Thanks GF- patience is not a trendy or flashy virtue but such an important one. I agree with the importance of building habits and exercise slowly and sustainably.

This week has been very mixed for me. We had the high of a successful club relay day with lots of medals that I organised-and my sons winning some great awards at school. I ran for an hour and we had some good work news.

But one of our clients suffered a major work accident - a plane crash- with the loss of two lives. It is tragic in every way.

And yesterday my Mother in Law passed away- in her sleep. She had vascular dementia but it was a shock. So it has been a very sad strange and emotional week.

Angie, I was thinking a few days ago about stollen and the need to make a trip to TJs to buy some goodies for the family.

I'm glad yoga has had such a positive effect on both of you, Angie and Lisa. And Lisa, it's really, really, hard to fight against gain when it's an effect of medication. The body has compensatory mechanisms, even if intake and activity remain constant. Hang in there. You sound like you're doing everything right, and your thoughts about yoga are pushing me to try it. By the way, Fitbit just introduced some gorgeous colours. I'm temped to get it just for the aesthetics!

Ms. Maven, are the shoes still in good shape in the heel?

Ah, patience. A good reminder. I had a good week last week: exercised on schedule, was dropping pounds, feeling better. Then the weekend did me in. Today my weight is up, my back aches from carrying kitty litter and groceries into the house, and I'm wondering if my metabolism has slowed again. I wore some favorite 5 year-old shoes Sunday, and yesterday and today the pains from arthritis in my feel has been discouraging. No more even semi-cute shoes for me?

The only thing to do is to get back on track and know that I've done it before and I can do it again. Thanks for the post.

Your thoughts on patience and self care were well articulated. Yoga had a positive impact on my patience and calmness, and even though i don't practice right now, it has stayed with me. I am trying not to give in to my anxiety over my fitness level and my weight right now, and those "yoga moments' help. I have been fighting with the effects of some medication I took recently for a few months to help with sleep and anxiety : it caused some weight gain . Fighting with my weight has been almost a life-long (as an adult) thing, and being able to get my anxiety over it under control is half the battle. I just realized I have used the word 'anxiety' far too many times in one paragraph , lol. I am in a short period of calm in my job right now, so am taking advantage of being able to go to the gym as often as I want. Eating healthily is still pretty easy - my conscience doesn't let me eat treats or high-fat and high-sugar food , even at this time of year. Fear of gaining weight rules I hope to find a new FitBit under the tree at Christmas - i am interested in getting a handle on how much 'other' activity and movement i get in a day. Sorry for the novel, I guess I needed to vent

Although I have worked out in one form or another for 43 years, I only kept a workout journal once - while training for a marathon in my 40's.
At the beginning of 2016 I started keeping a workout journal at DS #2's insistence. It is a revelation how, even after all these years, I am still making measurable improvement in my fitness! The journal has turned out to be an important tool.

I can relate to the patience thing too. Earlier this year I hurt my knee and I've had to quite gradually work up to running again, and do lots of strength exercises, learn when to back off a bit and rest and when to push through.I can relate to both of you GF and Meredith

And I'm very happy to say that I ran my first 10km race in a year on Sunday - and I got a PB time! Wasn't expecting that. (most of my training runs have been with kids, or very slow ones)

Still in awe at what you can lift GF. I was happy to be able to increase some of my arm exercises to 10kg in each hand!

I had an an appraisal at the gym yesterday and all my measurements are down (except the calf, which is fine, because it has put on muscle)

Fitness is improving, though still fair, not yet average (whatever that means - I'm sure I'm fitter than my agegroup on average!)

My weight is now almost at the bottom of what I consider my "range", which also happens to be considered a good weight for running if I count myself to have an average frame. So probably that helped with the race on Sunday. How I will keep it down over Christmas and being on holiday is another question taxing me!

Not all that up with low carb baking GF, but those cupcakes sure sound delicious. I did order some "smart sugar" this week to try out in Christmas baking.

Sally, this was a therapeutic read. YOU ROCK. And good job on your lifts. I'm proud of your very healthy attitude, and love that you're sharing and spreading its positive effects.

I've realized that patience is one of the most important traits to nurture and develop. It not only helps you, but it helps others even more. Yoga has taught we to became more patient. And I just came back from an excellent hip opening class. I'm striving to be more patient each day.

As for the healthy habits - we have a snack cupboard full of stollen, delectable chocolate, the best biscuits, nougat, malt balls, mince pies, chewy sour sweets and liquorice. I'm afraid our healthy ship has sailed into the New Year.

I love what you wrote about patience. Last January was the first time in several years I've been able to work out consistently and at a more intense level. I made the decision up-front that I needed to swallow my pride about pace and focus on building fitness steadily, do the little things to prevent injury, and focus on progress and not perfection. It's a challenge to maintain this mindset, but I think it's really critical to my wellbeing.

Coming back from several weeks off due to fitness I scaled back my intensity last week, but managed to fit in 4 workouts. Feels good to get back into the swing of things.

Warm greetings to everyone.

Despite sleeping through today's workout, I managed to work out three times this week. My legs have put on a bit of mass, and consequently, I no longer fit in the one old work dress I have with me at the moment (it's gone from slightly small to too small). While I'm upset about the dress not fitting, I've accepted the change because of how great I feel with my lifts at the moment.

Earlier this week, Angie praised the virtue of patience in somebody's thread with regard to waiting for the right item. At the time, I recall thinking that while patience might pay off for shopping, there is always the chance that your exact HEWI might never appear. Accordingly, you might decide to compromise because you're tired of waiting and because you have a wardrobe hole that needs to be filled in the interim. There aren't any guarantees of finding your HEWI, only calculated risks and probabilities of compromising today or waiting for a potential future reward tomorrow.

For some reason, Angie's comment made me think about the role of patience in fitness and rehab, and the ways in which patience and impatience shape health outcomes. Whereas patience doesn't guarantee finding a HEWI, it does guarantee optimal recovery and growth. If you're impatient with your progress and respond accordingly by adding extra minutes, miles, or pounds when you shouldn't, you are likely jeopardizing the health of your future self, and risking a further setback. The impatience of the present comes with an immediate cost. So, as we craft our New Year's resolutions, however ambitious, let's honour our bodies by implementing a slow-and-steady approach, and being patient with ourselves and with others.

Leaving the platitudes behind us, my fitness highlights of the week include benching 8 sets of 4 reps @ 110lbs in under 30 minutes (a personal record, in terms of volume at that weight) and doing five deadlift triples @ 240lb without a belt or chalk.

I tried tracking/weighing food using MFP this week and it lasted about 1.5 days. Everything has been relatively low carb, including the chocolate cupcakes with bourbon salted caramel frosting.

How was your week?
