Anne - So far so good. I know I'll eventually have to cut down on the running which will be after my 10-miler on April 5th. I may have to re-start the 5x5 training, but at least I'll get some kind of strength training in.

Thanks Citygirl. Looks intense. Looks hard to reconcile with all the running you're doing though? How are you dealing with that?

Shedev - that is interesting to know and hear - about your arms that is. Did the instuctor say it was a problem?

Anne, I took the ACE fit trainers course a few years ago. We did fitness testing as part of the curriculum. I tested in the 90th percentile for cardio, even though I wasn't doing any cardio, but my arms measured much higher % of bodyfat than I would have expected. I thought of my arms as the slimmer part of me. My instructor said women do store a good amount of fat in their arms.

Ahhh, I keep losing everything I am writing on this thread. This
time I'll cut and paste in

CityGirl - I am glad you are back to biking and (as always)
impressed by your workouts. What is 5x5?

RunCarla - Hope your cold gets better soon

MsMaven - well done

Kiwigal-Thanks for responding to my question about the gym assessment,
Nice to know that I'm not the only one who has been surprised by a gym
assessment. You are right that there's
always room for improvement, and in fact I am not fit by my own standards or (I
would think) by yours. I just expected to be better than my age cohort! I have wondered if my heart rate has
something to do with it. Last year, when I was fitter and was regularly running
intervals on the treadmill, my heart rate used to go up to about 195 at time during
sprints.(ie higher than the "maximum") Mo had similar results - we
discussed it on HH back then.

And on the bodyfat issue, I've never been told a percentage, at
previous assessments, just how I rated in the population. And I probably did do
better then anyway, being younger.

So I've been reading up on what to do if you are "skinny
fat' and the more sensible answers seem to be to do more weight training (which
I don't much like - evidently one pump class most weeks isn't cutting it for me)
and intervals (which I love, so that's good). I can't realistically see myself
losing another 5kg (ie of fat)as I haven't been that weight since I was maybe
16, so I think adding muscle might be a better way to go.

I have my first free session with the trainer and really enjoyed
it. He got me do some things l'd never done before (including what I suppose
are "assisted" pullups) and to improve something I had done and was
really clear.

As for the rest - I think I got in my 3 "mostly" runs
last week, plus one spin and half a pump class. Eating was affected by PMS but
I kept to my restrictions and just ate more in general and it the weight gain was only
temporary and is down now. I have
finished my 4 weeks of hardly any dairy, and am going to introduce yoghurt once
I have made some - probably tomorrow which I am really looking forward to. Am trying to sustain (and keep on) with
weight loss, so my introductions are going to be gradual. I did have icecream 2
times in the 4 weeks as a planned eating- at-others exception and had no
problems at all so I don’t anticipate any digestive issues.

We finally had our first warm day yesterday (Sunday) since last week's major snow storm and now Spring fever is in the air. When that happens, I tend to up my exercise and change my eating habits.

Last week I focused on eating a bit healthier and staying within my target calorie goals. I also exercised more, especially catching up on my 10-miler training.

This week, I have a load of exercise scheduled, plus watching my food intake and increasing protein.

Sun: Long run of 7 miles

Mon: HIIT/ Abs class and finally biked to work (last time was in November). Today was supposed to be my rest day.

Tue: rolling hills 4-5 mile run on treadmill

Wed: easy recovery run of 4-6 mile run

Thur: strength training doing the 5x5 method, interval run of 4-7 miles

Fri: rest day.

Sat: 5x5 strength, easy recovery run of 4-6 miles.

Thanks Shedev for these threads.

Anne, I sometimes wonder about these gym assessments. You certainly look healthy and in shape. I had an experience like this about 20 years ago at the gym when I was in reasonable shape and it has put me off ever doing them again. I am sure most of us have room for improvement. Also bodies store weight in different places naturally as we all know so how is it helpful to comment where you store yours. Anyway, rant over, don't let this get you down, you look wonderful and are going to the gym to get stronger and fitter and healthier.

I was tired last week, and skipped one workout. Food was okay, exercise was also okay but nothing spectacular. Decided to listen to my body though and as a result do feel much stronger this week, I had been doing hard gym sessions and needed an easier week!

I haven't been very hungry this week--the opposite of the week before. A good thing because I've been sitting a lot. No exercise the last three days, except for chasing turkeys out of the yard so that the ducks can eat. (They aren't my ducks--they are wild but they know me and are pretty tame around me.) At least living on the edge here gets me to move a bit.

Also happy to say that waistline and weight has gone down. I'm almost to goal range.

Next week will be better: I'm almost done with my article that is due next weekend. (The reason I've been glued to my chair all week.) I'm going to reward myself once I get it turned in--time to go shopping!

We had ice and snow that kept me from the gym but I managed to go swimming two days and then went to Philadelphia Flower Show and walked all day long (I think this counts as exercise). Weight is maintaining. Still not see any losses but I believe I just haven't been able cut back on carbs and calories. Feeling a little frustrated but I know I have lost these extra pounds before and I should be able to do it again! Thanks for the post.

I'm reposting this from the end of last weeks threads as id love to hear if others have had this experience .
Just checking back in after a somewhat depressing appraisal at the gym at my workplace. Turns out I have below average fitness and my fat percentage is at the high end of acceptable for my age (though wouldn't be so bad if I was younger, apparently). And while my BMI and waist/ratio are fine, the extra fat is in my arms! I always thought my arms were too big. I get 5 free PT sessions, so we'll see what improvements I can make!
