My trainer and I zeroed in on my lower back problem - a tight QL. Used a lacrosse ball to "mash it" and then did a lot of stretching on that affected left side. He said he noticed that my one hip was higher than the other and by the end of stretching it looked a great deal better. Woke up this morning with absolutely no lower back stiffness!

Now heading out for a massage and my trainer has given instructions to my massage therapist as to what she has to work on. I am lucky that my massage therapist and personal trainer work together - I get great results.

I am still plagued by morning lower back stiffness, but went to the gym twice last week to try to really loosen up my lower back, hip flexors, etc. Making progress, but hate waking up in the middle of the night with the pain. I am fine when walking and stiffen up with sitting or lying down for long periods.

Otherwise, walking on the treadmill at home with only 1% incline but at a fast pace.

Feeling better from cold but still don't have energy back. It's a sunshiny day after a lot of clouds and rain, so I intend to go for a walk--even a short walk outdoors will be more than I've done for weeks.

Eating better too. Pretty much off sugar and wine.

Looking forward to spring for sure.

Glad you are well again GF and Angie, and sorry to hear about your dad Mary.
I have decided to do the whole30 (like you Mary?) which is a concept that has attracted/ repelled me for years and have completed 5 days with not much of a problem, despite starting on the last week of my cycle. They encourage you to eat a LOT of food, so hopefully I won't gain weight on it.

Exercise-wise I've done two swims in the last week, (2km/2.4 km) cycled to and from work twice, 2 gym weight sessions and lots of recreational cycling with the family. Took a break from running after last sat's parkrun but am planning on a 10km race tomorrow.

The gym has been cold, so I've been warming up with cardio before weight training, and skipping a separate cardio workout. So, 3 run/weights workouts, a spin class, and a restorative yoga class. This is pretty much a perfect week for what I want to do at this time of year.

I've been keeping a fitness journal (at my trainer's insistence) writing down every workout, and charting my weight and muscle/fat ratios once a week (every Sunday am). The records reveal:

-330 hours in fitness specific workout activities in 2017
-average 6.3 hrs per week
-most workouts were 1 hr - 90min.
-busiest months were July, August, and November (40-50 hrs)
-quietest months were Jan, Feb, and October (20-24 hrs)
-a slow progression downwards in weight (148lbs in Jan. 2017 to 138lbs Jan. 2018)

I have different fitness goals in 2018, but will continue to keep up the journal. I found the data informative, and it was encouraging to see some of the progressions.

Glad you are feeling better Angie and GF. Yoga is a great way to exercise. It is sometimes hard to find the right class. Some classes are not as challenging as others. Sorry to hear about your dad Mary.
We are on the road and that always makes it hard to do exercise. I have gone to the fitness room at the hotel in the evening when possible. After driving all day that is the last thing I feel like doing but I am so glad I did afterward. On Friday we will be in one place for 2 months. Everything will be back to normal. Lots of Yoga and walking.

I'm glad you're feeling better, GF. Sounds good. FWIW, you need to find the RIGHT type of yoga and very competant yogis who lead the class - there are soooooo many types of classes and teachers. I've had my fair share of below par yoga classes too. Don't give up. It's the healthiest type of strength training there is.

Mary, you did GREAT despite the stress of Dad. Well done, and I'm thinking of Dad.

I'm back on track after gastric flu. Went to five heated Vinyasa classes last week despite my goal being four. They are challenging, and the yogis are tough. But I'm managing and enjoying. Walking Sam and shopping with clients is simply part or my active life. Food plan is always good at the Cox Castle. Lots of healthy and fun eating in ways that work for our bodies, and love for cooking and eating. Everything from scratch, very global, tasty, wholesome, veggie and fruit rich, but not carb, caffeine or gluten free. No deprivation, but lots of moderation.

Workouts have been spotty this week. My dad had a health crisis and that messed me up. All I managed was one workout with the trainer. Ugh! However the diet continues and my weight is down some so that's a good thing.

Hoping to get more exercise in this week!

A three-day hiatus from the gym, a few elliptical workouts, and a couple of quick strength workouts. I’ve scaled back my weights considerably, and am slowly switching to a higher rep (3-6), lower intensity scheme. I tried a yoga class at my gym but it wasn’t a good fit, so I may end up buying a few videos online.

How was your week?
