A lining helps the straining of the fashion fabric a bit. In some cases, it seems to stabelize the structure some but I can sew and it beats me how. Not talking interlining, which is a second fabric sewn as one with the fashion fabric.

I took out a polyester lining underneath a full silk dress falling from a yoke and was much the happier for it.

If it's a straight dress, it might be better to replace with a full or half slip, like the taffeta ones that are/were made to keep knits from seating out. This would be more for cooler weather.

Would you wear it with the lining? I have taken the lining out of pants (granted, this was years ago) to make them more comfortable. It let me wear them for a while longer where I would have otherwise donated them.

I have ripped out linings that were wonky (pants) and was happy. Think of it this way - would you get rid of the dress if you don't like the lining? Is the lining making you not wear it? Maybe you have nothing to lose.

Very rarely a delicate or bias-cut fabric depends on support from the underlayer. But that would be fairly obvious from the get-go.

I did it to a skirt once and regretted it. I was uncomfortable and clung to my body.

I have done this in the past and it hasn't been horrible. Is there any reason I shouldn't do it?
