I am an in the closet CC fan! The majority of belts that I own came from CC, as well as a good amount of jewelry. The physical store definitely gave off a "Schoolteacher Chic" vibe, but the online selection always had a different feel about it. The dresses were especially nice online.

I think if they do reopen online, it won't just be the older age set shopping there, they had some really decent clothing, I just think they just got edged out of the market by Chicos and Talbots by not being AS fashion forward as the other two.

I think CC should go with both online and catalog shopping; just ditch the stores. That should satisfy most people.

The older folks who come into my office don't have internet and don't care to use it. That's not stereotyping, I don't think. It's just the way it is in my neck of the woods.

Also, there are older people like my sisters who know a little about the internet but for whatever reason don't shop for clothing online.

Can we stop stereotyping the 65+ person as being a computer/Internet illiterate? Up until a year ago, I was TEACHING twenty somethings about web design, online commerce, and application development. Most of my 65-75 peers are quite comfortable using their iPads and smart phones to book flights, bank online, order clothes and symphony tickets, and FaceTime/Skype with family and friends. Many have their own blogs.

I get that some seniors may not be comfortable with online ordering, but that group is dwindling. If CC is planning to target the 45-75 age group, choosing the online option might not be such a bad move.

I, too, heard it was Talbot's that was trying for the CC reboot. Several associates from the CC store here in my town now work at the Talbot's at the same mall. Another friend told me she got some sort of notification from CC asking if she wanted to transfer her points to Talbot's. So that seems mysterious.

rachylou, my laptop screen went vertical on me after I accidentally hit a key I shouldn't have hit (or so our IT person told me). The solution is to hit Ctrl + Alt + the up arrow key. That pops it back to normal.

No. I'll look forward to it, then.

My mom is in her 70s and also won't buy online, but will catalog shop. She feels online is not as safe. IMO that's debatable. Your number is still going into a computer AND you're telling it to someone who probably has a lot to gripe about...

On the other hand, my mother does mad things to computers. She's the only person I know who's had her screen rotate to vertical on her...

Thanks for all the info, ladies. I would go in their stores and like the clothes in theory, but only ever bought 2 items, and that at the outlet store. Their clothes in the regular stores seemed to be for women in early retirement buying for a cruise. They were just not quite for me. I do like J. Jill, so I'll probably check them out online just to see.

Are you saying j Jill is the one that bought the name/rights, cjh? They're pretty coy about it on the website, but if that is the case that would be a logical matchup. I can see that working really well - j Jill has the boho, Eileen fisher side of things, and CC is a bit more tailored, a tiny bit more traditional.

That's interesting to hear, retail girl - I hope they make a go of it. When I was heavier, I found a lot of basics at CC and Chico's both - they fit well on my plus size apple shape, which makes sense if they design for a post/menopausal figure which tends to be more rectangular. I wasn't a fan of the overly done, embroidered or blingy options, but the basic jeans, button front shirts, etc., from CC proved to be solidly made and good value.

In my experience, people my parents' age (late 60s, early 70s) are usually pretty comfortable with the Internet, computers and phones, because they had to use them for work before they retired. It's the generation above that - e.g. My DH's 80-something grandmother - who's not really computer literate. But to be frank, that demographic is shrinking pretty rapidly and I don't know how much of an economic force they are anymore. I suspect that the key to CC's long term success will be reaching out to the younger half of the baby boomers and the older Gen Xers and getting them to buy as well.

My mom was a huge fan of CC. I liked CC items in theory, but they never fit me right. I'm not super tiny, but nothing there was small enough for me. Maybe they can remedy that as part of their re-engineering.

Wouldn't it be great if clothing sizes could be standardized the way shoe sizes are? It would make online and catalog shopping so much more fun.

I'm 72 and I shop online a lot--and have for years. Many of my friends do as well.

I've gone into CC stores and looked, and used to look at the catalog that came to the house, but don't remember ever buying anything there. It just isn't my style--colors, cut, fabric and fashions don't appeal to me and always seemed to be for someone much older than me.

I have a friend my age who is a completely different shape and size and we don't wear the same type of clothes, but she doesn't care for CC either.

The woman who is going to head up this reincarnation is someone I worked with years ago at a major department store. She has experience with catalog/ Internet businesses and also with the over 65 demographic. She is very savvy and has a great track record. I would say it will be a success based on her involvement alone.

I have two older sisters who are in that 70-something age group, and I don't believe either one of them shop online to amount to anything. One of them mentioned to me the other day that she has trouble remembering her passwords. That same sister created a LinkedIn account, but has yet to post any information about herself (resume or brief bio sketch, for example). I have this feeling she hasn't figured out how to do it.

They buy from Amazon, I believe, but when it comes to clothing they to go a brick-and-mortar store where they can try things on. I can't do that because I'm petite and have a much easier time finding what I need online. They also like strictly classic clothing, while I like to mix in some trendy pieces. I guess the age gap between us (I'm 50-something) really shows in our clothing choices.

My SIL is in her mid 70's and capable of ordering online but is too paranoid about putting a credit card number out there in cyberspace. She and their friends of that generation. If she really wants something online she has someone else order it for her. I think that she would also rather try things on.

My mom loved Coldwater Creek but at 84, does not own a computer. But she buys lots if items from catalogs via the 800 number. Be careful about characterizing a 60 year old as beyond the ability to learn or adopt to this "new fangled internet." I'm 59 and I have been using a computer and ordering items on line for years. I was kind of an early adopter of online shopping in the early 1990s, doing it when others were worried about security, etc. CC will be successful if they can find the right product mix to appeal to their core clientele. Brands that lose sight of who their customers are and what they want will and do die off. The CC woman does tend to be slightly older (from my observation, 45 plus but not all women in that group liked the brand), have a more conservative style (like wants her arms and legs more covered), enjoys shopping, often is working in a professional position, has money to spend but not at the higher designer or even bridge line pricepoint. They liked CC's generous but consistent fit and that the line carried up to 3x and displayed it mixed with missy sizes, not ostracized to the back of the store. CC was not quite my zeitgeist, but lots of my friends were saddened to see this retailer leave the market and are struggling to find a reliable "go to" option.

Are they going to keep their name? I have a few CC items in my closet, but I'm an online shopper and buy from several different retailers. I imagine, as others have pointed out, that the older CC shoppers won't want to shop online. My feeling is that this is the way things are going and that older shoppers are going to have to learn how to use the internet.

My mom will also be happy to hear this news. She herself won't be put off by this development - she mastered the iPhone at age 60-something and is almost as tech-savvy as I am, but I agree with Joy that this strategy is risky given their target demographic. Based on Mom's observations before their B&M stores closed, they may also have to work to get their merchandise back up to a level their old customer base would appreciate. I wish them well, though. They're to be commended for putting up a fight at the very least.
Your reply

An interesting point, Joy - I wonder if catalog will involve having an 800 number where orders can be called in, if someone is not so facile with the Internet. My mom is quite good at Internet bargain searching, but then again she'd probably learn how to use a neural implant if it helped save her money. :)

Looking at the website, they say that they're planning to launch in November online, with a catalog at some point after that.

I suspect that many of their older customers are not used to using the Internet, especially for shopping. I wonder if this will work out. My SIL was a big Coldwater Creek fan but NEVER will order anything on-line.

DonnaF's post about Eloquii reminds me that my mom, a big Coldwater Creek fan, told me the other day that someone's bought the brand and is rebooting it, and going to catalog/Internet only. I suspect that without the cost of the stores and employees, they should be able to make a go of it, and remain a successful niche retailer (ala Northstyle and others).
