I hear you on the old-lady posture, MsMaven. I usually sit on a stool in the exam room and my default is a slouch. 2 things help me avoid this: 1. sitting on an exercise ball for part of my computer/desk time and 2. doing Pilates--even 2 mornings of a 7-minute routine is enough to remind my muscles how good it feels to sit up tall, and then when I slouch it just feels wrong and I instinctively straighten/tighten my core.

The last few weeks/months have been strange--I keep losing and gaining the same 3-4 pounds. These are the pounds that settle on my abdomen. Usually in September I'm at my lowest weight of the year. I've been keeping up with exercising and I feel stronger now than at the beginning of the summer. I've had to be on my feet a lot the last couple of weeks and besides being tired overall, my feet ache.

Three more weeks and life should calm down. I haven't had a chance to post WIWs either. DH bought and installed a new doorbell with a camera--takes fish eye video. So once a day I go out front to check on my plants (dying in the heat and drought) and there I am. I've become well aware that I often sink into an overly relaxed posture, so I am working on that every day. When I hold myself upright in the proper way not only do I look better, but my back doesn't ache so much. (I spend too much time sitting in front of a computer.) Undoubtedly the fish eye distorts a bit, but I don't think this is what brings to mind a Little Old Lady when I look at the video, which I immediately delete.

The weather is supposed to cool off this weekend, which will get me out-of-doors and moving around again. I want to post at least 2 WIW a week beginning October--this will inspired me to keep working on core exercises and pay more attention to posture.

I believe that when it comes to diet, everyone is different, particularly with carbs. With the full support of my DH, my youngest DD and I are eating vegan now. Surprisingly, my DH doesn't seem to mind eating what we eat. He just adds ham on the side (not healthy! but at least I don't have to eat it). We need a lot of fiber, so I make sure we get it. My DD and I are finding that our digestive issues are resolved with a vegan diet, so I imagine we'll keep eating this way.

Like Style Fan, I do need carbs to feel full, but have no problem eating whole grains (have been doing that for years anyway). One of my older DDs has to eat GF, but she no longer lives at home.

Anne: There are differing opinions on the size of a serving, but I generally use between 1 tsp-1Tbsp of coconut or olive oil or nut butter, 1 oz nuts (or http://www.eatright.org/resour.....a-nutshell), 1/3-1/2 avacado, 1 oz cheese, 1 cup yogurt. Or if the night's meat is a fattier cut I might not add any extra. You will want to adjust based on your needs.

Meredith, Thanks - how do you measure a serving size of fat?

We are having a particularly cold spring so far. Maybe my weight will go down again when it warms up, as per my usual yearly fluctuation.

Anne: Fat at dinner? A serving size of avocado, nuts/seeds, full fat dairy, coconut or olive oil, etc. on top of whatever fat is in the night's protein. It's not "filling" so much as satisfying. Fat for the day overall is still fairly low. I prioritize in this order: non-starchy veggies, protein, fat, everything else. In the past I mistakenly thought of a "low-fat" diet as a "no-fat" diet and I've realized I need to be intentional about the good stuff and not just getting my fat through chocolate or other desserts

I will add to the carbs discussion by saying that I need carbs to feel full. DH and I like to eat at a deli that is vegetarian and it often serves gluten free foods. I find GF don't fill me up. I am fine with gluten so bring it on. DH feels the same.
I always have some type of carb with our meals. Gluten or not.
Okay next. I have been doing Yoga about 4 or 5 times a week. I decided to add another element to my routine. Last night DH and I went to a fitness class. It was lots of fun. We did light weights on a Bosu Ball. The teacher was very good. I am going to try to do a fitness class 2 or 3 times a week.

Sally, I'm intrigued as to how you get enough sleep! Sleep is something I've been trying to focus on as I often don't get enough of and find myself falling asleep in the day. But with older children not going to bed early any more, and guests over our house til late often (though sometimes I go to bed before they leave) it is pretty hard and I've been focusing on not needing to get up before 6:30/6:45. I have a good gym routine in my lunchbreak so it works out ok.

Meredith, thanks! How much "healthy fat" do you eat? I've got a lot more realized about fat the last few years, but with the blood pressure thing I'm trying to cut down again, though not to the L'Abeille level!

Sally and Maneera (good to see you back, BTW) maybe we are similar in needing carbs! Sally I have porridge a few times a week. It is a grey area of for coeliacs, but I use wheat free oats and have had my blood levels tested and don't react to them. Other days I usually have cottage cheese and berries for breakfast.

I've kind of been missing on YLF, but I'm definitely doing better in this department!

A couple weeks back I joined a Zumba class thrice a week. It's fabulous!!! While my thighs and quads were achy & sore the first few days, I still love the high-energy workout. I can't lift weights at all (thanks to a pinched nerve in my left elbow) so a workout like Zumba, followed by stretching and body weight toning exercises is perfect for me.

I also brisk walk for 1.5hours every evening - 30 mins walking my dogs & then an hour for myself. The weather has improved so it's easier to spend evenings outdoors.

@Anne - I strongly believe that when it comes to carbs, everyone is different. I think it may have something to do with how our body metabolizes sugars. I NEED carbs in all meals, or else, I dont feel full and I also feel weak. Low carb diets simply do not work for me. But....I have noticed that if I eat a big portion of meat (usually chicken), I can do without carbs. So I can eat 4-5 pieces of roast chicken with a small salad and be ok. Otherwise, just a salad is NOT enough for me at dinner time. I can eat a salad for lunch but not dinner. I need a more filling dinner too. And if you are working out regularly, I don't see a problem in eating those carbs...especially if you're eating way before bed time.

Excercise breakthrough for me this week. Finally adding some longer runs back into my routine!

Anne: I eat very few carbs so I might not be the best person to weigh in. But what works for me is to make sure to have at least two veggies to help fill me up (usually two cups of green plus something seasonal). Add to that wild rice or sweet potato maybe two times a week. I try to make sure to get some quality fats in at dinner and that's what really sustains me.

Sally: Nothing to do with health but I wanted to let you know we were finally able to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople. We loved it!

Anne, we must have cross posted!! I go to the gym at 6am and am very regular about it unless I am sick. So I missed yesterday but will head back again tomorrow.

In terms of carbs, I too need a certain number. I like carbs at breakfast and lunch, but I am not so worried at dinner. Breakfast carbs are mostly oats for me (bircher muesli or porridge - not sure if you eat oats or not, it seems to be a grey area). Lunch carbs are either wraps or bread, or occasionally potato or sweet potato in a frittata or soup. Dinner is a mixture - my sons and Jon love pasta, rice, potatoes, garlic bread etc.. I partake about half the time, but try to cook meals where I can have less carbs but still some.

Sally sorry to hear about your bad week, and being run down and then ill. I'm impressed that you managed the exercise you did with all that going on!

Abeille, how are you feeling now as you recover? And are you used to the diet? I would find that change so hard. Are you cutting down on salt too?

Something that has been bothering me recently is some higher blood pressure readings. My blood pressure has always been normal, but recently I had top numbers of 151 and then 139. I'll get my doctor to check it out next time I go (these readings were from the personal trainer at the gym) but in the meantime I've been trying to cut down on salt, get myself back into lower fat dairy (like many people, I'd gone back to full fat the last few years) and have started taking magnesium.

In other news food has basically been an absolute bust, with a collapsed ceiling having me break out the comfort food (dark chocolate, cinnamon toast and even some icing mixture!) So of course my weight is up.

Here's a food related question. For those trying to reduce grain intake, how do you fill yourselves up? I have fewish carbs for breakfast some mornings, and not that much for lunch, but feel not at all full if I don't have a reasonable portion (at least a cup) for my evening meal. I try not to eat after 8pm, but I need to feel full before that.

I don't know how otherwise to fill my kids up either. Last night I made quinoa tabbouuli (not much quinoa in it) and Lamb koftas. I had wraps which DD8 could eat, but couldn't find any gluten free ones. My 2 coeliac daughters were making bowls of porridge to fill themselves up soon after, in addition to the PB on toast that DD13 (ie having a growth spurt) eats every night.

Exercisewise I managed 3 trips to the gym, 2 to go through a new programme, rode for an hour on Thursday and did a 5km parkrun on Sat. Mon was a public holiday, and I went for another hour bike ride with DD13 and an hour jog/walk with DD10. I've been working on keeping my daily steps up too, encouraged by the Stepathalon program we are doing at work.

At last I have time to contribute to this thread, because last week I graduated from cardiac rehab. Till now that meant 2 mornings a week driving to the hospital in a nearby town to spend a supervised hour in the gym, plus some classes. On other days I walk on the beach at home or on the boardwalk of the waterfowl park in the town where I work. The biggest benefit to me has been the forging of a new habit, of regular exercise, as being just as important and worthy of scheduling as my hours at work.

As the weather gets unfriendly I will use my recumbent bike at home (with Netflix-I'm in the market for a new series) and the gym at the hospital where I work, which I've discovered still has a TV with VCR, so maybe I can catch up on the movies I've hoarded...

For 3 months after my heart attack I was super strict with diet (no saturated fats, no sugar, no red meat) and tracked all my intake for 4-6 weeks. Now my eyes and appetite have adjusted to appropriate servings without measuring.

I am now down 14 lb (6 more to reach my goal). Sadly it never comes off quite where we wish: now my watch is loose and I am stepping out of my shoes, but my waist is only 1/2" smaller...

I forgot last week to start this thread- Sorry.

Well actually I was having a bad week. A hectic week two weeks ago left me very drained last week and while I was good about coffee and wine, I was shocking with sugar. I also had three insomniac nights. As a result of being run down I have just spent two days in bed with a virus. Up today and it was an enforced rest (and started binge watching Outlander).

Last week I missed one gym session, and went to two. I went for one gentle walk and one sad run. I think I will right the week off.

Tangelo's are spectacularly delicious right now and this week I will eat my first asparagus of the season. I have been playing around with soba noodles and had a couple of lovely salads with an orange and miso dressing - happy to share the recipes if anyone is interested.

How is your week going?
