Janet - it's the usual cherry blossom 10 miler. Dread it because it's so crowded. Love it because it's so flat. Biking will also start up later as Dh and I heading to NYC for our yearly 5 Boro's Tour. Can't wait.

Good luck, Naz! Which race is it? I haven't gotten back into running mode enough to do another half since I had my surgery, almost two years ago! It seems I'm more about the biking these days...but it's all good. Have a great time!

Hi all. It's taper week for me and I'm so glad. It's been hard to strength train and run long mileage at the same time. My legs feel strong and I haven't really run since Sunday but have cross trained with weights and some bicycling. I may run a slow short run tonight and then break until Sunday's race. I hope to break my PR time. Wish me luck!

Janet, I wrote a long post about the merits of weight training vs yoga as an option. Internet connectivity issues ensued, and I lost it! Both can be wonderful additions to a cardio based fitness program, especially when one has performance goals (races or events.). If you can only do one, I would vote for yoga.

Yes a bad week for me food wise. I have been greedy with Easter goodies and guests here, along with pre menstrual bloating I am feeling stodgy. On a six day break from the gym but walked twice and biked once so feeling okay the exercise front. I am disappointed in myself as I lost weight over summer and half of it has crept on again. I don't weigh but know I am about 2kg up.

The truth is as I am ageing it is harder and I need to eat less but I am struggling with this, partly living with three hungry males who like carbs, meat and can easily eat these things, and partly that I am active, hence hungry, and work from home where the fridge is not far away!

Two days of swimming last week and then attended a free trial for group training. I was in so much pain that I wasn't able to exercise for the three days following. My goal moving forward is to swim M/W/F and add weight training T/TH. Diet was good but not great. Trying to stay positive but it is very slow getting these 10-15 pounds off. It has never felt so difficult.

Janet, I can't tell you how much weight training (even minimal, 15 min. sessions at home) can make a difference. I don't think there is any better way at changing the body in a short time. I have minor scoliosis too. The key it seems is "form" - you want to get a book or watch some videos and try to have a mirror available to watch your form. And lifting enough weight to give resistance without hurting yourself. If you have space, an inexpensive weight bench, and a set of free weights (can be bought at places like Academy for about $150) is such a great investment. We've had ours for like 20 years and it's all still going strong and working great. Having it set up and ready at any time makes it much easier to find a few minutes - sometimes even just ten minutes for me. I have not been able to do it for the past couple of months due some other things going on, but I can't wait to get back on it this month.

SF, I have a discrepancy in leg length too (and scoliosis as well), so I am careful about my running and replacing my shoes often, although honestly these days I'm not running much -- I'm much more into cycling.

Last week I got my Fitbit working again (it wouldn't sync at all since I returned to the States from Cuba), so I feel like I have a better handle on my overall activity level. Still trying to get back into my routine after a month of travel and hanging out on the very rainy and muddy ranch, which was not great for my activity level.

Did a 30 mile bike ride yesterday, which seemed to feel harder than it should have. About midway through I realized I was dealing with headwinds! The second half is a slight downhill grade, so that made it much easier. Still, I'm feeling pretty out of shape and the extra 5-ish lbs I acquired over the winter (I don't own a scale, but I can tell from how my clothes are fitting) are really bugging me. My eating habits are neither awful nor that of a model eater. I could stand to make a better effort at avoiding sweets.

I'm glad I'm getting back into training mode. Three months until RAGBRAI! http://ragbrai.com -- A week solid of riding 60-75 miles a day! I'll be in better shape by then. :-D

ETA: I'm thinking about some kind of strength activity to complement all the cycling and help my posture and upper body. I quit our gym membership because it just wasn't getting used that much. I get very bored with weight routines anyway. I will be swimming a few times a week once our pool opens in late May, but that only does so much -- I think I need something with more resistance. was thinking about getting myself to a yoga class again a couple of times a week, since I'm way out of that habit. I saw that Viva has been enjoying a lot of success in toning and losing some inches with barre, and wondered if that would be a good idea. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd welcome those.

Oh, I just realized this is a place where we can talk about our health etc., Hi everyone! I have been diligently working to get back to running ever since I had a femur fracture while training for the Boston marathon in 2009. It's been very difficult because of a leg length discrepancy that altered my gait. Every time I tried to run I experienced pain somewhere, but I have been very slowly building up, and it's working. I'm up to four 30 minute runs per week. My 2015 goal is to run 30 minutes 4-5 days a week with a longer run of 60 minutes on weekends.

This week: three 30 minute runs, one 15 minute run (treadmill for the 30 min runs, the 15 mins were outside on pavement, I'm starting to shift my runs outdoors for S/S)
Pilates five 50 minute workouts

Traveling for a few days so I will bring my Pilates ring toner and one of my workouts from a Stott teacher training course I attended.

Not a great week. We are driving long distances everyday. I try to walk in the am and pm but I haven't been to a Yoga class in a long time. My body feels it. I have done some online Yoga classes but it is not the same as a live class. I am going to add something to my fitness routine when I get home. Right now I do Yoga (Pretty powerful type) and walk close to 10,000 steps a day. I am wanting more. I might do Zumba twice a week or some other fitness class.

I turn 60 in September and I have set a goal for myself. I won't go into that here but I am working on something to make 60 great.

3 runs, 1 swim, 1 bike, and a Hatha Yoga class. Missed one run due to travelling, and haven't made it up yet. Maybe this weekend? Food was very good this week and I am being rewarded by a second week with no gastro issues. Still having troubles with interrupted sleep, but no kitchen raids for so long that I can't remember the last one.

This was me last week - I was up 4 pounds after my work conference. I'm back down now, to a smidge below my pre-conference weight. And I went shopping Thursday and found that I'm in a smaller size that I thought. Now I'm wondering if I should really lose those last 9 pounds - I'm not sure I want to go down another size. I'll keep trying to make wise food choices and work out every day and see what happens, I guess.

Baad week for both food and exercise. I worked 72 hours so I just ran out of time. Vacation next week. Feeling really bloated, up 6 lb in a couple days. It'll pass in a couple days.
