I'm not sure I have specific summer dressing strategies to add. However, I think sometimes at the end of a season, even if I'm feeling bored or dissatisfied with my wardrobe and just want to throw it all out and start over, it is actually best to just sit tight, focus on other things in life that make me feel positive for a bit, and see how I feel after a few weeks (& hope for a weather change)!
Although admittedly I have never lived in Texas!

I live in super hot weather. Our summer arrived in Feb this year and we still haven't pulled out winter wear...so you get the idea.

Here is how I managed to dress for our long summer in 2016:

1) Your shorts MUST fit well.
2) Tees make practical sense, which is why I wear knits all through summers. Try patterned tees, or 'pretty' tees, as someone christened them here on YLF. A nice floral/abstract/geometric print on a simple knit tshirt makes a big difference.
3)Since boho is so on-trend, flowy woven tops & tunics are another great pick.
4) I love dresses for summer. Shift dresses and tshirt dresses are my fav. You CAN find options that flatter the figure while still being comfy. I wear cycling shorts underneath to always stay confident in my short dresses.
5) Don't throw away your oversized/baggy tshirts just yet. You'd be surprised at how awesome they look with a knit skirt. A knit mini (or tube skirt) is stretchy & comfy & like a tshirt for your bottom....but awesome on almost all types of bodies. You can pick them up real cheap at H&M as well as Zara. Below are two examples.
6) On days I really wanted to wear some kinda pants, I loved wearing silky jogger pants. I picked mine from H&M. I also got some cropped pants like Jaileen. I love them with crop tops.

You have put your finger on why hot weather dressing is so difficult. I am not a fan of knits and lack of structure on myself and have been happy with woven tees in silk ( examples in finds below from my closet) and sleeveless linen buttondowns. I like heavy fabrics that do not need an under layer for modesty for shift dresses that can be straight and not belted. The heavy fabric ( like denim) seems to add structure ( see finds below for examples). I'll be watching this thread for more ideas.

I was thinking the same thing as DonnaF, perhaps add some woven dresses that fit loosely enough to feel cool. I like her shirt-style picks, and I would keep an eye out for shift dresses in linen or cotton, too.

One of my go-tos in summer is a sleeveless fit n flare dress in a thicker knit like scuba, which skims over lumps and creates great structure. Scuba may sound counterintuitive in summer but actually it is light and airy because of the air circulation. And then you can just add an airy topper like a chiffon shirt or a silk kimono, and the outfit is complete. Tested in our hot and humid summers and I run hot by nature. Also, no ironing!

How about non-belted shirt dresses? Basically, button front shirts and popovers but longer? Collarless for the hotter days and collared for when you can stand something on your neck. Air will circulate around your legs and when it gets cooler you can wear crops, tights, or leggings underneath. I have the olive version of the blue striped linen dress that Angie has (below) so it is cool but fall-like.

I like wrap tops for summer. The wrap makes them feel dressier than a tee. I am small busted (I think you are too?) so I prefer the ones that wrap quite high up near the neck. Like the one in this photo from last year. Disregarding the pattern (which may not be to your taste), I think the wrap effect gives the top some structure. This one is semi fitted but I have some more fluid ones too. I don't find them hot.

This is my exact issue. Always hot, and hard to feel "put together". I have only a couple wovens, though I would like more. They are a much harder fit through the shoulder and bust, and one needs to be careful of how hot they are. And then finding a skimming knit that is neither too thin nor too boxy is also tough.

Sorry, not answers, but I will be following closely as you are not alone.

I find that tees and tops with a shoulder seam that sits right at my shoulder (not a more dropped seam or dolman type sleeve) helps me feel a bit more structured/tailored, even if it's just a tee.

@JAileen has some great outfits that lend themselves to structure but not super close fitting.

the striped tee for example, could be made with a crisp knit cotton with a slightly oversized fit (just slightly so it floats on the body but does not collapse into lagenlook layer).

Madewell Couriers and J Crew Popovers were my first thought. Also, there are a fair number of t-shirt shaped tops made out of woven linen in all sorts of sleeve lengths (I'm not a fan of linen jersey knits, but I'm ready to build my entire summer wardrobe out of high-quality linen). I like Not Perfect Linen and Knock Knock Linen on Etsy, and Conscious Clothing for a US-made option:

Sterling, last summer I relied heavily on graphic tees. But I got SO tired of them. I'm going to try and come to terms with simply wearing my button downs more often (the short sleeved in warmer temps). And just keep my eye out for some tees with at least a more structured shoulder and top line.

Suz, yes, you are right about needing to change more often in the heat. I guess I need to figure out the tops I already own that feel structured to me and why. So far, it is the button downs or popover styles (again due to the collar, rolled sleeves and also, a pocket or a bit of pattern). Probably also the shoulder line. Today I reached for a simple navy/white plaid popover, sleeves rolled jenna style over dark denim skinny jeans and it feels great. But today will only be in the mid 70's, which makes it easier for this combo to work.

I did add a couple of short sleeve button downs for my summer wardrobe and those are worn frequently too. The plaid one is not as sloppy on me as it is on the model in the Finds. The navy is all eyelet so I wear a navy cami-lette (my word) under it. I love that one especially as I get a little breeze though it all day. The white one I haven't worn yet (just got it recently) but I like crisp white on warm days.

I have plenty of tops, but I need to get with the program of styling them and figuring out which ones feel right to me vs. which ones feel sloppy.

You can have the best of both worlds to some extent if you confine the tees to "at home" wear and then go to wovens for when you are out and about. I need to change a couple of times on sticky summer days anyway (no AC) and so this is one of my solutions. Of course my summer isn't as long as yours. (That would be my winter, sigh...)

I think we often get that feeling seeing candid pictures of ourselves at the end of a seemingly never-ending season. We just get so tired of what we own. But it could also be that you are gearing up to change silhouettes a bit. The difficulty will be that a more tailored look makes it tough to stay cool. I think it will be a question of finding items that glide without clinging. Not easy.

I hear you about the oversized tops! I got rid of a few this summer for the exact same reasons you mention. Even though I happily wore them a year or two ago, they just seemed baggy and shapeless and sloppy, so out they went. Even a really nice Eileen Fisher tank just felt too big, despite my weight gain.

I also filled a big bag for donation at the ranch. My ranch closet has been acting as a holding zone, but I've discovered that there are some things that feel so un-fab, I won't even wear them around the cows.

Jaileen - 13 Months of Sunshine (that's a song title about Jamaica I believe, but it relates to Texas as well). You have some great outfits for summer there, thank you for sharing. And I'm going to make a point to add a few more shorts to my wardrobe when the spring/summer merchandise starts rolling in. I think I just need to figure out what helps me feel structured on top and give up a little of the comfort of knits and tees every day.

Janet, thanks for your commiseration. Yes, we are expecting slightly cooler weather - which will be great. Speaking of jeans, I've been having a really hard time finding a new pair recently. I just want something that's not so stretchy. A nice, slim fit, dark wash that keeps their shape. Seems that is next to impossible for some reason. Most things are cropped right now and that's not doing it for me. I have plenty of faded or slightly faded versions but really want that dark wash pair for going out. I do wear my boyfriend faded AE jeans when working outdoors and they are 99% cotton so they feel pretty good even when it's quite warm.

And the extra few lbs. that has crept up certainly doesn't help me either. I'm not having trouble fitting into things, but I just don't feel as fit as I'd like. And many of my clothes I think are just a bit loose because I hate that tight feeling, but the trade off seems to feel sloppy suddenly. At least the hot flashes are better (Black Cohosh does work for me, though there are some trade offs).

I did get back to working out yesterday so that always helps of course.

I sympathize. I lived in Texas for ten years and the summer felt endless.

In the spring this year I bought several pairs of new shorts and crops. It made all the difference for me. I felt like I had a whole world of options available to make presentable outfits. It was especially important since I ended up going down to see my mother a half dozen times in the hospital and rehab after her terrible fall in June. It was one less thing for me to think about, and I felt like I looked decent in summer clothes, for once.

I'm afraid I'm not much help, but I'm back in TX now (just as it was getting blissfully cool in MD) and am awaiting the cooler temps coming next week. So commiserating with you. And on the ranch, there is no way I'm wearing shorts. I keep old jeans here, but they're all either skinnies or old enough that they're a little tight now, so I've been hating the feeling of jeans sticking to my legs. I may need to buy some cheap, loose jeans to leave here! That and get serious about losing these extra lbs.

So I haven't been feeling fashion much lately. It's still mostly hot in Texas with only a hint at fall so far. Many days it still feels too warm for jeans or pants. I've been trying to figure out what to do to get back in the fashion groove, but my closet sits there with plenty of perfectly good clothes and I reach for the same few things.

One thing I think I'm missing in hot weather dressing is structure. I'm tired of everything being loose and "cool" to wear as a prerequisite. I feel like the only items on top that feel slightly structured are button downs - due to the collar and ability to roll the sleeves I suppose. But I can't wear button downs every day. Or maybe I can, but I'm not for whatever reason. Many of my tees and knits are feeling sloppy to me. I saw a candid photo recently of myself and cringed in fact. A favorite color tee looked terrible. Probably a size too big and much too thin of a fabric. Maybe it was my bad posture and messy hair after hiking that added to that feeling of yuck.

We've talked about adding structure to hot weather outfits before, but I can't seem to find the posts right now. I guess I should have added some better shorts over the summer - people are likely tired of seeing me in my denim rolled versions. I do wear belts and semi tuck. I try to add jewelry and good shoes. I think it's the tops themselves giving me the most trouble. Maybe I'm just over the whole slouchy thing.

Sitting up straight in my chair and sticking to ordering some new makeup for now.

Anyone want to share or re-share some tips on hot weather structure?
