medusa, I lived near Heidelberg for 10 years! Heidelberg Hauptstrasse is the longest pedestrian (traffic free) shopping street in Europe - it's 2 kilometers long! ALL of the shops are incredible and the winter markets will be decked out in holiday splendor. I love the traditions there! There are SO many unique clothing and jewelry boutiques! If you want specifics, please ask.

What to buy? Clothes, jewelry, coffee, chocolate. Ritter Sport is the best 'everyday' chocolate in many flavors, some seasonal. All good.

The hotel pictured is my favorite place to stay in Heidelberg. The Goldene Rose. It's off the main street on a quiet little alley. Lovely.

Frankfurt has a very famous shopping street, Zeil. You can find all the department and chain stores in the country on the Zeil. Heidelberg has a lot of small boutiques.

Oh Deborah, the candied nuts! The selection is amazing!! I wanted to add that my list for fashion is somewhat short because generally the proportions of the clothing in Germany don't really work for me as you can imagine. I don't think petite clothing even exists! That's why I go for the shoe stores!!! Hopefully some of our Germany forum members will chime in with better suggestions!

Edited to add a picture of a candied nut & chocolate displays - I think this was in Frankfurt.

What a great time of year to be visiting Germany. I love the Christmas markets, mostly for the food! Be sure to try the gluhwein (hot mulled wine) and bundle up because it will be cold. The sausages are wonderful, candied nuts, potato pancakes - it's all so good. You will probably be able to find some unique German Christmas ornaments, and I used to buy wooden German toys for the kids.

I've never been to Dresden, but have visited Heidelberg several times. The castle there is not to be missed.

Shana has you sorted for fashion shopping. Have a wonderful trip and take some photos to share with us!

Hmmm, where to start??? We usually bring back an entire suitcase of sweets and food items but I am guessing you are looking for fashion related items!! Nuremberg is supposed to have one of the best xmas markets too and having been to a few, I find most of them are the same. Honestly, you'll find alot of made in China junk along with handmade european treasures (I don't think they require country of origin labeling). I would definitely go - it's a totally fun experience, especially if you grab a nice warm mug of gluhwein.

In terms of fashion outlets, I generally hit Zara, Benneton, Mango, Mexx, H&M and Esprit. I know that some of these stores have outlets here in the US but none are near me. I stock up on Nivea lotion (it's different) and LaBello lip balms. I love the selection of hosiery - especially Falke and warm weather alternatives. Oh and the shoes!! OMG, you must go shoe shopping!!! It's shoe heaven, especially for comfy but fashionable shoes as long as you don't mind the prices.

Tomorrow I'm heading to Germany for work, and it just occurred to me to see if anyone on the forum has any secret (or not-so-secret) shopping suggestions for while I'm there - any fab stores or items to look for?

I'm going to visit Heidelberg and Dresden, and passing through Frankfurt. I do know that the Dresden Christmas market is supposed to be amazing, but it's not exactly style-oriented.
