I'm glad your trip was a good one!

I forgot the other thing... stuff a few of those purse-size kleenex packets into your pack. They don't take up much room, and I've never not needed tissues on a hike. :P

And Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies are possibly the most delicious trail food, ever. (I feel like Donkey, from "Shrek", typing that.)

Thank you all so much! I'm taking notes on all of this. We had a great time today in spite not having great equipment. It spurred us on to want good equipment and are planning on getting into back packing as well. Our Boy Scouts back packed in and are staying the night. It would be fun to be set up to stay with them sometimes.

My hiking is mostly done in the Rocky Mountains where the temperatures can go from freezing to super hot to a downpour within hours. My gear is much like Elly's. Long pants pants (not jeans because they soak up water like a sponge!), trail shoes (leather boots only if I'm carrying a heavy pack), mesh shoes for water crossings, wicking T (short-sleeve in summer, long-sleeve in spring/fall), long-sleeve technical shirt, brimmed hat, technical socks, water/wind repellent outer layer, and a light-weight fleece or wool zip pullover.

Even if I'm just going for the day, I always carry my Petzi headlamp because as LD says you just never know how long you might be out there and the night comes really fast in the mountains.

As for the rest, it really depends on where you are hiking. Obviously if you are only an hour or so away from civilization on a well-trod trail and within cell phone range, you don't need the same equipment as if you are in rugged terrain where you might have to spend the night before help can reach you.

I'm still old-fashioned enough to carry a water bottle clipped to my belt instead of a camel bak because it find it easier to use my water filter if I need to refill from a stream. I also carry bear spray (which, fortunately I've never had to use!). A compass has come in handy a few times if I've had to detour because of a slide or washout.

Oh, and consider investing in a collapsible hiking pole; after stubbornly using whatever was close at hand for years, my sons presented my husband and me with matching hiking poles. Super useful for uneven terrain and we've even used ours to rig a temporary rain shelter to wait out a summer storm. Very cosy, especially if you share your snacks!

I climbed Mt. Fuji 7 years ago... Camelpak (Camelback? The backpack that lets you bring along water) was worth every penny. So were the TImberland hiking boots and Thorlo socks. I still use all of this gear today, and it really lasts, and I have never gotten a blister. We spent our money on the shoes and the Camelpaks and just wore stuff we already had - comfy, stretchy athletic clothes mixed up with street clothes, in lots of layers, because it started out hot, and it snowed at the top.

Bring a flashlight. I cannot emphasize that enough. It doesn't matter if you think it's just a day hike. Always always always bring a flashlight, and always put fresh batteries in. I learned this lesson the hard way - three hours of stumbling in almost pitch-dark with a bunch of other girls, and only one cellphone-functioning-as-a-flashlight between the five of us. You never know if the sun is going to set on the wrong side of the mountain, (wrong = not the side you're climbing down), or if you're going to get delayed because of weather or blisters, or just because you had fun and lost track of time.

REI has some stuff on clearance right now. Frankly a camel bak is life saver for me, I drink far more water with that than just a regular bottle.
For hiking in the great Pacific Northwest my goretex boots are a Godsend. Even if it is not raining, there are often dribbly little streams and mud on the trails so I can go right through them with no problem.

Yes, hiking capsule is a great idea! I started one a few years ago, when I realized that I don't like hiking in old t-shirts and cotton pants or jeans (get wet and heavy pretty fast if there is water on the trail). Having a hiking capsule just makes it very easy to pack for a quick trip or get dressed for a day of hiking.

For the hiking boots, I would check reviews to make sure they have good traction when it is wet. Like Elly, I don't hike in shorts (but it would depend on your weather and terrain, of course). I also like long-sleeved shirts, as mentioned above.

Some of my favorites are Ex Officio pants (quick drying), like Nio Amphi pants for warm weather; Columbia shirts (I have a couple of their shirts with UPF and Insect Blocker), Outdoor Research UPF hats (I mostly use them for gardening but they would work for hiking too). I got most of my hiking stuff on sale from Sierra Trading Post and Amazon; I think 6pm also has some.

My theory on hiking gear is this . . . it needs to function for you, protect you, and function for the hikes you do.

I live in CO and hike mostly in CO and the greater southwest. I pretty much never wear shorts on a hike. I will only wear them on groomed trails in the heat where I am not going to have branches slapping me in the legs or deal with mosquitoes and ticks (i.e. hiking on maintained trails in the desert, canyon country, ect). For me, long pants in various weights and tough fabrics are gonna protect me from getting cut up when I fall, clamber over rocks, or walk through brush. They also better protect from insects. I wear tall boots because I like to be able to do minor river crossings in my waterproof (gortex) boots and because the tall boots keep insects and stuff out of my socks and legs. They also protect my feet from rocky terrain. I have strong ankles and rarely hike with a heavy pack, so the ankle support isn't important to me. I personally don't like most zip-off pants since they often don't fit over a pair of boots, so you have to take the boots off and by the time your done with all that you could have just rolled them up if your worried about water. Boots with a too-stiff shank (used for heavy hiking and true packing) will cause cramping or muscle strain for some people.

I'm a huge fan of long sleeves for the same reasons . . . lightweight breathable tech shirts with long sleeves protect from bugs and sunburns and abrasions with minimal chemicals.

I always wear a hat, either a ball cap, something with a wide brim, or a beanie. I often will wear a wicking headband or wrap under my hat. Protecting from sun is a big reason for me, but may not be as important in WA.

Instead of Tevas, I preffer a closed mesh river shoe for river crossings (to avoid slicing feet up) and something with more support and protection (trail runners, sandals like keens) for hiking in hot weather.

I also find a rain jacket or water-repellent wind repellent layer important, and a fleece or wool layer.

Honestly I think it depends on who you hike with, where you hike, and how long/hard of hikes you are going on. I regularly do an 8-miler and a 10-miler with minimal water crossings in my jeans and trail running shoes. YMMV

Betti's right. Also, goretex or other wet-proof shoes are a bonus, and ones with good traction.

Anna is a big hiker and might have good advice on this.

I like to bring a small pack to hold stuff (including camera) and water, obviously.

Layers are great, wicking fabric is great.

And you are so right. It can make so much good sense to put together a working gear capsule for the activities we regularly perform.

When you try on hiking boots, put your feet on an incline, pointing down. Then put your weight into them or jump a little. Make sure there's good toe room for when you're going down hill.

You'll need good socks that cushion your feet and wick away moisture. If you're hiking through grass you can get anti-seed socks.
Sounds like a fun capsule to put together.

I have everything on your list. :)

The only items I'd add to your list are a supportive sports bra, a hat, and a long sleeved technical shirt. I prefer long sleeves because I have the option of rolling them up/down.

If you get a baseball cap and you wear your hair in a ponytail, make sure the closure at the back is *not* velcro.

Also my fleece is part of a set. The fleece zips into a breathable waterproof hooded shell. I can wear the shell or fleece individually or both together. Both the fleece and the shell have armpit zips.

.... since I'm going on a decent hike tomorrow and realize that I'm completely unprepared. I suddenly wish I had:

*camel pack
*hiking boots
*Teva-type sandals
*lightweight fleece jacket
*lightweight pants that zip into shorts

I know, I know... nothing fashionable about that list but it's functional gear. And for a gearish occasion.... well, I'm thinking the hike would go better with decent equipment. It will still be a good day anyway but I think if we make a habit out of this, I'm going to need to do some shopping.

Any tips on hiking gear?
