walks every day since Friday. I stopped eating a spice I had added the last week of whole30 and my stomach flattened back out and my energy level improved in a few days. I ate it again as a test two days ago and my abdomen puffed up again and I lost the energy so I guess it is out now. I am glad to have figured out the issue. I am still eating according to the whole30 plan and even had dinner out without breaking it.

A friend has started issuing fitbit challenges for the weekdays and weekends and I am really finding it motivating. I was just under 20K steps yesterday.

I had a big slip into grain eating on the weekend (On saturday I ate SEVEN GF weetbix, also lots of rice and some dairy and sugar, 3-4 slices of bread on Sun). I think I'm over the resulting weight gain though, with a day back eating better. I've learn that I need to pack more food to eat during the day so that I don't go home so fiercely hungry that I make unwise choices.

I have also spoken with DH and we have agreed to cut down on the amount of rice we eat, as I just find it very hard to eat in moderation. I'm also a bit concerned about how much my kids eat of it, specially one daughter who eats it for breakfast most days as well.

Exercise wise, I went to the gym 2 times last week and did a 5km park run on Sat - my worst time yet, with a stitch and a slight cold that made me feel like my glands were swollen by the end of it. This week I have already been 2 times to the gym (4km treadmill yesterday and spin class today) so hopefully will keep it up.

Take care Shedev.

Well done Kellygirl, I know how hard it is to improve those running times. Angie, I also know how good it feels after a month of indulgence to have some healthier foods Carla, you are so consistent and well done with your triathlon. Ms Maven, good to know what you are dealing with, and have a plan of attack.

Lots of walking and gym sessions for me. Eating has been okay, pretty steady and healthy. Always find the eating harder than the exercise, off to the That Sugar Film in the weekend, finally.

Had annual exam last week. I had X-rays of my left foot. It is giving me more problems and I can see that the shape is changing. Turns out I have some arthritis--this didn't occur to me before as a possibility. Now I go to podiatry.

We also talked about ways I can strengthen my core without irritating the arthritis in my knee--mostly symptom free unless I squat or do most yoga, or my hip bursitis. Swimming would be good but not practical for me. Anyway, came up with a plan that includes leg lifts. So now I'm doing on those and getting stronger and it's working.

I had reached the point where it was hard for me to get out of the back seat of a taxi or rise up from a low seat.

Eating and exercise otherwise good. No more wine until I lose the belly fat.

Hope you feel better, shedev. Summer colds are the worst kind.

Crazy busy at work, so skipped some lunch time workouts. 2 runs, 2 yoga, 1 swim, 1 bike. Finished the week with a 'hybrid' sprint triathlon on Sunday (longer bike, longer run). It was 34 deg. but felt like 42 due to humidity! I do ok with heat, but this was my longest triathlon effort ever - 2 hrs 23 min and 303/382!

Appetite down due to heat . I am struggling with taking in enough H2O during the day.

We've been back for three weeks and have been eating healthy and light food each day. Our tummies feel SO MUCH BETTER after overindulging for a month while on holiday.

Have skipped yoga for a few weeks because of the hectic NAS schedule, but hope to be back on track this week.

Sorry to hear that you are under the weather. It's been humid as heck here too. I'm not used to it and it has made me very lazy! I've been keeping up with my runs but am still stuck at 5k. On the plus side, my weight is the same and my mile time is improved (if anyone is interested--from 7:38 to 7:25. My goal is to get in the 6 minute range even if it's 6:59.)Hope everyone has a great week!
