I began following Weight Watcher's Simply Filling Method, eating foods on the list and lost 5lbs last week. I gained even more weight than the menopausal gain that hit me as this mourning the unexpected and sudden unexplained passing of my sister has been sinking in...

I am sick with cough and congestion but am still managing to do short burst of 10 minutes of my Simply Fit board-twisting followed by planking, mountain climbers, push-ups, triceps dips , and squats. Coughing usually occurs after that and I do it twice a day... Determined to move despite this virus without over doing it.

Joy, definitely cat-cow and forward fold (use a stack of pillows for your head if you can't get your head to the floor).

Also, a heating pad helps a lot before you do these poses.

I took a tumble on black ice a couple of weeks ago and have been very sore. I am starting to get back to walking a couple of miles a day on the tread mill with the help of Advil. Anyone know any gentle exercise to do to loosen up my back?

Also not really getting anywhere with holiday weight gain, but hard to worry too much about it. did 2 gym workouts, 2 runs (skipped one due to rain) and one yoga. I think I'll stop the yoga though as it hurt my wrists (a sore wrist was why I stopped a year ago) and it makes me tired to get up early for that class. Also my physio and the PT at the gym have both recommended pilates and I am going to to a session specifically for pilates for runners. An individual assessment to begin with.

Food hasn't been too bad except the evening I baked brownies! Or the day I baked gingerbread.

I feel like I'm tireder than I'd like to be, and it may be diet, or the current humidity (we are not typically humid where I am, but have dry heat , so I'm not used to it), or it may be the effects of being off iron tablets for a while now. My iron levels had finally got normal and my doctor wanted me to go off them for 3 months from the end of last year to see what happened. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are down again.

Feel like I'm treading water as far as losing holiday present around my waistline.

A few sunny days with no rain. I'm moving around more than I have for weeks: pruning roses and the wisteria, cleaning up leaves and snails, fertilizing and walking back and forth a lot. It's been great having a break from the rain. I've neglected regular exercise, but I am burning calories.

I'm ready for the next round of rain beginning tomorrow. Tomorrow is a good day to get back on track, right?

Missed 3 days of gym time due to staying overnight in the Big City (DH had a conference, so I stayed with him). Walked miles shopping in the pm's though! Also, got extra sleep since I didn't have to manage the commute. It is amazing what a couple of extra hours of sleep can do!

Did a 1000m swim for time (just over 24 min.) and though I'm not doing any running for cardio, I'm running 1 mile as warm-up before weights without any worsening of the PF. Got my cycling in as well.

As usual my exercise has been pretty good..

I walked three times, ran twice, and did two hard gym workouts. I did skip one walk that I should have done but I have been tired.

Food has been acceptable and I have eaten a lot of vege (a goal to add in more healthy things rather than focus on taking things out).

I should probably have my bloods taken to see where my cholestrol is at.

There is so much conflicting advice regarding grains/meat/fats at the moment and it is hard to keep on top of it (and for the medical profession to do so too). Anecdotally I know people who seem to do very well on a vegan diet and others that do very well on a paleo diet....

GF and Sterling sound like busy hard weeks, and Lisa I always think getting outside helps!!

Sterling - I don't presume to be an expert on cholesterol issues, and in fact, I'm in the steep part of the learning curve. The relationship between grains and cholesterol levels was told to me by someone whose opinion I am interested in, so I'm going to do some reading on it. And thanks , gf, for the book reference. I'll check it out asap. I understand that cholesterol issues are complex, and that not all doctors are up to speed on the current research. My doctor is a bit regimented and not always current on nutrition (eat a bran muffin , Lisa) so this appointment tomorrow will be interesting .

Sterling, check out Gary Taubes, Good Calories, Bad Calories, where he discusses the science about cholesterol. The TL;DR version is unless you have genetically high cholesterol (or for some rare cases otherwise), you're better off cutting out grains and carbs to lower your cholesterol levels. There is no link otherwise between consuming high cholesterol foods and cholesterol levels. This book is the best evidenced-based book that I've read pertaining to carbs/cholesterol and I've read many.

I would like to join you, Gradfashionista. I accomplished a tremendous amount of stuff at work. Each day (except Friday) necessitated a site visit to some part of the State. Ten to eleven hour days. Lots of driving. Lots of fast food restaurants. Gallons and gallons of coffee. I could have worked out, but each evening I came home to prepare for the next day's site visit. Not a good week for working out, but that will change this coming Monday (2/13).

LisaP -- I admit to eating meat (chicken and salmon). I greatly admire people that give up meat all together and I will support you fully if you decide to go that route. I understand how limiting meat can help with lowering cholesterol; I don't see the connection with grains though. Could you take a minute to explain?

Better than recent average. I'm adding in an outdoor walk on the weekend, and am enjoying that despite it being mid-winter here and still very cold. Still hitting the gym for at least 2 high-intensity workouts each week- and one or two spin classes. My latest blood work is still indicating high cholesterol which I haven't been able to manipulate through diet, so tomorrow I expect to be given a prescrip for a statin , which doesn't thrill me. I would like to move toward a meat-free diet full-time, and it looks like removing all grains is another goal towards improving my cholesterol #'s. As is losing some weight.

This felt like a full week of almost not working out. Many evenings, I almost didn't go to the gym, which meant leaving home too late to allow for a full workout. Winter/fatigue/lack of energy. I ended up squeezing in a bare bones workout everyday, working up to a single squat and bench single, and then adding in a doubles/triples at lower weights.

This week's highlights:
Squatting 205lb (PR), and then doing a 185lb triple (PR) afterward;
Benching 145lb, and then doing a 125lb triple, and a 130lb triple afterward.

How was your week?
