Lisa p -- I too no longer drink and I know exactly what you mean about being the first person ready to leave. It's not that I don't enjoy socializing without drinking but I can't just spend hours doing it the way I used to.

As for my own healthy habits, I am trying not to eat what I think of as obvious sugar and fat laden items. I'm not really cutting out sugar--just not eating things like cookies, candy, ice cream etc. I've been doing pretty well with this although I seem to have become addicted to Lara Bars as a somewhat "healthier" alternative. I've been a vegetarian for almost 30 years--my diet, apart from that is reasonably good.

I run almost every day but the class that I used to take that incorporated weights seems to have ceased. I have trouble motivating myself to do weights at home--need to look into finding a new class. I would love to try a Yoga class and may look into that for the new year. I have several friends who have done yoga for many years who I think could recommend a good teacher.

It's time for me to get back into accountability since Fall/Winter is usually my downfall. I ended up signing up for the Rock and Roll Half in March which gives me ample time to start my training. Although my StrongLifts training has halted due to a shoulder injury, I'm getting back into some light weight training and avoid the shoulder until healed. And finally, I'm trying out Intermittent Fasting which really helps me control my eating habits during the work week. Meanwhile, my gym has a "Maintain Not Gain" program which allows us to track our weight every week during the holidays so let see how well I do the next few weeks.

Yeah, I know it's a lot but I'm sure I can do 1 out of the 4. Wish me luck.

Ahhhhh. A dozen years ago, I had a yoga instructor who would set us up in restorative poses if we came to regular classes during our periods. So niiiiiiiiiiice.

GF, I’m impressed by the deadlifts, especially after time off.

I’ve recently decided that I should learn about bodybuilding. Strength training is important for women as we age, but I might as well look good too. I’m sick of the saggy butt, and building lats like I had in my days as a swimmer + pecs to make the most of what I have there should be a big help. I’ve only ever lifted for strength, so don’t really know where I’m going with this.
I’ve been resting on my laurels (aka butt) for nearly half a year. At first I was exercising minimally and maintaining, but then it got hot, I got lazy, and my body composition changed. So the first thing I have to do is take that inch off my waist again, and then one more to get to my goal.

I’ve been surprised that I don’t enjoy lifting as much as I did in my 20s. I hope that if I can be disciplined enough to really see improvements in body comp, strength, and build, that I’ll get hooked on it again. I lift slowly, often six counts on the extrinsic, while thinking about the muscle being torn down so it can be built. For me, it was a nearly meditative kind of thing. These days I often feel too distracted to lock into it that way, but hope I can get back to that. When I was consistent back in the day and last winter, I generally did amrap on every set, and absolutely on the last set. I usually went up every week or two.

The sleep data on my Fitbit confirmed that I have alarmingly poor sleep. I rarely use it these days—I keep my phone on me for step counting. The Fitbit I have can measure swimming—but it doesn’t realize that kicking (ie, only kicking, no arm pulls) is a thing, so it doesn’t include that in the count. :/

I drink alcohol, but never had getting drunk as a goal, or part of my usual socializing. These days I’m such a lightweight that I can get a hangover from two drinks, so I keep it to one. Opening a bottle of wine at home, where I’m the only adult, is a real commitment—I don’t like having to pour out the part that goes bad if I don’t keep up with it for five nights!

My last 2 weeks have been pretty good at exercising. I cycled to work 2 times the previous week, 3 times this last week, kept up my 3 runs a week (one "long" run (9km this week) one intervals and one 5km parkrun) and went to the gym twice for weights.

Not so good with food. I've been making more and more exceptions to my current regime, though still eating not too much, but then yesterday I went way over the top and really did overeat. Weight up today as a consequence after being in a plateau. I'm having a gym appraisal tomorrow too, so that was bad timing!

I've found the discussion above about alcohol very interesting and has given me a new insight. My feeling about it have been so much about the social side of it and a lot less about how it actually works, but it did remind me that back in my late teens I made it a rule to try alcohol only when I was already feeling comfortable in a situation.*

I'm a social introvert, or about halfway between extravert and introvert ( I like time alone, and prefer deeper conversations in smaller groups, but I can quite enjoy social things. What I don't find easy is taking the initiative socially (arranging things) or ringing people up.) I do often have a drink at a function but I don't think it affects my sociability, and in fact often makes me very sleepy. I can happily go for months without alcohol.

I do have some anxiety about pub culture and the etiquette of drinking there that I really haven't mastered. This is a big part of Australian culture and I am not confident.I was absolutely astonished to learn that Angie didn't drink, because I am pretty certain that someone like her in Australia would.

Also, not that Lisa or Shevia are talking about getting drunk, but that is another big deal in Australia, and which I'm excluded from because it goes against my beliefs. Getting drunk together, and talking about getting drunk after the weekend is a big social bonding ritual, especially among the young.

*wish I was like that with food - I certainly indulge in emotional eating

Doing my full body workout. Loving it and seeing nice results in leg strength, sleeping, and my knee swelling is getting way better! I hope my heart is getting healthier with all the dang cardio!

Would love more STRETCHING aka, yoga! I find that I am able to let go during the yoga class, but the relaxation ends there. It is puzzling how different people prefer different types of exercise, and I do think it has something to do with your muscle composition.

For me, the rowing motion and the clean and jerk motions are very satisfying. These are power-based moves, and I think that’s actually what my body is built for. (I think back to grade school and I was also the fastest runner....up to 50metres, and then I just DIED and came in last :-).

I've been fortunate enough to meet very fab you twice and seen you in action with just me and in a group. You are delightful in every way. I can better understand the appeal of the relaxing affect of alcohol - (I treat tea in a similar way as it calms me down). It's medicinal in a way (and my introverted Papa is in your camp, as are some of my friends). I'm also much impressed with how self-aware you are. That's stylish, and much love to you.

Angie I did not feel one bit judged by your response on this thread. I will try to explain. I am an extremely introverted person - I need a lot of alone time to process my experiences and am easily overwhelmed in groups. I am also easily overwhelmed by the emotions of others, or at least my perception of them. And finally I can be extremely self-conscious to the point that it inhibits my ability to participate. For this or other reasons I have a lot of anxiety when faced with the prospect of seeing a lot of people (meaning more than one at a time ). Even when I know them well, and enjoy their company.
Drinking wine (my alcohol of choice), relaxes that anxiety enough so that I can stop fretting about every individual person (especially myself) and participate. As it happens, my lifestyle includes a LOT of group meals and family gatherings - and a lot of wine!
(Sorry for the hijack!)

We've discussed alcohol before on YLF, and I can definitely say that as not a huge drinker, I feel socially marginalized and I can see the appeal. Gotta run now, but I can elaborate more later if anyone is interested.

Came back from my trip to southern California and really needed a massage after a 5 hr non stop flight. Thought I was going to workout at the hotel, but all the scheduled events prevented me from doing so.

So back to exercising and am able to use 55 lbs for lat pull downs and 10 - 15 lbs for chest presses, bicep curls, and triceps. Arms, shoulder, and back getting much stronger and arms are really looking sculpted. Starting to really like the rowing machine! At first it was somewhat intimidating, but it is really great when you finally find your rhythm.

FWIW ladies, let me put it this way, and I hope it makes sense. When you don't drink alcohol, it's hard to understand its positive affects in a social situation - simply because you have never experienced them. But I'm trying to understand, and my question was not a negative judgement against those who enjoy their drink. I am interested, and want to learn about how other people feel in certain settings. That way I can be more sensitive about the feelings of others in future. Thank you for sharing with me what you have.

Popping in to say yoga has saved both my mental health and my lower back. As a true introvert I practice at home- 30 minutes almost every day and it makes a huge difference.
And as a true introvert I find it almost impossible to get through group interactions without wine.

I’m down 8 pounds in two months. Pretty much all through diet. Ideally I’d love to lose another 10-15 pounds. My tailbone is out of alignment, for which I’m going to physical therapy. I have started being able to get back to walking, but I was going to try some yoga before this all began, and I’m going to wait a bit on that. I am working on a no snacking between meals plus a low(er) carb diet. I am encouraged that the scale is finally starting to move. I sometimes have difficulty being strict enough with myself, because I am a slippery slope kind of person.

As a fellow introvert, I fully understand where lisap is coming from. Of course people can socialize without alcohol, but it does change the dynamic, and often in a way that is difficult for introverts.

Style Fan, high five.

Meredith, I GET IT. I am a high energy extravert who is happiest when she is a very busy bee. Yoga was a challenge for me too - but I persisted, and all of a sudden you get into the groove. Things click, and you notice the benefits in everything that you do. And the more yoga you do, the more you enjoy it. It's magical. (Greg told me to do yoga - and I listened. Greg is *almost* always right!)

Anna, I KNOW. Their other studio is in Capitol Hill, but it's just a tad far for me to walk. You know what the parking is like in Capitol Hill - IMPOSSIBLE. The studio in my neck of the woods was too good to be true.....

Lisa p and Carla, you're right. Yoga works very well with other types of exercise. It's not a fast calorie burning workout, nor will you win Ironwoman if that's all you do. But the benefits are sublime. HEALTHY in the truest sense of the word.

Gradfashionista - the AMRAP is only on the last set of lifts, when the weight I've been using is starting to become 'easy'. So, if I'm doing 6 X 3 on my deadlift and I've been at the same weight for a while and it is getting easier - I do as many reps as I can on the last one. If i can do even just one more, I increase the weight at the next workout. If I do 2 or more, it is definitely time to increase the weight.

Meredith, the Tuesday night 'yoga for runners' was my gate-way into yoga. The regular teacher is a very practical person and not at all into the spiritual aspect of yoga. About 6 months after I started, we had a substitute teacher fill in for a few classes. I tried his 90 minute Saturday morning class, and I was hooked! I find the mindfulness of a good practice balances out the hecticness of weight training and intense cardio.
Interestingly, swimming seems very zen like to me since it involves breath control and repetition (laps).

Angie: I will definitely try it again. I struggle in situations where I am required to slow down and be present, but clearly both of those things are important parts of wellness. The endurance athlete in me just likes to power through the pain (physical and emotional). Not good, at least not all the time.

Another Yoga fan here. I try to go to Yoga about 4 times a week. I have also been going to some fitness classes twice a week to shake it up. I will try to keep up the Yoga this week. I am not sure about the fitness classes. Busy week. We are preparing for our trip.

Jane, you are inspiring.

gradfashionista, I was thinking of a restorative yoga class for your back - not a Yin, Hatha or Vinyasa class. Quite right. Those you have to be careful with when you have back pain. To answer your question - I do yoga for yoga and not for social. I like doing yoga in a group though. It's more zen somehow. I will have to figure out the parking somehow. (I really don't like to drive....)

Carla, I LOVE Yin yoga. You go very, very deep into a pose. For example, you hold pigeon for 8 to 10 minutes on each side. It's sooooooo nourishing.

Lisa, you'll be back on track in no time. The relaxing part is difficult, as is the fact that depending on how much people drink, or how affected they are by it, the conversation because less than stimulating for the sober. Any chance of suggesting different venues that are friendlier to non-drinkers?

Angie, ugh, that's terrible. Do you go more for the social experience or the yoga? If the latter, perhaps you could hire the teacher for private classes. Otherwise, best of luck navigating the parking! I have a few exercises for my back, but am supposed to avoid yoga because of hypermobility issues. I'll have to look into mobility work and be diligent about it, though.

Runcarla, have fun with those AMRAP--those are exhausting! I used to do them, but found that my form deteriorated throughout the set.

Jane, yeah, the data on the watch is fun, and barring weightlifting or sprinting, the heart rate monitor is pretty accurate. I haven't yet tried any of the sleep analysis programs--have you?

I’m enjoying my new Apple watch and the data!

I’ve found 7.5 hours is more than enough sleep for me during the week. It’s a great thing for me to know as if DH wakes me up with his snores, I can relax and know I can live on less sleep! Strangely reassuring!

I’ve only a few more months (I finish end of January) of studying left and I’m enjoying just about keeping everything in check, whilst I dig deep and stick to my desk at weekends and evenings. I’m still managing a good amount of steps for me per day, just ticking over is good enough for me just now.

I’m enjoying the inspiration that I get from the healthy habits post!

The YMCA where I work out has added a 'late night' (8:30 pm) yoga class on Monday nights. It is a restorative yoga class where we only do about 5 poses, but hold them for very long. We use bolsters and blocks, and wear loose warm clothes. It is surprisingly intense and I have my best sleep on Monday nights.

I increased my pause squat weight, and 'amrap'd' (as many reps as possible) my last deadlift set by 2 - so go up to a new weight this week. I am not into heavy weights, but have never tested my 1 rep max. I will be doing that during my Christmas break and hope that it will give me some insight into how strong I can get.

My goal for the next 6 months is physical rehab. I have a troublesome right sided low back/periformis issue that has become chronic and my right shoulder (old injury) is getting a little stiff again - I'd like to resolve these issues before spring.

OOOOH, Lisa. The penny dropped. The alcohol relaxed you in a really good way, and helped set your mind up "socially" for a group of people. That makes sense. I know some other people who feel similarly - at least, that is how I understand it.

Meredith, yoga can be very challenging. I hear you. It's also extremely healing. I just read a brilliant article in TIME about yoga - it's one of the best strength training workouts of them all. Nourishing, deep and with outstanding affects. It offers more all round benefits with a practice than other workouts do. If you are looking to work out, "mind, body and spirit" like I am - I firmly believe that yoga is the way to go. You have to do it consistently and for a while with good instructors. I'm into the slow and steady approach - (the tortoise won the race). I started doing yoga 4 years ago as a way to deal with my grief after losing both Jasmine and Rosie. IT HAS BEEN SUBLIME. Can't live without yoga. My body craves it.

The gym I belong rotates through emphasizing different aspects of fitness and muscle groups. I like this emphasis on total body fitness and when we target a weak area of my body I can definitely feel it! Lately the workouts have included lots of leg work with inclines on treadmill, heavier weights, and so many squats and lunges. I tried a yoga class to help stretch out some of the tight areas. Let’s just say it was a little above my skill and balance level

That's too bad about your yoga studio Angie - I know how important it is to find the right one. Re the drinking thing- I find myself getting bored pretty quickly in a group of people who are all drinking , and am now the first one to leave. I'm not an extrovert, and I suppose a glass of wine used to be my conduit to participating in social occasions.
