Runcarla, There are all sorts of rolling methods. I also regularly roll, using the Melt Method.

This week I managed to sneak in two 30 minute treadmill runs and two 60 minute treadmill walks, in addition to 4 50 minute Pilates workouts. I’m getting tired of my treadmill, but I pick a series to watch while I use it, and it typically keeps me motivated.

My goal of getting enough sleep is a tough one. I managed 3 nights where I hit my target, the rest of the week I slept around 6-6.5 hours.

I’m giving up chocolate again. The best way to do it is cold turkey. I am convinced I have more headaches when I eat it than when I refrain..

Late to join this thread, but, I wondered whether anyone here does the annual 30 day yoga programs, offered free on YouTube, on the Yoga with Adriene channel? (Not shilling for anything, I'm simply a big fan)?

I've been sticking with it now for the whole few weeks. I had to double up a few days, to make sure to keep up, but I'm enjoying some different stretches than I usually do in a Yoga session, this year. I really like that Adriene M, who does these sessions, is a very kind, gentle soul, and her practices push me but don't make me feel all awkward or rigid.

DH and I finally ventured out for a short walk, just the other day - it has been punishingly cold, and I have a tough time luring him out for "exercise" at all. Walking is the one thing I can usually get him to join me for, outside.

I'm trying to err on the side of lower carbohydrate meals, and I feel best when I get lots of vegetables and less fruits, with adequate helpings of meat. I think this is the year I'm going to get a glucose meter, and start tracking my blood sugars.

This week has been pretty good

Three gym workouts (weights and high intensity)
One walk with a friend
Healthy choices for meals and less snacking

I am still half in holiday mode and drinking more wine and beer than usual.

I agree with the mental health part as well Janet
- I am trying to keep a gratitude journal - I find this helps
- I am doing weekly planning which helps me a lot
- I do need to do an annual plan as well
- I commit to a 4-6 weekly massage

I went for a 5km run last weekend and was hoping to do one during the week but it will be tomorrow (one week later). How to increase this when I get fatigued from my gym workouts is the challenge - especially when putting off running is easy for me to do!!

Sounds like lots of great habits here - Angie/Lisa/GF/Janet/Mary/Smittie/Danusia/CitygirlDC

More or less over my cold, but still lacking in energy. Did start back on some of my exercise routine this week. Enforced resting has helped some of my aches and pains, and even my feet feel better! I want to start walking again, but I look out and the weather is so dreary--although it is warm. Shouldn't complain--it's been unusually warm here this winter. I do have less energy in winter, but it's not a full-blown case of SAD.

Diet not going well--both DH and I are trying to get off sugar and alcohol, but people are still sending holiday stuff with homemade goodies. We gave away a lot, but can't bear to give away the best part.

As the days get a little longer I expect to get moving more. After having flu-like bug, going through DH's pneumonia, and colds, I am terrified of getting the flu. I want to get back to feeling strong and healthy again!

Lisa P, I had trigger point massage therapy for my TMJ which was a result of tight SCM, traps, etc - neck and shoulder area as well as my jaw and TM joint. I highly recommend you do massage therapy before you progress to doing myofascial release using foam roller and/or tennis or lacrosse balls. Rolling is painful but effective if done correctly, but the shoulders are tough to roll out on your own.

I did... what? Two sessions with the trainer and I guess two Orange Theory classes last week so I guess that was good. Food is good and the scale is down some. This week is a little more challenging because my dad has been sick so I am trying to stick to the diet at least even though I have missed a couple of workouts.

LisaP, it isn't comfortable, and I would suggest starting with a massage therapist if it is myofascial release for upper body (neck, traps, and upper back.) Check in with the athletes in your community and find out who does their body work. (My body work people treat Canada's national sprint team, wrestlers, weight lifters, and swimmers, as well as a local population of retirees!)

Danusia, Thera band stretches and standing pelvic tilt are good (20 reps.) I use them to warm-up then progress to yoga hip openers like Happy Baby, Cow Face, and a deep squat that is the precursor to Crow. I also do The Spinal Twist and Rag Doll. I sometimes do Pigeon, but it isn't as effective for me as something like Cow Face.

I have progressed from a foam roller to a rubber one with a hard plastic core and really work glutes, hams, quads and finish off with illio tibial band (tough). I use a squash ball to roll my glutes and work on a chronic periformis issue And the roller or ball on my upper back/delts which get tight from swimming. You have to be careful around the spine. I do dislocators with a wooden dowel for my shoulder mobility, and use a golf ball on my feet (plantar fasciitis resolved and I want to keep it that way!)

DS#2 and I take turns rolling each other with a stick roller (like a rolling pin).

We have a 1 hour routine we do Sunday nights - listening to Maroon 5! I am addicted to this routine because it makes such a huge difference (relief from discomfort.). However, I also stretch my quads and roll my glutes and feet every night before bed-15 minutes. Happy Baby and Cow Face are easy to do lying on a bed if time is short and you are having trouble sleeping due to discomfort.

Sorry to be so long, but I can get very exited about the subject of rehab and preventative maintanance!

Glad to hear you’re over your cold, GF.
Angie. Stomach flu is the worst. Glad you’re feeling better.
Lisap: good idea to just measure vs. Weigh.
CitygirlDC: good luck!

I managed to get into the gym 2 times this week and the great thing is that I’m now fit enough that my heart rate goes down enough in between “pushes” to actually allow some recovery time, so I can do better pushes.

SO says that it is how quick you recover (how quickly your heart rate goes down) that tells you how fit you are, so I’m happy.

So I’ve gone from power walking to jogging over the past three months. Again, it’s a real sign of better cardiovascular fitness.

My leg muscles were feeling weak while going down stairs and that is no longer the case.

I’m trying to look for visual signs of fitness in my body, but nothing seems any tighter. I am not on any diet though, except to eat less popcorn.

Update: DH and DS#1 and #2 had committed to participating in a race in a nearby town that has a record for the best attended kilt run. Originally they thought it was a 5k. DH and DS#2 are Clydesdales (6ft 3in and 200Lbs+) and non runners. DS#1 is an amazing runner. When they went to register they learned the course is 5 MILES or 8km and their courage failed. I said if they committed, I would run as well, AND volunteered to do the drive home (there is a beer tent). So now we are all in and I have a goal to aim for. The race is June 23rd.

@Runcarla - I don't know if it is the cold weather or not, but my hip flexors have been very tight. I use the foam roller and have been doing stretches after a hot shower to help stretch better. Since you are a runner, any suggestions to loosen up the hip flexors?

PS - happy to hear that your episode of shingles is gone. DH is waiting for the new shingles vaccine to be approved by insurance and I hope to get it as well even though I was vaccinated about a year and a half ago.

I have a half marathon scheduled early March and a bad cold/sinutis derailed my training efforts. The longest run I've done so far is 5 miles so I have a lot of catching up to do. This Winter has been pretty brutal because of the low temps and there nothing worse than running your long run on a tread mill. Wish me luck!

I believe the shingles episode is behind me - completely symptom free since last Thusday. I'm getting to the gym every other day, but starting with a treadmill run before weights in order to warm up because the gym is so cold. The workout is longer, but cuts out having to go another day to get the cardio.

Once a week I do a big stretch session at home. Myofascial release with bands, roller, and squash and golf balls, too.

Having trouble getting uninterrupted sleep, even with reduced caffeine.

I'm glad you're feeling better! If you managed to do a gym workout and also a 7.5 mile run/walk while recovering from that, you are a champ. :-)

I'm just back from vacation, and even though we walked lots every day, we were eating good heavy food and having drinks every night. Now that I'm back home, I haven't had any alcohol, and I'm eating much lighter again. I've just re-started tracking my eating with My Fitness Pal and am determined to stop -- and reverse -- the slow weight gain that has plagued me over the last two years.

I went for a four mile brisk walk/hike yesterday but forgot to put on my Fitbit. Oh well. That was my first day back on an exercise program. I'm going to sign up for some athletic challenge again (running or bicycling, most likely) to get myself on a training routine. I'm not great at keeping up with running or cycling unless I have an event I am training for.

And because for me, "healthy habits" also means focusing on mental health, I'll share the following: For a few hours yesterday and the day before, I sat down and worked on a plan for the year ahead that encompassed healthy habits as well as personal and professional goals. If anyone is interested, the booklet is a free download at http://yearcompass.com -- I found it enlightening to take stock of the past year and set goals for the year ahead.

The bronchitis/sinusitis is getting better, but I only managed to get in one gym workout—still too tired and headachy, and unwilling to brave the gym crowds. I did a few workouts in my kitchen, walking/jogging on the spot, doing step-ups on the stepstool, and throwing a 10lb medicine ball. The time passes more slowly than on the elliptical, but it gets my heart rate up long enough to fill my watch’s exercise ring. I also did a 7.5mile run/walk yesterday in -10C to complete the Lululemon Strava 40km challenge for the New Year.

How was your week?
