Cathy, Lisa, rosebud, taylor, Marianna, Khris - You ladies rock!! Thanks so much for all the wonderful information. DH also says to tell you how much it is appreciated.

Khris, we will be driving from Vegas to LA, not sure what route. It will be awesome if we could meet up! I'll keep you posted :-)

Still no luck on the flat boots and trench front I'm hoping to find those in SFO.

You're going to have to pack heavy, because you're going from one extreme to another. I'm halfway between LA and Vegas, and our weather for next week is supposed to be nice- 70's/80's, but Death Valley that will still be up near triple digits and the bay area is in the 60's, but feels colder the closer you are to the water. If you are driving the 15 from LA to Vegas- we may be able to meet up. Let me know if you have a chance.

Ha - the periphery of Westgate is certainly the place to be!

Vani, if you are interested in art, the DeYoung and SFMOMA are both great museums. There is also apparently a wonderful exhibit at the Jewish Contemporary Museum (I don't know the exact name) about Sendak, coinciding well with the Wild Things movie.

taylor, pretty amazing what time can do, huh? hope you had some great memories...

marianna, yes, westgate inside is pretty much a ghost town. of course, ross is going strong, as is the orange julius (plus neighboring kiddie rides and change machine, lol). fyi, the orange julius recipe has changed. sooo disappointing!

valco is still hanging on, amazingly. even more of a ghost town than westgate. they always seem in a perpetual state of construction. a new AMC theater might be helping with business...aside from todai, i tend to gravitate towards fresh choice, the lingerie stores and jcpenny's, lol...but, i only visit a few times a year.

however, the ice rink is still open, as is the indoor bowling alley 'strikes' (never checked it out, though).

vani, sorry for taking over your thread!

Great advice all around. I just got back from San Jose and it was very warm. We had a few super rainy days too, though. But definitely not cold...

Lisa, do people actually shop INSIDE Westgate? I always thought that people only went to the big stores (Nordstrom Rack, ON, Target, etc). I haven't been inside the actual mall in ages. The stores don't seem all that great. I used to go to Tova Yaron day spa to get my eyebrows done... worst salon ever! I haven't been downstairs in a while, but I do remember the modeling place and an Orange Julius. Not sure if they're still there!

What about Vallco? It's dead, isn't it? Do you know of any plans for improvement? My mom and I wanted to eat at Todai one day and even that restaurant was closed! I always thought Todai was super busy. At least Sears is still kicking.

westgate shopping mall is alive, kicking, and larger. saratoga lanes is now a townhouse community (sniff)...the only downstairs area of westgate i recall is a little dance studio and maybe barbizon modeling or something? hhhmmm, now i'm curious...

lol, no problem vani! i'm just vicariously living out your CA trip ;-D

everyone's advice is great, especially the waterproof/resistant coat/jacket. it was sprinkling today, and i'm not sure if your leather NAS jacket has been treated for dodgy weather (?)

the tote will be great (especially if it is water-resistant and with a top zipper, just to minimize pick-pockets). not saying anything would happen, of course! if nothing else, it will keep your stuff nice and dry.

flat boots are great! however, just be sure they are comfy and go the distance. break them in a few days before your trip, if possible. dr. scholl's, band-aids and blister stuff might be a little extra something to consider...sorry for the bummer report, i just had flashbacks of a few break-ins gone wrong!

good luck with your search!!!

Wow, great packing list. DEFINITELY prepare for some rain - it can be a bit unpredictable. It poured for part of today, and I'm not sure what the weekend is supposed to be like in SF this week.

My friend was in Pasadena this past weekend and it was 90...so I guess I am saying that layers are key!

Lisa has an excellent list! I would only add a lightweight waterproof/resistant coat, since the weather this time of year is unpredictable. It was raining off and on all day today, from light sprinkles to sunshine to sudden downpour.

For great food (restaurants, small shops, farmer's market), check out the Ferry Building in SF. Chinatown is fun to get the bustling Chinese experience, with little dim sum eateries, fishmongers (live fish swimming in window-display tanks) , souvenir shops, jewelry shops, etc. For upscale shopping, check out Union Square. For the funky and hip(pie), the Haight (Haight-Ashbury) has vintage shops and boutiques.

Have fun on your trip!

Wow! You are simply awesome cyan (Lisa, right?)!! Thank you SO much for taking the time giving me so much information. I'm going to print this out I wish I had been able to find a pair of nice fitting flat boots. I'm very tempted to buy an inexpensive pair of flat slouchy boots to wear on the trip - that would be perfect.

I've also been looking for a trench but haven't found anything lightweight, good looking and budget friendly I do have the leather jacket from the NAS, so I'm hoping that will do the trick. Other than that I think I have enough items to layer and mix-match.

Oh, and I need a nice looking tote too, and I'm hoping I'll find something in the next few days.

woohoo! sounds like you have a fun itinerary planned...(warning: long post!)

i live in the bay area, and would recommend layers for SF, to combat dodgy weather (68F day/56F night this weekend) and lots of walking. the list below tends to be my personal approach. take from it what you will!

comfy shoes--flats, flat/low-heeled boots, converse, evening shoes that you can walk in (if you go out on the town). whatever you have on hand.

denim--skinny, straight and/or trouser, whichever suits your style and shoe selection best (and can be tucked into boots if needed!)

hosiery--leggings and/or patterned stockings to wear with boots and skirt/dress.

dresses--if you wear them, jersey doesn't wrinkle, and can be worn with boots + leggings/stockings; if it can't be remixed for an evening dinner look, toss in a more
polished one.

skirts--if you wear them, a-line or pencil. dark denim holds shape and wrinkles less.

tops--whatever you like. smart casual pieces that can be worn with either pants/skirts, depending on your preference. cardigans are great layering pieces.
if your style, add a belt or two over tops, cardigans, sheath dress...

jacket--anything smart casual, and/or a knee length trench and light-mid-weight wool coat when the chill sets. looks great with skirts/dresses as well as pants.

accessories--fun scarves you can mix/match, fun jewelry to dress up more casual outfits, tote bag for daytime trots (holds water bottle, maps, camera/phone, sweater, wallet, travel-size umbrella, snacks, etc...evening purse, sunglasses.

i think angie mentioned a ranking: 1) glasses/sunglasses, 2) watch, 3) statement earrings OR statement necklace...(???)

if taking public transport, remember to bring $1 bills and quarters. most if not all require exact change to board.

FYI, i was in LA 2 weekends ago, and dealt with similar autumn weather! however, you might want to ask your friends/relatives what to pack. you might need a comfy pair of walking sandals, but as long as you have layers to work with, it should be easy! ;-)

i don't know about the vegas scene, but if you and DH plan on hitting the bar/club/lounge, you might want to pack something dressy nice as well. don't take my word for it though!

for the road trip, tops that won't wrinkle/show stains, comfy denim for lots of sitting/driving/popping out to take pics. i drove with my sister and her 2 kids (4 & 2) from the bay area to disneyland; my soho bootcut denim, converse, jersey knit top and cardigan held out great!

hope you have a great trip, sounds like so much fun!

After making a solemn oath to see more of the country this year, DH and I decided to spend a week exploring a little of California. After a hectic past few work weeks, this will be a welcome change.

We have cousins in Fremont/SF and friends in LA and would like to spend a day or two in Vegas. Only confirmed plans as of the moment, are to spend the coming weekend in SF and the weekend after that in LA. We've read about the wonderful scenic drive from SF to Vegas (covering Death Valley etc.) and are contemplating spending a few days on the road just taking in the sights.

I was wondering if all you lovely ladies in the area could give me suggestions on things to see, do and most importantly places to shop :-D. What is the weather like these days? I would also appreciate if you could help me create a packing list as I would like to decide if I want to check in a bag or not (I'm obssessive compulsive about traveling light while flying).

Much thanks in advance!
