Thanks Gigi! Those skinnies are sure polarizing. I wonder if opinions when I wear them are as varied.

Jenni, thanks for the compliment on the shorts outfit. If “mom jeans” actually meant jeans for a middle-aged mom”, I’d agree. But it’s a pejorative, meant to put down the fashion sensibility of “moms”. When it warms up a bit, I’ll give them a spin & see what I, and the forum, think.

Cee, he’s a goofball!

It’s good to see you! I think you’re looking amazing in the shorts outfit.
I find the chinos too big with the pink pants a good size.
Does it really matter if the denim shorts are “Mom shorts”? I mean you are a middle-aged Mom, and also as you say “Mom” cuts are more fashionable at the moment anyway?
I remember my DD2 being quite critical of my clothing when she was a teenager. Mind you, I may have gained quite a lot more fashion knowledge since then since she is now 26. However she has also become kinder with adulthood

Thanks Shevia! What I read out of my son’s descriptions is:

•he finds the cut of the jeans shorts problematic. I used to wear them, when I started at YLF, before I gained too much weight. There was always very conspicuous silence about them, so he may have a point there. But if he is correct that they are “mom shorts”, then maybe they are more in style than he realizes.

•His comments on the plaid and raspberry shorts are specifically related to the patterns, so I will ignore them, because he clearly favors much more subdued colors and patterns than I do.

•The jury is out on the floral shorts. They were in one of my very first posts here. I sent that pic to a friend a couple months ago to say what I *don’t* want my legs to look like—skinny, with no definition. I’m slowly getting them built up. Those shorts are so full, they’re almost like a skirt. I will evaluate carefully before wearing them, to see if they highlight curves in my legs.

So even though he is being a goofball in his descriptions, I think I can use them constructively, which is why I continue to ask for his comment.

Joy, with climate change, I’m not sure what to say. When we arrived in August 2018, temps were in the 90s for days. Then last year we waited for summer weather to come, and it never really did until a warm (not hot) spell in September or October. The pic of me in shorts was taken today, so I’d say yes, it is warm enough for shorts—at least for now. It was nearly 70 today, and is predicted to be that warm for several days.

My opinion of both pairs of pants is tied up in how I feel about my body right now--pleased to be slimmer, but not "skinny", not pleased at the absence of any detectable booty.

Thanks MsMaven! I can evaluate them again in a few months, have pretty much set my birthday in August as the date I am at my "final" weight. If I can't lose 20 lb by then, I probably won't be able to lose it.

@Fashintern - I think pink pants fit you nicely. I'm usually shy about wearing light-colored pants or jeans really fitted and like to add something loose on top - usually boyfriend shirt worn opened with tank top. Of course it's just me - you do you . Shrunken knit top plus khaki pants plus chunky sport shoes sounds like fun.
"Fit lab" for me means trying different ideas for styling one particular piece - "outfit lab" would be the right term to use. I apologize if that sounded confusing/misleading/strange.
I'm happy for you enjoying your warm ( or warm-ish :) ) weather and modeling your spring clothes - rock on !

For those “meeting” my son for the first time, his comments are partially my own fault. He used to try to find something nice to say about everything or to worm his way out of it when I asked his opinion. But it’s just the two of us, so sometimes I want another opinion. I make him give me explanations instead of just “no” because then I can decide (quietly, in my own head) if I agree with him or not. But the creativity is all him!

Slim cat, the pink pants look like leggings? They are actually medium-weight denim with 3% Lycra. I’m not sure what you mean by “fit lab”.

Toronto, lol. Such a joy at this age, aren’t they? I’ve got to say though that gingham would probably be too much for me as well.

Kathie, the khakis were a bit distressed new—no actual holes, but a couple very roughed-up spots. Also, they’ve been folded up in a trunk, so are very rumpled. If I choose to wear any of the shorts, it will be for general life in the city, but not for work.

Rachylou, too big. Woweeee! I got them quite a while ago, haven’t been thin enough for them ever since. I am *not* hip-hop, but I am thinking of wearing them with a “shrunken” knit top, might pair them with clunky white tennis shoes in the summer. I have another 15-20 lb to lose, so the final verdict isn’t in on the pink pants yet; my calves may get thinner. But actually, I’m taking the “calf-suckiness” as a positive sign. Last time I was close to this weight, I noticed that my legs were skinny, with no shape to them, so I’ve been trying to add muscle. I’m psyched about that little bit of quad definition in the pic of me in the shorts. So if that’s what’s making my calves bigger, I’m all for it. There is another pair of pants I got mail-order close-out no returns last year that I couldn’t wear then because they were too small on top. Now I think they’d fit up there, but I’m not sure because I can’t get them past my calves. Happy dance! (Although I was looking forward to them)

Thanks Rebekah! Even though it’s just the two of us in this socially distanced house, it isn’t boring with my teen around. I will have to put together some outfits with the khakis and see what people think.

Angie, good point about the angle of the pants pix. He was sitting on the floor and could barely be pressed into service pressing the shutter button. Actually standing up would’ve been way too much effort, lol. Glad to hear you like the pink skinnies. I got them before we moved here & wore them quite a bit that fall, now have some blazers I thought would go with them. The high temp here today was 21 c—you would’ve frozen in shorts, I bet, but we were comfy in ours.

Fit of both pairs of pants looks good, though the khaki ones look a bit worn, and the pink ones might be a tad see-through. I’m not a good judge of shorts, since I rarely wear them myself- pretty much only for bike-riding, gardening, and walks on the beach. I’d wear any of the ones in your picture for those activities. Shorts outfit is cute!

I like black&white printed shorts - more interesting than traditional khaki shorts and works great with red tee and sandals.
The pink pants/capri could work out with a longer tops (tunics or boyfriend styles let's say ).
The khaki pants fit is fine - the only question is if you like that classic style and what pieces you'll wear with it? High tops with some feminine blouse, or sandals/wedges and black tank top with scarf ?.. Fit lab would be helpful.
Kids are always opinionated about parents' fashion choices :) .

Everybody’s favorite fashion critic: my son.

I’ve been losing weight, so pulling out clothes for the season, I’m trying on shorts I haven’t worn for years. My son’s verdicts:
Like a pampered, wealthy thespian girl,
Mom shorts
Like an aborted tablecloth fetus
Like a field of raspberries threw up.

The pants are “like a female Tim Duncan” and “stop wearing Pink Panther clothes!” (The calves on the pink ones are tight enough I might not wear them anyway)

He deemed the shorts outfit acceptable.
