I tend to pack from current favorites if they are versatile and won't break my heart if they get ruined or lost. However I am always on the lookout for comfortable lightweight shoes to wear at home and for trips. I don't have a capsule that is only for trips.

And sometimes things that work out wonderfully become infused with the joy of the trip and hold special meaning! I love the clothes that seem to retain the smell of sunscreen from a midwinter getaway, or that were adventure travel workhorses. Wearing them reminds me of the special/good times.

I think there should be a little lightbulb above Angie's statement about always packing current favorites! I just returned from a wonderful trip to Northern CA with the realization that I had (unusually, for me) seriously overpacked. Now I understand why: When I took the same trip last year, I was very happy with my travel capsule, which consisted of navy, and cobalt basics with touches of coral and white--all comfortable and practical for the daily temperature changes and casual feel of wine country. This year, I inclined toward a paler palette of grays & creams represented by favorite recent purchases, but I kept thinking about last year's capsule and how well it had worked, so I added several of those pieces, too, resulting in a heavy, overstuffed bag, unworn clothes, and wardrobe confusion. I should have stuck with my dreamy grays and creams plus some pink or aquamarine; I would have had plenty to wear, less to lug, and the satisfaction of getting it right. Next time, I'll let my current favorites determine the colors and feel of my travel clothes.

...I probably would not take an item that currently makes or breaks a favorite outfit but is difficult to replace.

Such a good point! That clears everything up for me :)

I also liked your point about track pants. I'm going to try wearing mine a lot this spring and summer, and get all the love and wear I can out of them. Not sure what the trend is this coming fall/winter.

rachylou, great point--and relates to clothes, too. Many things don't actually last long enough to be worth an "investment". It's not just wearing out, it can be new technologies or change in lifestyle. I get the TravelSmith clothes thing, too. I think in those catalogues there are always a few things that might be ingenious but then there's a lot of polyester disasters. It's both the fabrication and the tendency to formless ("comfortable") fit. They also place a lot of emphasis on color-print coordination, which is one of the selling points, but I'm trying to do that with "real" clothes, using capsule approach. However I did buy the EB Travex pants which I would wear in mild weather walking-hiking here.

keturah, there's the rub, right? So I am trying to include some clothing pieces that are some of my true daily items because those I bought specifically for how they fit, length, fabrication, but I probably would not take an item that currently makes or breaks a favorite outfit but is difficult to replace. My AT sweaters are nice but basic and seem replaceable. I may find that they pill with hard wear and I will think of that as, pill now or later, what does it matter, good to know. My track pants I still like a lot but may have limited lifespan from now forward, would not buy exactly the same thing today, and I want to use them, can't wear them much in true summer which is just around the corner. They are a way to wear a tapered pant without investing in a trip-specific tapered pant.

I find the capsule idea helpful for travel but it isn't how I organize my clothes at home.

The real question for me, after reading your post and everyone's replies, what does a girl pack??! I have favorite clothes that I don't want ruined -- psychologically or textile-wise--from wearing nonstop. But I also hate feeling ugly when I travel.

I traveled all week for a number of years. So one day I thought, why not do a $300 bag? I mean, it's not gonna gather dust and will have bells and whistles. I learned why not: there's a certain level of hard travel where $300 acts just like $20, and spending $300 to replace at that rate is simply painful.

I also used to do travel clothes. The designated kind, which are fast dry synthetic and on the shapeless side. I felt horribly ugly in them and felt like I was waving the 'rob me, I'm a tourist flag!' I'm done forever with that too. Just give me tailored little discounted skirt suits from Ross, where the pieces can be split up and I feel much better.

Summer, thanks. It tends to reinforce not keeping things that don't fit/ flatter " just in case" because then you feel you have to use them instead of evaluating what to either do without or replace with something better. Meaning, something could be worth saving just for certain trips IF you still love and it just isn't used much because it's activity- specific ( gear, weather, sink- washable types of items).

I'm glad you have found the capsule strategy useful. I use capsules year-round in my everyday life, and they have revolutionised the way I dress and buy. I have to admit, though, that packing for a trip away always presents its own challenges: different activities have to be factored in and new purchases sometimes need to be made to accommodate them. At the very least, though, I know that I will be able to put together a group of clothes that are colour-cohesive and that work together easily- particularly helpful when packing for an emergency trip away.

Good luck with your trip and your capsule, and be sure to make notes for next time!

I also find travel is hard on things. I ended up tossing my favourite pair of jeans because I took them with me on a few extended trips (each was over a month). I wore them constantly and ignored the rest of my wardrobe. They were done. So sad.

I went on a 2 month trip this year and made notes. I realized I did not pack enough jeans (obviously) as well as a few other things. Like how could I manage for 2 months with 2 Yoga outfits when I do Yoga daily?

Yes, and I confess that I loathe taking my favorite items on the longer trips, because when I get back, I'm going to want to burn them because I've worn them too much. I felt that way after Iceland/London trip. I did not take such a drastic measure because surely after a rest I'll love these items again.

On the flip side I find I do reserve certain items for "travel only" precisely because they work so perfectly for that, and I don't want to grow bored of them, or ruin or wear them out, before my round of travels.

I bought a new jersey dress while in CA last week. I know it's going to be fab for traveling. It would also be great for wearing now and through the summer here at home. So on the fence!!!

Otherwise, shoes tend to make all the difference in what fits in a travel capsule and what does not. I have great dresses and pants that just don't work with my best traveling shoes, so they stay home, to avoid packing a suitcase half full of nothing but shoes...

Freckles, I think bags and such are so likely to be "trip bags" as you just have certain things you always carry and stash in them that may be different from everyday life. Or other features, such as waterproof.

How very true that some things that are perfect for a trip aren't in rotation at home. I have a cross body messenger bag from MEC that goes with me on all my trips as it has two secure closings and is made of a synthetic fabric. It is so much lighter than the heavy leather ones I use at home, somewhat smaller and just totally different. It is absolutely perfect for a trekking trip though.

To add to the confusion, I find that travel can be tough on things. I sometimes take an item or two that I don't plan to bring back to make room for buying something on the trip. To Ireland that article was a pair of grey pants that were gear but didn't look like it with a nicer top. I wore them to death but they had beef thrifted in the first place.
But I also took a pair of Eileen Fisher pants and jacket which probably cost me $150 on sale years ago, but have been worth many times that. They have been on every trip and long plane rides.

ElizabethP, I think that is a good insight about travel pieces not always being part of the regular wardrobe - I know it is true for me, though I don't always know why that is, and I'd like to move toward even more versatility.
I wonder if it is a style+ functionality thing. For travel I maximize functionality snd can also be more casual and sporty- gear.
The suggestions on my travel tote post brought this to mind- just as a possible example, what if there were a tote that WOULD work for both work/ everyday/ travel but it cost $ 300 -- would I buy that instead of have 3 totes ( former almost as my anyway, ha!).
Could I find a flat boot that I'd wear to work and could also wear for 12 hours of tourism walking? Don't know!

It is interesting how packing changes how you look at things. I find I have less that mixes and matches than I think. Or rather, the things that do mix and match don't work with what I'll be doing while I'm away. I also find that my favourite things to travel with aren't necessarily my favourite things to wear at home.

Angie, I get that! For me travel is mostly very casual( only occasional work- related and even that skews more casual) but I have noticed that " good casual" works well and is worth looking for. Also learning not to " save" items-- for example, will be taking a couple of work- merino sweaters as " use 'em or lose 'em or" basis.
Ingunn , yes. I don't have tight work capsules but it's a reminder of how useful is to have some core capsules with all the "parts" covered.

Many of you have posted lessons learned from packing/ travel. I find myself on that same road (!) and haven't even left home yet.
It really focuses you on what works and doesn't!
Color palette focus really helped me and still I'm not fully exploiting that. Still may buy what's on sale or available instead of what would really nail a look. Doing better though.
Also really shows what I like to wear and why- fits, flattery( my idea of it, anyway) and get epiphanies about what yo toss and why.
Then also see hos satisfying a really good capsule can be snd what truly expands it in a useful way, vs. Is just dross and clothing volume without value.
