I love Sezane's aesthetic, but to be honest I find their sizing to be a little all over the place. A lot of their knitwear seems to be very oversized, so there is room to size down depending on the look you prefer. I don't care for oversized and went down a size for this cardigan, could easily have gone down two sizes. For blouses and outerwear I have found the opposite, and usually go up a size. I'm mostly curvy on my bottom half, and haven't yet tried any of their pants, so I don't know about that.

I'd recommend reading their size chart carefully, and they often have a suggestion for each piece to size up or down if you are between sizes. It's also fairly easy to find blogger/YouTube reviews of a lot of their popular pieces, and they will usually mention something about the sizing. Good luck!

Ah that's a lovely cardi, neckline & all!

Sezane is a brand I've had my eye on for a while but never pulled the trigger - do you mind if I ask what the sizing is like - true to size or do you need to size up? Does it accommodate curves well? Thanks!

Zaeobi - Yes, I think I am somewhere right in the middle of soft summer/soft autumn season, can't go too cool or too warm, but always somewhat soft/muted mid-tone colors. Thank for those suggestions, I will check them out. Joules looks quite interesting, but unfortunately they don't seem to ship to my country.

I decided to order the cardigan from Sezane, and it arrived yesterday. The neckline is a little wider than I would prefer, but I love the color and softness, so I am leaning towards keeping it. Also hoping to pick up some yarn this weekend for a second cardigan, but not sure if I should go for a dark blue or soft olive...

Oh I see, that's clever to use Huggies that way - I guess another advantage of that sort of closure is not having to worry about losing the back of your earrings either! Or is that just me, lol?

Hmm you seem to favour quite different colours to me (I'm more of a Deep, Warm & sometimes Clear season) - since you mentioned Boden, have you also tried White Stuff, Fat Face & Joules? A somewhat similar style (since they're all UK high street brands).

ChristelJ - Thank you for the feedback! And always nice to meet other knitters/crafters. Adding bits of color through accessories is a great idea I think, as it can easily satisfy the urge, while not being too much of an investment. Also a great way to test out a new color, so I think that’s a good way to start for me. I am actually sewing some pink throw pillow covers, and thought I might make a little coin purse with the leftover fabric. Also just had the idea of adding some pink embroidery to a simple white t-shirt…

And yes, reaching a place where I am able to pour some energy into this feels major for me, and it is definitely a version of self care, I think!

Jenava - I need to get better at using my measurements when ordering online! I actually have my measurements written down on a note on my phone for easy reference, but somehow forget to use them. Some stores (like Boden for example, which is where I recently made one of my failed purchases) even have the garment measurements listed.

I think another challenge for me is that I haven’t been in stores and tried things on for quite some time, and with changing styles and cuts, I don’t have a good grasp on what fits me anymore. For example, I ordered a bunch of sweaters last month from & Other Stories, and failed to notice that they all had fairly voluminous sleeves, which looked ridiculous on me. Also, after sending back a variety of wide leg pants, I have learned that I need my pants to be fairly fitted around the hips and upper thigh, so a slightly flared shape works better for me. Lesson learned, even if it’s a slow journey. :)

I sympathize! I find myself thinking a lot about what to wear and then not being totally happy with what I'm actually wearing in the end, and I'm not even ill!

May I suggest that you measure yourself and use those measurements when purchasing online? It's not foolproof, as individual items vary and not all brands/shops are good about accuracy. But I've found it does help a lot to get the right size.

Quietloud, I am another who can relate to health challenges robbing one of the joy of style. It has been up and down for me the last several years with major life changes at the same time as ongoing health issues. The fact that you are interested in finding style joy again sounds like the beginning of a very valuable time where you have rediscovered or maybe are expanding your version of self care. I am all for bits of color making their way easily into one's life at such a time. When I was going through a rough time a couple years ago, the Fabbers here recommended getting easily aquired things such as accessories to cheer me up, and one orange scarf I then bought went with me everywhere. I still get happy when I see it, not only from the gorgeous color, but from the memories of caring coming from this community and from myself.

As a knitter, I really love that you find pleasure in the yarn colors and textures and can relate to that too. Playing with yarn can be very healing, meditative, soothing, joyful, creative and timeless. I love that you enjoy the process by using that wonderful mantra. Inspiring!

Zaeobi - The hoops snap closed, so no worries about losing them! It was such a small thing, but felt good to use the creative part of my brain just a tiny bit!

I also think it would be a good strategy to plan my outfits in advance, to make things a little easier for everyday, and also to make sure I use the things that I have, so that’s a great idea!

Star - Thank you for your feedback! I do think you are right that I have a decent starting point, just need to figure out the right pieces to add some interest and personality, within my new comfort restrictions. I think my current craving for color and variety has a lot to do with my life being so restricted at the moment - just missing some variety in general, and perhaps my wardrobe being one of the few places I can be more playful.

Rejoiceandbe - Thank you for your advice, I very much appreciate hearing from others who have gone through similar situations. I do have some knitting ideas for the coming season, although knitting is a very slow process for me so needs to be planned months in advance of when I want to be wearing the pieces! But I have been thinking about making a lightweight cardigan for spring/summer, and have plans for a camisole or two. Hoping to get to the yarn store this week to have a look at some colors. There is very much a self care aspect to knitting - it is both meditative and distractive as a practice, and it also lends a sense of control and accomplishment. I have this sort of mantra that I repeat in my head when I get impatient with my makes, whether I make for myself or others - I’m devoting this time making something for you (or myself) because I love and care about you, and because you deserve to have something beautiful. That tends to make me slow down and enjoy the process more.

Your post resonates with me on a number of level. I too have gone through significant health problems and have felt lost as a result of my changing body and its unpredictable sensory messages. You have received lots of good advice from others, which I can't better. However a have a few comments about what I found worked for me. 1.Daily Makeup. The amount and complexity need not be to complicated but enhancing what it is about you that you WANT to enhance gives you 2 bonuses. You look good AND it gives you some control over your body.
2. Hair care. Again for me, worth expending energy on. (See above)
3.Knitting. You obviously have a good eye for colour and use yarn which has a nice handfeel to it. You also say that it gives you pleasure.....so why don't you make yourself some cotton or silk summer tops. I suspect that yarn that is pleasant to knit with is also pleasant and easy to wear.
Good luck in your journey.

I had a browse through your Finds and I really like these pieces. I think they are a good base to work with. Once you add pops of colour, either in the way of accessories or tops or toppers or whatever, you will have a fab wardrobe. It does not look overly sporty or boring or practical to me. I have been a very colourful, eclectic dresser all my life and am now veering towards neutrals with a few selected saturated brights. This formula seems to suit my silver hair which I have grown in in the last 2 years.

That's very creative of you RE: the earrings! Did they attach to one another? I'd try something similar but I'd be worried about losing one (but you're probably not as clumsy & messy as I am when it comes to this sort of thing lol).

If it helps, I also like to plan my outfits for the week by hanging the basics up on the back of my door - I put each day's underpinnings & clothes on a separate hanger, but also add accessories if I have any in mind (e.g. I hang a pouch of potential jewellery on the hanger). It saves me energy on the day, but it also helps me to remember some of the jewellery that I can't store out (due to lack of countertop space).

Thank you again to all of you who responded to my post, I appreciate it so much. You have given me a lot to think about, and I really felt like it helped unlock a creative block. I spent the weekend reflecting on some of the things you said, and reading on the forum, as well as going through my wardrobe once again, doing some more editing.

Zaeobi - that is a GREAT point re. jewelry storage - I keep most of mine in a large jewelry case in the back of my closet! So I do suppose it’s no wonder I don’t reach for more of my pieces. I’ll be looking for a glass topped bowl or box to keep on my vanity and store a selection of pieces there (and curate on a regular basis). I had a rummage through and pulled out two pairs of small gold hoops that I had in there, and instead of wearing them as two separate pairs I linked them together for a more dangly effect and wore them this weekend.

Also, thank you for the link you posted, I will definitely check it out. I know that a lot of my frustration is rooted in my mental state more than my actual wardrobe at the moment, and it’s something I am trying to work through, while also trying to add some joy through what I am wearing. :)

Like I said, I went through my wardrobe again this weekend for a final edit, and now I am left with only the things I can actually wear right now, that fit and are comfortable enough. I decided to keep two pairs of jeans, which I think I will be able to wear in the coming months, since I am usually in less pain when the weather gets warmer, and both of those are soft and have good stretch. The blue also gives me a little more color to work with. I have added everything to my finds (except for my handmade knitwear, but that’s also not as relevant for the coming warmer months, and also excluding occasion wear and basic tees and tanks), and what strikes me when I look at it all together is that it currently looks much more sporty and less feminine and elegant than I prefer. It looks like a very practical capsule wardrobe lacking in personality, which definitely reflects the lack of joy I am feeling about it.

I was chatting a bit about this topic with my husband this weekend, and he reminded me that my impulsive purchases are usually the ones I am most happy with, and that stays in my wardrobe for the longest time (which kind of goes agains all common advice!). An example is my green cashmere wool coat, which is the most expensive and possibly best purchase I have ever made (bought on a late summer day in august 2016, still in sandals and short sleeves, I was killing time browsing a shop while waiting for my train). It has been my main winter coat every year since, and this winter my mother even asked if it was a new coat. I also tend to find the best things while traveling, or browsing vintage shops. Of course this isn’t quite as easy with online shopping, but I think I should maybe follow my gut more when it comes to shopping, and not overthink everything in terms of practicality.

I also spent some time reflecting on color, and what I’ve enjoyed wearing in the past. I always come back to neutrals, but I have experimented with lots of colors in the past, so I tried to think about what I have enjoyed wearing before. Obviously a long time ago now, but in my late teens as I was starting to explore my personal style, I went through a phase of wearing everything blue. Thinking back it was probably the color of the year in 1998 or something, and I was buying a lot of clothes back then, but looking at photos I really love the cohesiveness of the different shades, and can see that certain kinds of blues are really good on me. Perhaps it is also a clue that I have lots of grayish blue shades in my home (paired with warm wood tones, beige and camel, as I prefer a look that isn’t too cool in temperature overall).

Another color that stands out in memory is a peachy/salmon pink dress that I wore a lot in my 20’s. I wore a lot of colorful vintage dresses at the time, but I always defaulted back to that one. A pink dress would be way too much for me right now, but I am wondering if I could add that color in smaller doses in some way? Just a whim…

(Some colors that have not worked well for me are pastels (went through a phase of wearing a lot of seafoam and minty greens, and pastel pink, and it completely washed me out) and neons/very bright colors.)

Based on this, and what I already have in my wardrobeI tried putting together a color palette (using balls of yarn, since I am a knitter) below. Like I said, I think the pink is more of a whim (I am feeling spring in the air and have some peachy pink tulips on the table in front of me), but it’s nice to experiment.

Welcome to the YLF forum! Pain & illness can really put a damper on feeling motivated with your closet, can't it?

You mentioned that you don't wear your earrings much, even though you like them - May I ask where you store them? I find that 'out of sight out of mind' makes a big difference to how often I use my accessories! Maybe keeping a few pairs out on your dresser (rather than hidden in a drawer) could make them more accessible to you?

I know it's not the same but after my fall in January, I was also hesitant to get dressed (let alone snap outfit photos & discuss style with others!) I was resigned to just a pair of sandals at first (wide enough to fit my swollen toes) - I didn't see any point in buying new shoes when my issue would last 'only' 12 weeks. But 3 months (my predicted recovery timeline) is a long time to be uncomfortable in your body - let alone 4 years! I had a similar issue in 2019 too, where I was stuck with a cane for a few months (I also had to travel in that time, & just couldn't be arsed to put together a capsule wardrobe for myself whilst in that condition).

Other people have given some great suggestions here already, but I just wanted to add that it can sometimes be a Catch 22 situation when we don't treat ourselves with the kindness we deserve (no matter what our bodies are going through) that we end up feeling even deeper in the hole. What helped me was:
1) taking a step back first & evaluating my situation - if the overwhelm is in part affected by your own feelings it will persist, irrespective of how well the clothes fit or are constructed.
2) prioritising things that made me happy then slotting in my constrictions into that (instead of the other way around) - just a psychological shift around having to 'compromise' with different clothes VS 'What if I bought a jumper in my favourite orange colour AND it happened to be non itchy/ non clingy wool?' Your exact preferences may differ to mine.
3) Buying a few key things that honour my new body but also my old preferences (e.g. the physical outcome of manifesting #2's thinking). For me, these included some scarves that were lightweight but stayed in place, because I usually overheat & constantly pulling a sleeved topper on & off with a cane sucks!

---
Lastly, have you read The Kindness Method by Shahroo Izadi? Here's a podcast where she discusses some of the aspects:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=44iAPrQoYU8
Big disclaimer: By recommending this, I am NOT saying you can magically 'fix' yourself with 'positive thinking' ! Please don't be put off by the title that the author lost 120kg - the focus here isn't actually any end 'result' but rather how you talk to yourself (& how we would never talk to someone dealing with the same things in this way), since you're with your body for life. I'm adding this just because you mentioned feelings of sadness, frustration & deeper issues - hopefully it helps with that?

I am late to this - welcome to the forum! I think you have a good plan and I don’t have more specific ideas.

My Mum had rheumatoid arthritis for almost 30 years so I know some of the battles illness can cause - and having the right clothes is important - both practically so they are comfortable but also to help with your identity.

I am really overwhelmed by your kind replies and support, you don’t know how much it means. I had a feeling you might understand my situation. From reading here in the past I’ve gotten the sense that this is such a warm and supportive community, and I was absolutely right. And so many great suggestions, you have given me lots of ideas, and new hope!

My thoughts so far, after reading and trying to digest…

As far as colors go, I’m not expecting to go full on rainbow, as I do love my neutrals, and I also don’t think I suit a lot of colors (I have pale olive skin that can VERY easily look sickly in the wrong tones), but have found a few that I like - soft, earthy greens are a favorite. I already have a mossy green wool winter coat, an olive trench coat and a light/soft olive spring jacket, so green is a safe color for me. I would also like to introduce some blues, like muted navy and indigo/denim blue, and maybe some kind of lighter blue. I do also have some beige knitwear and trench coat, and some white tops that I can still wear (I used to wear A LOT of white shirts and blouses, but most of them are now too structured/rigid - these days I need to be nap ready at all times). And I am keeping my black because I do like it, just would like some more alternatives.

I pretty well stocked on basics, that is actually the one area where I’ve been able to stay updated, so underwear, socks, basic camisoles and tees, etc are pretty well covered.

Thank you to those of you who mentioned accessories - I could definitely up my accessory game, that is a great idea for somewhere to start. I’ve never been great at accessorizing, as I don’t like feeling too fussy. Bracelets, and to some extent necklaces, are a bit difficult for me due to sensory issues, but I love earrings. I have one pair that I wear most days (diamond studs with an ear jacket add on, so semi-statement-y), but I would love to expand my collection (I do own more earrings, I just rarely wear them). I actually used to love wearing statement earrings once upon a time, though I am not sure what that would look like now…You got me thinking, maybe also hair accessories…I try to do my makeup most days, but I don’t always have the energy to wash and style my hair, so I am trying to come up with new, easy ways of putting my hair up.

Scarves are also great for me as I have difficulty with temperature regulation, so layering is always a good idea. I have some large blanket scarves (a couple in wool, and a few lightweight ones in linen and woven cashmere), but they are all in neutrals (of course - charcoal, camel and dove grey). This could be a great way to introduce a little color.

My activities these days are limited - I stepped down from work after Christmas and am not sure when/if I will be back, so for now I am at home most days. I try to get out for a little while every day, whether that’s going for a walk or doing an errand or two, but I also need to rest/nap a lot in between activities (most activities being very slow ones like reading, knitting, cooking, etc. Also trying to get a very gentle yoga routine going). So I definitely want to be focusing on homewear at the moment. In an ideal world I would have a wardrobe that is soft and comfortable enough for lounging, that also feels presentable enough to pop outside in OR is easy to dress up if going outside by just swapping or adding an item. I know that athleisure has been big since covid, but that doesn’t really feel like me, as my style has always been more dressy and structured. In my head a good combination would be a wide leg or flared soft pant, a stretchy top that is slightly more elevated than a basic tee, and soft knitwear for layering (sweater/cardigan/scarves). For those of you who recommended adding color through tops and toppers, I think that’s a good idea.

One of my most recent orders were the Hampshire Jersey trousers from Boden. I got both the wide leg and the slim ones in black in UK size 12P. The wide leg ones were way too big, so I sent them back. The slim ones were better, but after wearing for about an hour they stretched out and started sagging, so I really regret keeping them now. I might as well wear my joggers (which are slim, without ankle cuffs, and with back welt pockets, so look slightly more dressy than regular sweatpants). I’m really tempted to re-order the wide leg ones in a size down (and in navy), but since I am in a non-EU country the shipping and taxes are really high, so making a mistake gets expensive quickly. For the last Boden order I paid about €60 total for the shipping and the return. I also just saw that they have added a flared version of the Hampshire trousers, which I think suit my shape even better (I am 5’4, with slightly short legs, pear leaning towards hourglass shape).

I am also considering the Gaspard Cardigan from Sezane in the Vintage Blue. I think it could be a versatile piece both for layering as a cardigan and wearing on its own as a sweater. I also love the color and think it could work with both black, and also navy if I decide to introduce that.

Roberta - I think a personal shopper is a really great idea. I would love to do that, and have actually tried to find someone, but sadly it doesn’t seem to be a thing where I live (small European country). I have considered doing something online, but I’m not sure that would be equally worth it, as a big hurdle for me is actually getting out there and doing the shopping.

rachylou - I am so sorry you had to go through that. I can definitely sympathize! I’ve had days where I can’t leave the house because my pants just hurt too much! I do realize that it will take a lot of time and money to rebuild my wardrobe, and I think that is part of what overwhelms/paralyzes me. But like you say, maybe getting a few outfits to begin with, without thinking *too much* about the big picture, is a better way to start. I think I might have been too focused on planning and having it all figured out from the start, that it has made it difficult to get going with anything.

Suz - Yes, changing silhouettes is also a whole new challenge! I am kind of loving a lot of the trends I am seeing at the moment, probably because it’s a throwback to the 90’s when I was a teenager and was first starting to experiment with my style, so it feels safe/familiar in a way. I do want to dip my toe into it and want to feel more updated, but am also worried about looking like I am trying to hard (having visions of my own mother in the 90’s being excited that the flared pants from *her* teens were coming back - I was so embarrassed!).

Sloper - So sorry to hear that you are also struggling with chronic health issues. It really is tough. Now is really the first time in 4 years that I have felt like I wanted to or even been able to put effort into style and getting dressed, and it really does feel like a milestone. Stepping down from work has given me a little more time and energy, but I also think it’s partly thanks to the group therapy that I’ve been in (related to my condition), where the doctors have really stressed the importance of life quality, and that even though we are ill we also have the right to spend time on things that make us feel good. For me I’ve realized that clothing is such a huge part of who I am that I do want to dedicate more time to it when I am able to. I hope you are also able to, in time. <3

Joy - I am sorry to hear about your health struggles. I can empathize with your challenges, and that is A LOT of them at once. I also moved 8 months ago - not downsizing, but I think it has contributed to my feeling a bit lost as I don’t feel quite settled and organized yet. I have spent a lot of time cleaning out my wardrobe and have gotten rid of things that are old and outdated and things that I will likely never fit into again. Pieces that I love but can’t wear because of health issues I’ve put in storage, that way they are not distracting me, but if my circumstances should change they are available to me.

So a game plan so far, based on your comments:

Try to get at least one full outfit to start with - preferably a homewear outfit that is more dressed up than sweats.

Using toppers (like cardigans/knitwear) to introduce some color, but also agree with Angie that bottoms are first priority.

Focus more on accessories, look for earrings, scarves and maybe also hair accessories.

Again, thank you so much for all of your replies and ideas! Would love to hear all and any other feedback you might have.

I can so relate to this, and there are several of us here in this not so fun club. You will find a lot of empathy here.

You haven't said where you are making orders, but as far as soft, stretchy and non-restrictive clothing, I have a lot of success with Athleta and J Jill. Between the two I like the styles of Athleta (look at the "city pants" choices) better, but neither is high fashion. I don't feel super stylish but I feel acceptably put together and more importantly, I own no clothes that cause me pain.

I try to add some expression through scarves and jewelry. Is this an option for you? For a quicker fix, that might help you feel more interested in your black outfits if you can add something to them that you consider more fun.

Welcome, quiet loud! You are not alone. My story is that I found YLF thinking I could fix everything. I now know it is a journey and everything is constantly changing. Like Rachylou, I have Diabetes, but Type 2 although insulin dependent. My wardrobe has become ruled by doctors. I think of it as a challenge each day. I can only wear elastic pull-on waists and flat footwear, so had to get rid of all jeans, heels and sandals. I lost a lot of weight and now am 76 years old, beyond menopause. I must try on everything to be sure it will work with a glucose meter attached to my stomach. Add to that downsizing and moving to a different climate and I have felt I have lost my way. Think of your restrictions as a challenge. Wardrobe building is slow work and a good distraction. Go to thrift shops and consignment shops if you can not find what you like at retail. Get rid of what does not fit. And, as said, start with foundation garments. For the first time I may hang on to some some wardrobe items that do not fit, planning to gain weight again if meds are changed. The problem is there is no room to keep much.

I am very sorry to hear hear about your health situation, it must be very hard. You can use fashion or whatever else you need to make you feel better, it is not frivolous at all, I'd consider it a good manner of therapy. About 10 years ago I was going through a serious health issue for about 2 years and thinking about clothes and dressing occupied my overactive brain enough not to constantly be in a state of high anxiety.

I like the idea of starting with one perfect for you outfit and expanding from there. I would also enlist any trusted friends/relative to help you if there is someone whose fashion taste you like. And of course, the YLF forum is always here! Posting pictures if you are comfortable (you can always cover/edit your face for privacy if you wish) can be very helpful in troubleshooting fit and other issues.

Quietloud - sorry to hear of your health issues and I am totally on board with dressing up to make myself feel better. When I am dealing with health issues or feeling a bit heavier than I would like, taking time with dressing well helps me regain a sense of control and optimism that the health issue or weight gain is not going to get the better of me and retain my sense of self.

What may be useful is to put together a list of activities that you do and a mood board of looks and items that you like to inspire you. Milestone birthdays can be tough, but they do inspire self-reflection, I hope your 40's are your best decade yet!

Wait, are you me? No - of course not, but so similar. My heart goes out to you (especially re: the black joggers every day, sigh).

I'm also dealing with some chronic things, especially a very psychologically trying mobility issue. And fatigue, etc. I just don't have the energy (or balance) to try on outfits and reorganize the closet. My body has changed quite a bit too.

So, I'm actually trying NOT to buy right now. Though I certainly miss my fashion play time.

A few things I have bought, that seem to help and that I can use, are a new special bag, some colorful and fun Nike's, a bright bandana. Cheerfully colored small things give me a boost, and I sometimes get a nice compliment on them too, which helps my confidence.

I'm at home most of the time, though. I like Brooklyn's idea above about updated at-home wear.

So sorry to hear what you are going through, and I don’t think it’s wrong to use fashion as a source of comfort and joy in life. I do too.

If you are spending most of your time at home, I would concentrate on elevated home wear. I think there are a lot of options because post pandemic many people still work from home. Examples: how about some velvet pants in winter? I wear velvet jeans at home in winter at it gives me a lift. (They are soft and washable too.) Or you could go for the newer wide leg cargo style pants in a fleece/sweatshirt fabrication. I got some recently from ASOS for home wear (sorry, no find, but they are around). Or a tie dye or floral sweatshirt. Or a really luxurious cashmere sweater (if that’s more your style).

So sorry for what you are going through ... clothes are not frivolous is they have the potential to make you feel a little happier or more confident in facing your situation! Echoing the suggestions you have here, and all I can add is to consider what is your "must do" to feel like you ... when I was a new mom, exhausted and struggling to shower daily, I would still somehow find a way to put on makeup during the day (not fancy ... like concealer, mascara and lipstick). If I did that, it was sort of my declaration that I was still me in the face of challenges! Obviously not the same situation, but perhaps you have a certain something you could commit to doing daily - your hair, wearing a favourite colour, whatever it might be, that might give you a boost Good luck xo

I'm so sorry you're dealing with chronic pain. That definitely makes shopping and decision-making a more taxing experience in every way. And changing sizes also makes it confusing. Not to mention the change in silhouettes over the past few years -- if you haven't been purchasing much, it can be difficult to get the new stuff to work with the old.

But looking your best will help you feel your best, so rebuilding your wardrobe is definitely not frivolous!

Many of us come to YLF after significant life changes or challenges -- major size change, illness, pregnancy, empty nest, change of job, move, etc. So I'm sure others will weigh in with great advice and the wisdom of experience.

I had to build a wardrobe after changing size and not having bought clothes for a very long time. Rachy's right -- it took time, and patience.

I also agree with Angie's advice -- start with the basics -- hair, undies, eyewear or other always-worn accessory.

I think Rachy's also right that considering your activities (even if they are constrained) and asking yourself where and when you most feel the need of a fashion boost is key. If you want a few more (and different) outfits for at home wear, then put your energy and budget towards those, first. For instance, as the seasons change, maybe you need some amazing linen separates with elasticized waist at back (for comfort) and a slightly oversized cut?

Posting photos is a great way to get assistance here, if you feel comfortable with that.

You can do this! You will soon be feeling much more like yourself again.
