Hello all. I'm ready to get back on the healthy bandwagon. The last 2 weeks were filled with indulgences and a bad virus so there was no time for exercise, although I didn't have any problem feeling my cold. :)

Luckily I haven't lost much fitness so I managed a few 3 mile runs this week and have started up my strength training 3x a week. Bicycling has stopped due to the cold.

Right after Thanksgiving my blood work indicated I had slightly elevated blood sugar. I've cut out alcohol, sugar, bread, potatoes and other high glycemic foods. Since then I've lost 8 pounds. I don't know how much I might lose. My grandmother had Type 2 diabetes that she controlled through diet, and lived to be 97 YO. I'm doing this for my health. My clothes fitting better is a bonus.

BTW, I went to several holiday parties and still enjoyed myself.

Your lifting experiences might just get me to a regular gym. As it is, I do light strength training twice a week using one of those pulley contraptions.

For now, the sore point is sleep. I don't know what concrete hygiene goals to set, there.

Very timely post, as I decide whether to eat more caramel slice as a late night snack. Now I've decided not to!

MsMaven, I can't imagine an aversion to chocolate!

gradfashionista, I am always impressed by the weights you lift. My sister is enjoying crossfit, and is so much stronger now. She was talking with me yesterday about maximum exertion with exercise, and the idea that most of us don't see anyone really push themselves physically.
So my new goal is to increase my exertion and effort, whatever I'm doing, and to 'get comfortable with being uncomfortable'

GO LADIES. I'm impressed.

We over indulged during the last two and a half weeks, but that's okay. Life is planned that way, and so are our tummies. We have to live our lives!

Greg and I are on a 5 day carb-free diet - starting today and till Saturday (which is when we host another dinner party here so the carbs are back in full swing on that day).

That said, we are mindful and healthy eaters most of the time despite indulging in the naughty stuff in moderation. From Monday the 9th, I'm basing our 2017 diet on Jamie Oliver's new book - Super Food. Nutrition, food and cooking are huge passions of mine, and Jamie's philosophy has almost always resinated with my own opinions (although I do not eat mammals).

I'm back to doing regular yoga classes too. And walking with Sam is a daily event no matter what. Cheers to a happy and healthy year!

Gradfashionista, that's very impressive!

This isn't the time for me to make big plans. But this morning I threw some junk food out. And I plan to get outside between the raindrops.

Goal, to be aware of my health each day, and to make at least one healthier choice. I know that isn't the most quantifiable goal, but it's a good start for where I'm at.

I'm ready for good health. This last year was full of aches--the old hip bursitis came back. I know what to do from the the first bout I had 15 years ago: leave off activities that aggravate it and start doing more stretching, which I haven't done much of lately.

I just realized that this is the first year in ages I haven't come down with a cold after Christmas. Lots of family with or coming down with colds. So far so good. I guess I have to make it through another week before I exult.

Of course I have to lose a few holiday pounds, and right now I have an aversion to chocolate after eating so much in a short time!

This is the first New Years in several years that I already have a consistent healthy eating and workout plan in place. Some resetting after the holidays is inevitable, but overall I am continuing on with my routine. This month I'm making a special effort to take my vitamins daily and add a green smoothie at least three times a week. I keep getting sick, so I hope these additions will give my immune system a boost.

I've been making up for a big sleep debt, and feeling the better for it. After one glass of white wine at the NYE wedding, I stayed with water and a twist of lemon. As a result I feel pretty good today! Though there is a lot of food (20 people staying at the house) I have been so happy to be visiting that I haven't paid the food much attention.

I will start a new fitness journal when I get home.

For the month of January I have joined a 30 Day Challenge. It is with a group that does training here for Triathlons. The coach is a wonderful person. We log in as a group 1 hour a day an activity. It can be Yoga, Walking (those 2 will be what I will be doing), Running, Swimming, Weight Training, etc. Then we put in our HR and Wattage. Not sure what Wattage is. I am just going to put in Trilight. :)
I have already done my 1 hour of walking.
Eating is fine. For some reasons I lost 5 lbs. in Montreal. All the walking and so on. I wasn't trying but I am not complaining.

Happy New Year's!

This holiday season has involved a lot of
flying and driving, but workouts have been consistent this past week. I switched weightlifting programs and will now be doing near-daily squats and bench presses, working up to a daily minimum single rep and then a daily max. The daily minimum is a weight that you can lift even when you feel sick or tired; for the daily max, your form should be excellent and you shouldn't be grinding out the rep. This program allows you to progress at your own pace.

I squatted 180lb yesterday and benched 130lbs. Hoping to use the big plates on my bench in 2017!

Eating habits have been pretty decent and I don't feel like I've overindulged. I won't lie, part of that is due to having uninspired cooks in the household.

For those of you who've made resolutions involving a gym, January is the busiest month, so don't be discouraged by the surplus of people. By February, attendance will be back to normal and you won't have to wait as long for machines or equipment.
