GF coconut ice is made of icing sugar and coconut, mixed with milk and set in a tray, then cut into squares. I'm actually quite fussy about sweets and lollies and don't like many of them ( or can't eat them if they aren't Gluten free) but then go mad when there is some I can eat. Plus these are sweet rather than very fatty. I got given some homemade chocolate caramel nut things and I could only eat them one at a time because they were much richer.

With an unseasonal amount of sunshine (clear sunny days, walks clear of snow and limited amount of ice, temperatures around -10C), I have resumed walking outside in the daytime where possible. Since it's dark by the time I leave work, this means doing the Waterfowl Park on the way to the office in the morning. I encounter any combination of slush, snow, ice, frozen gravel, and slippery boardwalk, so I have to make footwear and outfit decisions to match.

I've also started walking to and from the hospital at noon to make rounds (about 1/2 mile each way). I think the fitness is improving, because there's a small hill midway where I've always had to shorten my stride in order to maintain the pace, and this is no longer happening.

This past week, I've started to pump my arms when I walk. I was surprised to discover that my stride is longer, thus a quicker speed for the same pace, when I do so. And then last night, that my upper body is aching as a result. The down side, this has kept me from picking up the hand weights again.

Despite getting back into the daily exercise routine, I have failed to shake off the 5 lb. I regained over the holidays, and I know it can't ALL be increased muscle mass. Which means I have to start paying more attention to what I eat as well. So this is the week I was going to start tracking my intake (the first step). So far I was only successful on Monday. Harder than usual this week, with 2 ER shifts. Still. I resist doing it, because it takes time. Time that when it's limited, I'd rather spend on exercise (which I know is less of a contributor to weight loss, but more important to my overall health).

I'm thinking the next step may be to give up following certain social media accounts that are not only sucking up time but bathing me in negativity...

Anne, coconut ice sounds intriguing--what is it? To answer your question, when I started lifting, I started with an empty bar for all of my lifts, except for deadlifts, which were my strongest lift. I do remember really struggling with squats, because of forward lean, knee caving, etc. Those are still issues today, but I have a better understanding of why they happen, and how they can be mitigated. I also distinctly failing on an 85lb bench, and thinking that I would never reach 100lb. :)

JAileen, ugh, yes! At least it's over with.

Kiwigal, you sound very positive and focussed here.

Helen11, congrats on the parkrun!

MsMaven, I agree, long talks with close ones are so important.

What a month. January is my least-favorite time of year and this year it was worse. Still haven't lost holiday weight--up and down--but I have said farewell to the bursitis that was coming on a few weeks ago.

Right now I feel it is important to take care of my mental health. Long telephone conversations with my sisters helps a lot. We mostly email and it is good to talk with a real friend.

I had good intentions, but life and temptation got in the way. Well, erase all the bad stuff and we'll just start over and do better this time.

Great work ladies!
I achieved a personal goal last week - completed my first parkrun.
I ran with my DS 11 , we walked a couple of bits but finished well and can push harder next time.
Being sent an email with my time is very motivating!

Gosh, don't ask me to give up my caffeine! Worked out 6 out of 7 days. Though not up to 'two a days', I'm happy with what I accomplished. Weight work outs translating into strength in swims and cycle. No runs due to plantar fasciitis' but that is resolving! Managed to squeeze in yoga, and I think the 'aggressive' stretching of the Achilles (downward dog, etc.) is releaving the PF.

Well done all. GF I love your attitude. Jane -I suspect it is also caffeine withdrawal, I know I would getting those headaches too. Jaileen - well done. If you find the right gym it can be such a positive, convenient way to exercise.

Anne - I work from home so do have that tempation. I find setting a firm lunch time important- and not undereating at lunch or breakfast - otherwise I make up for it later.

I had a good week last week, two gym workouts, two runs, and lots of incidental exercise at the beach. Eating has been okay. Being away and on holiday mode does mean more glasses of wine and more crisps and cheese, but I think no damage was done. I am not making too many promises about abstaining from certain foods right now - I'm focussing on getting in the exercise, eating lots of healthy foods, and removing a couple of my negative attitudes which lead to poor food choices. I hope by being more positive in these aspects it will lead to a reduction of some poor food habits (eating when bored in work for example).

I have cut out alcohol, sugar, white flour, and potatoes as much as possible. I also had a colonoscopy this past week. Not the most fun thing, but it sure beats cancer!

My exercise mostly involves walking the dogs. My husband visited a potential gym a week or two ago, and I need to visit it, too. He'd like to join it.

GF - how much were you lifting when you first began? As you know, I'm continually impressed by your results!

Jane - I think your food resolutions are great and similar to mine (not the caffeine thing though - I reckon you are may be getting headaches from caffeine withdrawal)

I haven't commented this year, so I'll summarize a little.

I have nearly 3 weeks off work and 10 days of that away from home and had a wonderful, relaxing holiday. I really needed to unwind and that happened.

Exercise wise I was fairly slack - a few runs and some bushwalking.

I ate too much over Christmas and while away, and lost the groove of the healthier eating habits I had been keeping since November. I have identified now that cornflakes, raw sugar and coconut ice (which my MIL made trays of) are foods around which I have no self control! And they are my gateway to further overeating. It has been a struggle to get back to healthy eating, not helped by the fact that I had some family birthdays. I have some weight to lose now too, not surprisingly, though I am down a bit. Around 2 kgs to go.

I have dropped one day a week at work (my choice) which is great in terms of work/family/church (my DH is pastor and lots happens at our house) balance. Not so great for eating though, as I tend to overeat on the days I am home all day. Need to work on strategies for that and suggestions are welcome!

Exercise has been better since I got back to work. Have cycled in a couple of days a week (weather permitting) and back to 3 runs a week, and had a refresh of my gym programme that I am still aching from!

I too feel strong and enthusiastic! Well done with your PRs.

I had a reasonable week. I did two yoga classes, including accidentally attending an advanced class yesterday. I have so enjoyed them and I am thinking of taking an annual membership.

I have also cut out tea and coffee, and avoided bread, cakes and pasta. I had a massive headache this afternoon, but feel lighter for having cut out some foods. If I could do this for a month, I would be pleased.

I would really like to think I can keep up a slightly more fruit / veg orientated diet. I eat well enough but there is always room for improvement - which for me would be more mindful choice of food at weaker moments.

January's almost over. For those of you who made fitness or health resolutions, how have they been going?

I had a great week in terms of workouts, making it in everyday to do my daily squat and bench, even when I didn't feel well.

I hit two PRs, squatting 200lbs and benching 145lbs (approximate bodyweight). Both have been very long term goals of mine, so it was exciting to reach them in the same week.

Yesterday, I also deadlifted two singles at 275lbs, after not training the lift for 1.5 months. Feeling strong and enthusiastic.

How was your week?
