Thank you Donna, Anne and GF for your encouraging words!
I am already feeling the benefits of regular exercise again. It has been really hard for me to get back into the habit. This OT thread and all you lovely Fabbers have been such a help!

I started taking magnesium myself after the recent discussion about it. Orally at night, and only one third of the recommended amount so far - I find that with most supplements I'm best off if I start slowly, one dose every few days, and then work myself up to the recommended amount over a few weeks.

Has anyone had success with a joint support supplement or anything in the glucosamine/chondrotin line? I used to take one and didn't notice much improvement, but I am several years older now and am definitely starting to feel the creaking joints a bit.

Helen11, run/walks are the way to go! Even walking a minute every mile significantly reduces the likelihood of injury. At some marathons--maybe half-marathons, too--there are run/walk pace-setters who do a 4/1 split.

That's the way to do it Helen! Increasing slowly and consistently. I'm so excited for you! Funny of your brother! You're not too far away from your 5k goal. Last time I did a race was April, a 10K+ (about 6.7 miles). I hope to work up to that again in time.

It's encouraging to read how the week is going for you all.
Donna, I'm just starting to jog, from alternating 3minutes walking/ jogging a couple of weeks ago, and managed 12 mins straight today. Though my brother happened to drive past and pretended to offer me a lift!
I would like to get to 5km , like Anne can : )

Had a treadmill run test with heart rate monitor on, to get some numbers. I have another, different one, in 2 weeks. Trainer-coach will crunch the numbers and then explain to me what I need to do to hit some goal run times this summer. Had my first 'brick' workout - going from bike-to-run. Tough on the legs, but necessary to acclimatize to the transition for triathlon!

I've been having a good go of sleeping better at night, and not raiding the fridge when I do get up. A big thanks to Carter and others who mentioned magnesium. I've been doing Epsom salt soaks 2-3 times a week, and it seems to be conducive to a good night's sleep.

MsMaven, I so hear you about the gardening. I just don't have the stamina that I used to have for the all day gardening marathons, and I often enlist my sons to do the heavy lifting of garden pots and bags of soil. Doing a lot of perennial drifts and thick mulching so the big gardens are more low maintenance.

Shedev- stretching is great! Highly underrated IMHO!
I've had quite a few hurdles in the past six months between injuries, sicknesses and allergic reactions. I finally jogged 1.5 miles on Sunday and stretched on Monday and did a quick 15 minute spin yesterday. Today I ran 2 miles and although it seems so little it is my "re" starting point and I hope only good from here. It's funny, I've always read your posts here but haven't felt good enough to post my own progress. So there it is.

I started taking extra B12 and D3 last spring after I read that these vitamins are harder to absorb as you get older. I believe they made a difference because I did feel better after a few weeks. I wasn't tested for deficiency on either one, but I'm not taking high enough doses to cause a problem.

I think I have finally reversed the recent weight-gaining tendencies. No chocolate for Valentine'! I tried on my white jeans and summer pants today--I can wear them--but they are too tight in the waist and tummy--so I'm motivated.

The weather has been warm and springlike, so in the past couple of weeks I've been outdoors and moving around a lot more, pruning and cleaning up. The iceberg roses were still blooming at the end of January and I hated to cut them back. Anyway, I realized once again how stiff I've become, and how much stamina I've lost. I used to be able to garden all day and feel fine. Part of it is arthritis and aging, but a lot of it is sitting too much.

No big events or holidays in the next couple of weeks, so I expect to be able to stay on track and not be tempted by goodies.

GF - I like how you are thinking. And you always look very trim and in shape in your photos.

Laura - you reminded me that I'm supposed to be taking Vit D too - I have been forgetting (Though maybe I'm getting enough in the hot summer - it is certainly sunny on my walk to the bus morning and night)!

I think the iron tablet problems are exacerbated by pregnancy. Last time I felt things settled down after the first week, and when I got into a routine. What worked for my was to have the tablet last thing at night and then have some psyllium in the morning

Xtabay - well done, I wish I could commit to not eating after 8 too (it has worked in the past) I need to work on my evening eating - am often pretty self controlled all day but then over eat at night.

My energy seems to be at an all-time low, so I'd better check out the B-12 thing. Otherwise, everything is going well. Lost another pound. It's coming off slowly, but that's okay. I've been religious about not eating after 8pm, which seems to be great for my metabolism and getting the scale numbers down. I've been making pots of the Weight Watchers zero-point soup to quell hunger pangs between meals. It's very filling and satisfies the veggie need. Onward and downward!

B12 deficiency is common, Shedev. I hope it gets sorted out soon and that your energy levels return to normal.

Weight isn't budging, but after doing some research, I've slowly come to terms with it. What bothers me most are aesthetics and not fitting into pencil skirts, but frankly, I'm at the ideal weight for my frame in terms of minimizing mortality risk. Since I've been getting stronger, and therefore slowly increasing my lean mass, I shouldn't complain. At least, that's what my positive frame of mind is telling me today.

I finally went out for a hilly run on Friday. My calves paid the price for days, but the cold temperature and fresh air were refreshing. I've put in two workouts at the gym this week, and have two to go. Ten more dead-hang pull-ups to meet this week's quota.

I didn't lose any weight this week but it's TOM so no big shock. I'm eating reasonably well but the big improvement is with exercise. The Whole Life Challenge is been really helpful for reminding me to keep moving and try different things. I've ratcheted up my walking, tried a few exercise apps, and pulled out the yoga DVDs yesterday.

B vitamins are great for energy. They actually make me a bit hyper when I take too much. I finally got my vitamin D levels to (the low end of) normal after 6+ months of prescription supplementation, and I feel so much better it's ridiculous. Of course it's spring here too, so that helps. Still working on some other nagging health things, but at least things are looking up.

Sally, have you walked a half marathon before? I'm thinking of joining a group that trains for a half or marathon starting in April. I'd definitely be mostly walking, not running.

Anne, I hope your knee continues to improve. I remember my SIL complaining about iron supplements during her pregnancies and how they upset her stomach. I think she found some kind of vitamin-enhanced juice that settled better than pills?

Shedev, I've heard of B12 deficiency before - I think the friend who had it really benefited from the supplementation.

I've started taking iron tablets again after 6 weeks or so off them, and I can already feel an improvement, though I'm still having some, shall we say, abdominal adjustment!

Sally - sorry to hear that life is a bit gloomy and stresfull. I'm always impressed by your exercise efforts. Doing well except at parties isn't a bad balancing result!

I've been pretty gentle on the exercise except for stretches for my knee from the physio. Tried a very gentle walk/run on the treadmill today. I think it is getting better.

i wrote about one of my food temptations in another thread. Next step is to cut down on rice. White rice is a big temptation of mine, and DH has tended to overcater. He has agreed to just cook enough for one meal and serve me out one cup (the amount the dietician said was ok)

At least B vitamins are relatively easy to absorb - at least I think they are.

My week has been steady. Eating mostly good but had two parties to go to and drank wine and ate cake:)
